  1. I wasn't sure what to make of the release idea - the "let's just drop it for free" plan.  in retrospect, it was pretty amazing way to hear an album for the first time. No preconceived notions, no long interviews about the songs, no reviews tainting your view, no singles to give an indication of where the sound might be headed - just sitting down and listening to what was created.

That was the most exciting couple of rock and roll days I've had in a long, time that's for sure...borrowed a friend's wall projecter and stayed up till 5 a.m. to watch the Pitchfork show. Fantastico.

  2. after a few more listens, this record goes from great to freaking fantastic.  I am obviously in new album euphoria, and judgments are clouded, with no benefit of perspective, but I didn't have this reaction to the last few records, although I ended up liking them a lot.  I wonder if the reverse will happen here.  Hope not!

I was just about to post this:

A few listens in now I'm thinking "Yes!"

    So I guess I agree.

  3. Only weak link on this album is king of you, mostly because it doesn't seem to stand out due to it being somewhat of a continuation of the song before it. That's probably my only complaint at the moment

that's what i like about it: best segue they've done since Red Eyed and Blue> I Got You.  I think they've been listening to Parquet Courts, who use that trick several times on Light Up Gold.

  4. From the places on the OPs list, I've been to Morocco and Croatia.

Morocco: Flew into Agadir, as most of the resort package deals from these sorts do. Nothing special, get out as fast as you can because there are so many other places much more worth seeing. Drove through the High Atlas to Marrakech, stopping overnight along the way. Never have I seen a starrier sky than that night. Marrakech was like walking back in time (if you can dig a bit deeper than the tourist market). Then to Essaoiura (sp?). A beautiful city by the see with gnawa music on the streets. I'd go back to Morocco in a heartbeat.

Croatia: Zagreb is ok, but not really unlike many other cities from the former Austro-Hungarian empire. Worth a day or two if you fly in, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. The Dalmatian coast is the true gem, and Istria is great too. For cities, swim around the walls of Dubrovnik (south on the Dalmatian coast) or wander the streets of Rovinj (Istria).  Don't limit yourself, there are literally hundreds of islands in between those two places, and lots of ferries and bridges to connect them. Definitely beautiful. Croatian people aren't unfriendly but can be a bit tiresome, the men in particular (All the bravado and machismo of the Italians but lacking in most of the charm).

... my ancestral hometown in Slovakia are my bucket list places.

Out of curiosity, what town in Slovakia? I'm not far away and have been through several times...

  5. Wow, a lot of harsh words for Nels.  Eventually he will leave the band (or not) because he is certainly the senior citizen of the group, but damn he does just fine most of the time.  Clearly he is what Jeff wants as second guitar.

yes, people need to chill out and let Wilco be as they want to be.

  6.  I think the key might be getting a producer who can push Wilco in the right directions.

The Jay Gatsbys of the world sing the praises of Jim O'Rourke.  Being oldish myself, I wonder what people like John Cale or Daniel Lanois might do.  Looking locally, Tim Rutili would be an interesting choice, and what about Albini?

  7. After recent back trouble, I don't feel like carrying around more than necessary, so I'm off to the gig tonight with only three pedals: a fuzz face clone, a Timmy, and a a Boss tuner. I haven't gigged with that few since I've owned more than three pedals.
