  1. hey,

I know that dime has shared two different torrents of Wilco's last ACL show, but I was wondering if anyone had the capability to capture just the audio and share? I know this happened with Wilco's 2004 show, but wasn't sure if there was anyone who had the abilities to do so and if anyone else was interested in getting their hands on it.

if not, no worries ... just would love it if anyone has it.

  2. I've done the Wilco only mix before, but some of Billy's songs (especially on the first Mermaid Avenue) are so beautiful that those mixes have sounded incomplete. Personally, I love the following Billy songs:

    Walt Whitman's Niece

Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key

    Ingrid Bergman

    The Unwelcomed Guest

Also, Birds & Ships is absolutely essential for me to get the complete "Mermaid Avenue" experience, so there you go.

When I did do the Wilco only mix, it was tracked in the following order:

    1. Airline to Heaven

    2. California Stars

    3. Feed the Man

    4. When The Roses Bloom Again

    5. Hoodoo Voodoo

    6. At My Window Sad and Lonely

    7. Remember the Mountain Bed

    8. Christ For President

    9. One By One

    10. Blood of the Lamb

    11. Another Man's Done Gone

    12. Someday Some Morning Sometime

  3. I'm gonna try to capture it just in case. They haven't put up every webcast in the roadcase. For example, the 5-20 webcast from London was never posted, and that had "Be Not So Fearful" with Bill Fay. I'm glad i decided to capture that one, although there are technical problems, which is why they may have decided not to post that one.

I've set my alarm for 5:30 tomorrow morning. :yes

any chance of sharing your 5-20 webcast?

  4. I always try to have exactly two albums by an artist or group. That way, if you really get into that artist, you can follow-up with a second CD. However, after two albums, I try to switch gears not only with artists or bands but also with musical style or genre. I also lean on Greatest Hits and compilations for road trips. With that in mind, I had roughly 20+ hours of work related travel this past fall and here is a list of albums I find myself constantly listening to while on the road:

Wilco: My most recent live stuff at the time.

Josh Ritter: The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter & Animal Years

Van Morrison: Moondance & It's Too Late to Stop Now

Bob Dylan: Anything (usually live Bootleg Series stuff)

    Neil Young: Anything, pick two

Comedy albums - Steven Wright or Lewis Black

Any type of This American Life CD or podcast

Johnny Cash: Normally Folsem & San Quentin

Beatles: Number One Hits & Abbey Road

Beach Boys: Usually Their Greatest Hits

The Band: Rock of Ages & The Band

80's Great Hits Compilation: Usually 2 CD Mix

    Eddie From Ohio: Fun stuff

Guster: Ganging Up On The Sun & Keep it Together

    Joy Division: Permanent

    Michael Jackson: Thriller & Bad

    The National: Boxer & Alligator

Paul Simon: There Goes Rhymin' Simon & Graceland, & Concert in Central Park

R.E.M. Out of Time & Lifes Rich Pageant

Radiohead: The Bends & OK Computer

Rod Stewart & The Faces: Greatest Hits Compilation

Them: The Story of Them Greatest Hits Compilation

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Greatest Hits & Wildflowers

  5. but why he is taking the opportunity now to address this. why didn't he address it head on years ago when he heard the "controversial" sermons? why not at the beginning of his campaign? where is the effort prior to this speech to bring forward this dialogue with the minister himself and make someone obama is so close to aware of how much his actions are prohibiting the unity you talk mention? action, that's what i need, not simply a speech that talks about it.

i have a hard time with the whole respecting someone that differs so extremely on such a fundamental core point of view. there are some things, indeed, yes we can all agree to disagree about, that is reality. however, rev wright is not obama's best friend or third cousin, this is his pastor, his spiritual advisor, and yet they don't agree on the message that rev wright preaches. i find flaw in that. the we don't agree contradicts the notion of the role that wright has played in his life. in other words, i don't understand how his spiritual advisor, his pastor, his preacher, whatever term you give it does not align with his own personal beliefs.

I appreciate you stating what you need out of this issue - it just may be different than what other people need. I can cite both family and spiritual leaders and/or advisors that I extremely differ with on what you may label "fundamental core point of view". I think you may be mistaken to believe that what has been cycled in the media is what the Rev. Wright preaches. In fact, if he has been a pastor for 30+ years, I suspect he has preached on hundreds if not close to thousands of different topics, both theological and political. It is not as though Rev. Wright preaches this same topic or uses the same inflammatory language every Sunday week in and week out. I, of course, do not attend his church or have ever heard him speak in person, but I am filtering it through my own experiences in a religious upbringing.

