  1. It's being delivered today. I won't be able to pick it up until tomorrow night, and when I get home my wife will be hosting her craft group, so I won't be able to plug it in until Wednesday. Gonna be a long two days.

Damn. If you want to come over you can plug into my amp.

  2. John Cale.

The true music geeks don't underrate him, I don't think. But he is so very overshadowed by the more-flamboyant, so-very-New Yorker-ly Lou Reed that most "normal" people don't even know that he exists. But, for my money, his solo career has been light years better, and certainly more-interesting than that of his more-famous former bandmate.

A friend turned me on to Fear recently. What a fine frickin' record.

Mark Olson's post-Jayhawks group with Victoria Williams.

nice to see this getting some love. My Own Jo Ellen is way better than any Olsen-less era Jayhawks stuff.

    Mansour Seck's 2 solo records

    Freakwater.

  3. if you pause the video at 40:12 you get a different angle of Jay's board which shows in profile the shape of some of those pedals.

at 42:03 or so he hits the white boss pedal three or four times in rapid succession- my guess is that he's using the tuner bypass as a kill switch in the noisy bit- can't really hear it though.

He definitely makes extensive use of tremolo in the song, i don't think it's amp trem, so that points toward the tremodillo (or at least a different trem unit)

  4. You got me. The light color on the battery compartment of the Arion pedal makes me think either a compressor, tuner, or equalizer, maybe a stereo delay or phaser.

The Memory Man theory is a good guess, but yeah, not enough knobs and I actually think that it's not wide enough. It may be a pedal turned on its side?

I'll have a watch/listen to that ACL again when i get a chance and see if my ears can help me determine if there's any obvious candidates (like phaser). I din't know he'd used a blue box. that things are quite often maligned in the gear-snob world.

Some slapback delay makes sense, and so does some compression before it, for those country moments like Forget the Flowers.

If the Boss is a tuner, the "Arion" probably isn't. And the Boss definitely looks like a tuner (white, no knobs)

if anyone starts a thread on a gear forum could you post a link here please?

  5. So I've had this idea for a while now but based on the discussion in another thread (which incidentally I also started), I decided to finally articulate it.

It comes from the ideas of Isaiah Berlin and the Greek poet Archilochus before that, who said "The Fox knows many things but the Hedgehog knows one big thing."

Basically I view the AM through SBS years as the "fox" years when each record broke into previously unchartered territory, and was accomplished by a different lineup. The band ran quickly from alt- country through lush pop through dissonant noise to 70s soft rock.

But starteing with W(TA), and then with TWL, no new territory has been discovered. W(TA) was the first record with a lineup identical to that of the previous record. They had the residency under their belt, where they went through the entire catalogue. There was an idea of what Wilco was, and the band curled up into a little ball and started trying to discover the "big thing" within itself.

The first phase roughly followed a bell curve with AM and SBS being lesser works that the ones inbetween. The second phase seems to be following the same course, as Wilco gets better at doing the hedgehog thing. The presupposition of this is that TWL is better than W(TA) which most, but not all , of you would agree with.

If there is merit to this theory, I hope we can look forward to some more masterpieces in the future.

It is just convenient coincidence that the record at the height of the fox bell curve is called what it is.

Ok, thanks for reading this far and now you can start telling me how full of shit I am:)

  6. our next review, again in Polish: http://detektor.muzz...ny-dysk-franka/

and again the amusing google translate version:

Genesis of the birth of Frank's Hard Drive is quite original and it is possible that a bit far-fetched. But when her group members interested in trying to repeat their music listeners, and I quote it.

"Being in a band Frank's Hard Drive has inspired a man named Frank, who left Poland and moved to China. He left such an inspirational device, like your hard drive. That this is a source of beauty, inspiration, and most of all urge to magically influenced by knowledge of the five guys who have joined forces to share with the world his newfound faith. Hard Drive is now back with a man named Frank, but the band members live with the legacy of what was given them experience in this crucial time. "

To believe in this or treated as a marketing trick - not try to resolved. I can also tell what really happened on the disk was Frank. One thing is certain, the music quintet is as intriguing as the contents of said device.

Based on a noisy but melodic, alternative rock group that is making a move tours in various other musical areas, so distant from each other, such as ska, funk, rock and country music (of course, are only clues, it's hard here to talk about one particular species), performing all the great lightness. Enough to play like her EP. Publisher titled simply "Frank's Hard Drive" was released in Half Eaten Records a few weeks ago and has seven very successful composition. If you are looking for a serene, fatigue-free plates for the summer - Hard Drive Frank is the perfect proposal.

  7. Another review, this time in Polish: http://www.thekrak.com/2012/07/franks-hard-drive-ep/

or the google translate version, amusing in its own right:

Frank's Hard Drive is a very unusual team wmiksowany among dozens of more or less underground warehouses Krakow. Unusual mainly because all its members are from English-speaking countries (USA, Ireland, England), so they can boast a slightly different perspective on music and the associated world. Certainly, a look that is in many ways reflected in their work.

So far, the team has little seniority, as it was founded in September 2011. But it works very rapidly - within a few months of playing together was their first EP recorded, mixed and mastered by another foreigner - Jonathan Stapleton. EP was released in early June, its color, a little frivolous cover and a light tone blending into the atmosphere of the upcoming holidays.

The biggest advantage is its board of problems. Franks Music in simple and gentle way pours from the speakers and seamlessly blends into the atmosphere, in no way interfering with Tor, after which the procedure is our day. The lightness is noticeable already in the titles of the songs ("Playground", "Sky Blue"), the texts relate to ordinary human elements of daily life ("If you wanna feel like a Summer's Day, then watch out for the rain") disc is nice background, from time to time we focus our attention on individual lots of music. It is light and pleasant, although in a way which sounds a bit amateurish.

Characteristically hoarse voice of a singer (Phil Soanes) operates in a specific register, creating a relaxed (but not boring) tone composition. Other instruments are a mix of melody and noise. Guitars (Phil Soanes, Greg Neuwsma) sometimes sound rock, but often change the nature and oscillate on the border between India and the country. Dry and weird spatial sound of drums introduces a note of uncertainty regarding the human drummer (Mark Bryan). Bass guitar (Shaun O'Neill) is a strong backbone of a whole, giving the album a bit more determination. An interesting finish is trąbkowe inserts (Ian Jenkins), although sometimes they seem a little too much.

The whole ep to keep hoping that the team as the play will become more common and harder to decide define its character and its subsequent proposals will become a tasty morsel for fans of light tones.
