  1. Gwatney has been confirmed dead by local media.

    RIP.

Sad to say, but let's hope it was a personal thing between him & the gunman. If it's another nut that got amped up by right-wing hate mongers like the dude who shot up the gay-friendly church a few weeks ago, we're all going to be due for a little soul-searching about how far we take our passionate political rhetoric.

  2. Michigan is a weird state this year because, though Democrats are generally up everywhere and Republicans are generally down, Michigan has its own weird dynamic where an ineffective Democratic governor has presided over a prolonged period of economic failure. It's not really Granholm's fault, but she also has done very little to help the situation. Local Democrats may struggle, but I think the people of Michigan still recognize that within the federal government, the Republicans have been too corrupt and incompetent to vote for. Local Dems may have big problems in Michigan but Bush is also unpopular and McCain's ties to Bush are probably too strong. I think Michigan will still go for Obama. Kwame is a total disaster but I don't think that will reflect on Obama -- once Kwame is gone, the new Mayor will be a Dem, as will whoever follows him, and whoever follows him. Detroit isn't going to swing Red no matter what happens.

Don't underestimate the damage Kwame has done to the MI Democratic party. I agree that Detroit itself will never turn red, but the scandal does nothing but reinforce the image that many (in fact, the majority) of suburbanites and rural people of MI have of the democrats (corrupt, ineffective, immoral, etc.). Whereas nationally, the vast group of independents/undecided voters are either split 50-50 or leaning in Obama's favor, I think we're going to see most of those votes in MI going to McCain.

Whether that's enough to flip MI red, we'll have to see... luckily for the democrats, the state's population is distributed such that it makes it an uphill battle.

  3. I can nto think of a single major acccomplishment for McCain in the past quarter century.

Now that's not really fair. McCain has had many accomplishments over the years... only problem is he no longer believes in them. The McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Act & the McCain-Kennedy Immigration Reform Act to name a couple...

  4. I think they already are.

    Because of this?

If anything, it gives Democrats the opportunity to bring up McCain's past infidelity. If Edwards is such a bad SOB because of what he did, what does that make McCain? At least Obama has been faithful to his wife (as far as we know) - so for anyone whose vote would be affected by this type of thing, I think it goes to Obama's favor.

  5. Oh yeah, this would have been a huge problem if he'd gotten the nomination. But he didn't, so its irrelevent now.

Well, that part of it is still relevant to me & my opinion of him in that it shows both incredible hubris as well as selfishness on his part. I lost a ton of respect for the man - not just for the affiar, but for the audacity to lie about it all this time and risk giving the election away as a result of it.

  6. I dunno, Bobs, I kinda agree with FHF here. The whole "fake birth certificate" thing seems to be along the lines of the keep saying it and some people will start to think it's true and/or not remember if it's true.

yep, keep throwing shit like this out there and some people will believe it. we can laugh about the absurdity of it all we want, but the sad reality is that it works.

  7. I guess there won't be an Attorney General Edwards, after all.

Big disappointment - I was hoping for an Obama/Edwards ticket at one point. Good thing that never happened.

For the life of me - as someone who's been married for over 13 yrs - I simply do not understand the logic of affairs. If your marriage isn't fulfilling, get a divorce. I know it gets more complicated when there are kids involved - but that's all the more reason to do it the right way.

  8. Calm down, everybody. Keep this a more civilized discussion please. It's regressing to name-calling and personal attacks, and that won't fly.

well, it IS a thread about the presidential elections, after all. seems quite appropriate given how the campaigns have turned.

ugh... it's only august - only going to get worse from here on out.

  9. Looks like Paul has given us the missing 5:05 from the last release: http://studio.tunecore.com/store/product/47

After the ridiculously cheap 49:00, I was happy to be able to pay $5.05 for this.

hilarious. I also pitched in the extra couple of bucks... why not? seems like it might be going to his legal defense fund anyway.