Are you a person who regularly attends a religious service of worship? The only reason I ask is that as a regular churchgoer (for 15+ years), I have found that it is impossible to find a place of worship where many engaged and devoted members don't have strong, opposing views held by the pastoral staff or leadership. However, I have found such places with some level of disagreement or theological "tension" to be a healthy component of growth. It is what separates critical dialogue with indoctrination. It is what makes the greatest churches, or mosques, or synagogues - the freedom to engage in sermons or dialogues where one doe not hold the same position. Should we condemn all practicing Catholics every time they don't condemn something that the Pope or the Vatican issues a decree on which sounds ludicrous to us?

I really can't fathom the reasons why this has become such an issue, but it is an issue. For me, the most significant part of Obama's speech was when he admitted that he cannot condemn the Rev. Wright anymore than he could condemn his own grandmother, for reasons he then listed. Obama condemned the man's words but not the man entirely. To me, that is the mark of a noble person.

  6. you know your friend's musical tastes better than me, so I have no problem. I make different Wilco mixes for different friends, and they are always 2 CD mixes.

  7. Just when I thought I might accomplish something at work today - along comes this ...

Well, here is my gut reaction (because I really need to get to work):

    1. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

    2. Van Morrison - Moondance

    3. Paul Simon - There Goes Rhymin' Simon

    4. Neil Young - On The Beach

    5. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

    6. Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding

    7. Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue

    8. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

    9. R.E.M. - Automatic For The People

    9. The Band - The Band

    10. Nick Drake - Bryter Layter

    11. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home

    12. Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

    13. Radiohead - The Bends

    14. The Beatles - Abbey Road

    15. Michael Jackson - Thriller

    16. Nick Drake - Pink Moon

    17. Paul Simon - Graceland

    18. Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

    19. U2 - The Joshua Tree

    20. The Bee Gees - Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack

Just Missing the Cut (in alphabetical order)

Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde

Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks

Cat Stevens - Teaser And The Firecats

    Elliott Smith - Either/Or

James Taylor - Sweet Baby James

    Jeff Buckley - Grace

    Michael Jackson - Bad

Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

    R.E.M. - Out Of Time

    Radiohead - OK Computer

    Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

    Son Volt - Trace

    U2 - Achtung Baby

    Whiskeytown - Stranger's Almanac

    Wilco - Summerteeth

A few that are too new to be considered, but have been in heavy rotation since I got them:

Josh Ritter - The Animal Years

    The National - Boxer

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born

Finally, I didn't include concerts ... otherwise Bob's Bootleg Series would dominate the list.

  8. I now have 3 little girls of my own, so I could potentially get a lot of practice at doing this if I'm lucky enough to still be around for it. Regardless of what songs play, I expect to be a weepy mess.

I have two girls myself, and I'm trying to get a head start with their taste in music and potential song selection. I use to sing "My Darling" to my firstborn when she was still in her mommy's belly. Her current favorites are Apartment Story by the National (she calls it "Pin Your Flowers On"), Walken, and Hanna Montana's music. Hey, she is still 5 after all.

And you're right, I'm going to be a wreck should I be fortunate enough to experience my daughters getting married.

  9. We danced to Van Morrison's "Have I Told You Lately". Probably cliche, but tasteful nonetheless (and I love Van's music).

My wife danced with her father to Louise' "What A Wonderful World". He had 3 open heart surgeries prior to our wedding (the first when she was a teen), so his presence and participation was monumental to everyone, and their dance together was probably the highlight of the reception. He died about two years ago (seven years after our wedding).

If they have a strong and healthy relationship, I have found that the father/daughter dance is a much more meaningful and significant tradition than the first dance.

  10. I'm assuming that your cousin asked you if you'd marry them? Also, though you mentioned she is not religious, is she getting married in a church or a religious center for worship (temple, mosque, etc.) The reason I ask is that if it is at a religious center, you want to be sure that whatever ordination credentials you obtain will be recognized and accepted by them.

  11. I was at summerlong camp and there were several people with similar names (Jonathan, John, etc.) so we all agreed early on to come up with appropriate nicknames.

A couple of days later I was talking with a group of guys about television programs we watched as kids. I flippantly mentioned C.H.i.P.S being one of my favorite shows growing up. One guy immediately designated Ponch as my nickname. When I asked why that had to be my nickname, he responded, "Because C.H.i.P.S took place in Southern Cal. and you go to school in So. Cal. and Ponch was Hispanic and you're Asian and that's about as close as we're going to get." I'm not even sure Ponch on C.H.i.P.S was Hispanic or not, but it took only two hours before everyone called me Ponch.

An interesting sidenote is that I met my future wife that summer and she first met me as Ponch, so anyone I meet through her (her side of the family, co-workers, friends) calls me Ponch while my family, friends, and colleagues call me by my real name (Jonathan).

There is nothing more perplexing to people than meeting a Korean named Ponch.

  12. I appreciate those who have responded to my post, especially since they are of the opposite opinion of me. I really do appreciate their willingness to stick to their guns. I'm not really going to flood the board with back and forth simply because I too am sticking to my guns and just have a different perspective of it.

It just seems as though a lot of emotion and passion is invested in this argument and probably most people are already fixed in their opinion. I guess to each their own. I personally just don't get the big deal. That's all. I personally don't think it has anything to do with me being blind in my "devotion" to the band. I just don't think it's as big of a deal as others.

Hopefully others who disagree will concede that those who do not share their opinion aren't necessarily blind in their devotion as well. I think it's obvious I let my emotions get me as well, so I certainly cannot stand above the fray when I am stoking the fire myself.

Also, as someone who has not played SNL before, I certainly think Lorne Michaels was in the driver's seat and perhaps making concessions for the Residency was the one benefit they were going to get before moving on.

  14. ponch1028, you epitomize what I meant by 'kool-aid drinker' and 'VC jonestown'. The idea that any band, or anything for that matter, is above reproach and fair criticism, is frightening when extrapolated. 'What happened to this board'? Wow1!

Here is a quote from Greg Kot's 'Learning How To Die': "We're not U2," Tweedy says. "We're not the biggest rock band in the world. But we are part of the fabric of certain people's lives who have tickets and are waiting to see us. And there is no doubt in my mind that for some people out there, we are one of the threads they are hanging on to. And I think what we have to do as a band is to make those people aware of how we need them as much as they need us."

Does providing a little perspective amount to 'kool-aid drinker and VC jonestown?' What is the fair criticism here? I don't get that. They are a band, they are a business. You quote Kot's book. Does this one event really say to you that they are intentionally sticking it to you? Is that what you believe? Does every decision by the band have to be a gesture to you that they need YOU? Or is the problem that you need them more than they need you? I can understand people being disappointed. I am partially understand people being hurt. But a lot of things being posted here seems to be spurred by anger, which I don't understand. Tweedy's statement sounds nice and sincere and probably epitomizes some of the best qualities of the band, but c'mon, let's not put them on a pedestal just so we can knock them off when they don't live up to "our" standards that we've placed on them. I have no problem with criticism or fair criticism, but my own perspective is that the band has done so much and demonstrated such a level of generosity that those who do not take that into account are the ones who epitomize 'kool-aid drinkers' and 'vc jonestown' because in the grand scheme of things and perspective they are allowing one facet, their anger and disappointment, motivate them.

    If by
  15. The inability that some of you have to criticize, shows a lack of insight at best and is somewhat frightening at worst.

The inability that some of you have to get over it shows a lack of perspective at best and a neurotic and narcissistic tendency at worst. Some of you certainly view yourselves more highly than perhaps the band does, and I got to side with them. Get over yourselves. I don't get to go see Wilco this weekend. That sucks. I took time off of work, I made personal and professional arrangements to get away for a long weekend. I made reservations at a nice hotel in the middle of the historical district. The August date is actually a very hectic and busy time for me in terms of my job. You know what? I'm disappointed and inconvenienced and wish things were different. That's life, and it certainly is expected from family or friends (or a band) that you love. What good can possibly come from me pouting and whining? Nothing is going to change, and whether you agree or not, they choose SNL over Charleston. By the way, Charleston was also one of the last shows to sellout, when all the others seemed to sellout the first day they went on sale, so I have absolutely no problem if they didn't postpone the Residency shows but did with the Charleston shows. Chicago is their hometown, where their families are, and where a large portion of their fanbase is that has supported them through many of their charitable auctions and concerts. Why would anyone suggest that Charleston should be on the same level as Chicago.

If anything, this incident demonstrates to me how we in the states have been spoiled by the expectation that Wilco will make their way to our region once or twice a year. I really admire those Wilco fans in Europe, Canada, or Australia where they don't get to see the band in concert as frequently as we do, but they still persevere.

Anyone who allows this rescheduling to be merits to turn against the band, good riddance. Be disappointed, maybe a little mad for a little while, blow some steam off, but c'mon people, some of the reaction has been pretty ridiculous!

  16. If I was Jeff or anyone else in the band and I read some of the posts regarding the Charleston rescheduling, I might cancel the August show altogether.