This definitely feels like a reaction to something that must have happened regarding the 49:00 release. I guess some copyright holders took issue with the song medley. This would account for its being pulled from Amazon.

yeah, it's now apparent that's what happened. wonder who did the bitching/threatening?

Here's the lyrics as best I can make out:

    [voice over]

That was the voice of Adolf Hitler, the most ferocious dictator the world has ever known. For 13 years he led a reign of terror. During that period, his public appearances created a state of mass hypnosis among his many followers. His speech over, the crowds would shout, "Zeig Heil! Zeig Heil!"

    ...

the little Hitler speech and the ensuing "analysis" sounds like it's from an episode of South Park. Wonder if Paul got permission from Trey & Matt... :lol

anyway, cool little track & funny story... I could get used to this... :dancing

  10. totally missed this and now it seems i can't DL from amazon...sounds like it's pretty sweet too. thoughts?

Yeah, you wonder what happened. It's been Amazon's #1 album download since it came out, and it's not like they ran out of supply or anything... did amazon cave to industry pressure about releasing a full-length album for 49 cents, or did Westerberg plan for this to be a 'limited time offer' kind of deal?

  11. And I really really love the new song about his dad, it's so raw and painful it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

    Goodnight Sweet Prince

agree... the lyrics to that song are painfully honest. It's probably the only song that really suffers from the "ADD" format, since the last third of it (the most emotional part) is only played in the right channel with another song in the left.

    Goodnight Sweet Prince

    ----------------------------

    When the morphine kicked in

We watched our drowning man fight

I took two hits myself and

Held his hand as he died

    Just between him there

I leaned and I whispered to his ear

    Goodnight sweet prince

If you are at all still there

    I whipped out my harp

and blew the old man some Taps

    They said don

  12. I saw a similar thing a few yrs ago (ok, maybe it was 10+) about how a near-majority of Californians expressed a willingness to split from the US.

Considering the fact that CA would still be the world's 7th largest economy on its own, with an abundance of natural resources, it's not too far-fetched of an idea, at least as far as far-fetched ideas go...

  13. i'm just saying for me personally, i'm not going to listen to this all that often due to the ADD-ish nature of the release, which is unfortunately considering there's some truly great melodies and lyrics throughout (quite a bit better than Folker imo), but it's hard for me to listen to and enjoy the songs to their fullest as a result of how it's put together. that's awesome if you're able to enjoy or ignore that aspect of it, i just can't, i've tried but my brain doesn't really work that way.

Funny, I find myself enjoying this album much more than his other recent albums precisely because of the "ADD-ish nature" of it. It's a fresh and new approach, and it's very soothing for me in a weird way to just click on play and go along for the ride. I guess I've given up on the notion that Westerberg will soon return to a proper recording with backing musicians, producers and engineers. His music these days is what comes out of his basement - and 49:00 feels like the most honest and true representation of this creative phase of his career/life.

  14. So my download is only 43:55. Am I taking 49 minutes of music too literally?

As was mentioned on the Westerberg board, the "missing" 5:05 is probably actually there - but in the form of songs being played simultaneously with others!

Definitely Westerberg's most experimental album to date. A couple of wonderful gems in those 43:55.

Sounds much more like Folker than Mono to me, but then again, I think Mono was almost perfect. This isn't even close to perfect (nor does it try to be), but it's really fun to listen to.

and all for less than a cup of coffee? Well worth it.

  15. the truth always lies somewhere in the middle.
I think we have gotten to a point where the most blatant of lies will be floated because people know that, if repeated enough, it will become reality. Perception is reality.
That's the definition of propaganda: "If you say something enough times..."

indeed. that's the attitude they're trying to exploit. Make enough ridiculous claims about someone and enough people will start to think "well, at least some of it must be true."

  16. I find it pretty amusing that Hillary might be disqualified as a VP candidate because of the vetting process that Obama's team is putting her & Bill through.

So Bill's recent business dealings were perfectly fine when he was the spouse of the presidential candidate, but they're now an issue that might prevent him from being the spouse of the vice-presidential candidate? :lol