Get a life people. I'm sorry, but Wilco owes the people of Charleston absolutely nothing (or those that were coming from out of town). "Half of it's you, half is me" ... so exactly how have all of these pissy fans contributed one-half? I'm interested in hearing how one rescheduling of one concert constitutes such absurd levels of backlash and cries of sellout.

All Wilco does is stream many concerts for free, do charity concerts and then allows them to be taped and distributed for free, do residency shows which they allow two of them to be webcast, officially stream their albums for free months in advance, give free bonus material on the web for those who purchase the CD's and generally make themselves available for photos with fans after the show.

Does purchasing one concert ticket for a show that had to be rescheduled discredit all of the above?

What has happened to this board? I really didn't expect this type of backlash. I know it's not everyone, and I appreciate all those who are defending the band, but c'mon, this site usually demonstrates the best you could expect from a fansite.

And just because someone might catch them on SNL and come to Wilco now doesn't mean they're dumb or stupid or will like Wilco for all the wrong reasons. Talk about tooting your own horn. I didn't get into the National until Boxer kept getting all the press coverage it did. I didn't know they had already released 3 proper albums prior. Know what I did? I purchased their back catalog and love their albums.

I am bummed about Charleston. I took time off, and reserved a nice hotel. I made arrangements for people to take care of a number of personal and professional obligations I have in order to be freed up and enjoy the weekend. Make no mistake, I am disappointed. We can't reschedule the full weekend experience my wife and I were planning in August, the timing is just not right.

Well, we're still going to go to Charleston, enjoy the town, enjoy the food, watch SNL, probably listen to a lot of Wilco to and from the city, and make the best of it. And when August rolls around, it looks like I'll go the concert without the wifey. It won't be a long weekend, just the concert. And I will enjoy every minute of it. And whenever Wilco or Jeff plays anywhere near Charlotte, I'll be in front of my computer trying to order the best seats the minute the tickets go on sale.

And I will try to forget some of the more disappointing reactions that some "fans" had and be reminded that the core group of Wilco fans are the most generous and levelheaded people you could ask for in terms of fanbase. It's not just the band that shares music freely, the VC community has been incredibly gracious in recording and sharing concerts and DVD's and Demos.

    my $0.02.

  17. While I agree with everything kimcatch22 has stated (and for the most part, everyone has contributed well to this topic), I must chime in and add my $0.02.

Maybe "hate school" was a bite harsh, so can't we move past that and get to the real issues at hand. First, as someone who works at a graduate school, has one masters degree and is hoping to start a second, not all teachers / instructors / professors are equal. Some stink at their jobs and don't deserve their position. University professorships are also a privilege and we students pay an awful lot and should expect excellent quality. Yes, some (or many) students are lazy, apathetic, and unmotivated. You know what? They should fail and make way for motivated students who don't have the opportunity. What are the excuses for lame professors? Do we get our money back when our teachers SUCK? It works both ways. How many professors are truly inspired by and motivated for the good of the students? Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but the pendulum can swing both ways.

Second, not all students learn in the same fashion. I suck at exams. I could research and write term papers all day. Am I a better student than someone else just because it is easier for me to write research papers? Or are they a better student than me because timed exams are easier for them? Personally, I think students should be given the option of choosing one or the other. Are some students lazy and unmotivated or just frustrated by the system? I honestly don't know the answer.

Third, I get what edwar591 was referencing in regards to cursive writing. The purpose of education should not just be technique or method (or securing a vocation) but also the development of critical thinking tools. When pressed for time, most of my classes gutted the development of critical thinking. Why are some college graduates the dumbest people I know? Because they were able to pass through college without ever really developing their minds and brains (if they had any to begin with).

Finally, I hate the entitlement that has crept into education where mediocrity is the new "above average" and everyone feels entitled to an A or B. But you know what, I HATE even more the spineless institutions, professors, and administraters who concede, give such grades to undeserving students, and then lament about the crisis of education. Professors and institutions are either a part of the solution or a part of the problem. There is no in-between. Someone plagarizes, flunk 'em or kick them out.

Personally, I loved every minute of college, every cold piece of pizza I ate, and every movie night I hosted in my dorm or apartment. I also appreciated MANY of my professors, you know, the ones who cared about the students and the class and were not there just to stroke their neurotic and narcissistic self-importance and own issues of status and entitlement.

I hope all those invested in education on both sides of the coin appreciate the privilege and do their part to preserve (or enhance) the quality and availability of a college education (man, I just sounded like I was running for office or something).

    Cheers!

P.S. If I came across as cranky, I plan to hit the gym later tonight so hopefully any aggression will disappear.
