  1. yeah, that's it: taxman - stereo (track 11 to the right) remastered taxman - mono (must be vinyl source) unremastered (is that a word?) you should also be able to hear on the mono version how the percussion fits into the mix, and that bass is thumping because its sound is being boosted by the drums, and vice versa. edit: also, here's so people don't complain and say youtube has better sound than amazon clips (this sounds even weaker)
  2. Maybe they are. I can't remember what page I posted them on. Remember they are both in bad bitrate, but only the stereo has been remastered.
  3. R Kelly's Ignition (Remix) is an unbelievably catchy song.
  4. when you say you couldn't hear a remarkable difference, what differences did you hear? the mono version has that jagged guitar right up front with everything playing second fiddle to that, in the stereo mix it's not up front. the mono version is driving and powerful - and remember that the mono version is not remastered, the stereo clip i posted is remastered - so the remastered mono is going to sound even better. if you've got rubbish speakers then the best way to hear the problem with the stereo mix is through headphones - that's when the mix really sounds bad, speakers blends the sound a li
  5. I'm not surprised, but I've only skimmed over it all. I don't hate pitchfork and I don't love them. I'm just saying that their musical tastes mainly reflects the American marketplace, especially when it comes to their choices in pop music, and the more poppy indie/guitar based music - that's all i was saying.
  6. Pitchfork's list is clearly an American list. It's not a world list. Maybe Justin Timberlake and Rhianna would be on the list if Pitchfork was from the UK (for example), but Kelly Clarkson wouldn't even make a shortlist. Nor would a lot of those other bands like Weezer be on it. It'd include Sugababes and Girls Aloud instead of Clarkson, to fulfill that quota; and that's the case for most of Europe. Probably Asia and Africa and The Arctic Pitchforks would have an entirely different list too.
  7. Joanna Newsom has apparently got a double album coming out later this year. She's never made a live album. I think the thing is that you go and see these bands live, and use that as a gauge as to how good they are. I don't think most bands are that great live nowadays, because the music they make is a bit to complicated to play live, and also the people just aren't good enough to play it live. It's a different culture than the 50s and 60s. You don't need to be a virtuoso to make music that is like a virtuoso. Saying that, I think modern musicians are far more interesting on record than they ha
  8. that's actually not true. mp3 cuts off high end and low end frequencies to make the file smaller. saying that people can't tell the difference, as such, doesn't mean to say that there isn't a difference. it's like making a meal with different ingredients, although at the end you can't pick out every flavour doesn't mean that every ingredient isn't important. equally some people just don't have the pallet to taste things properly in the first place. the point i was actually making about mp3's was actually the fact that they are easily skipable, i rarely listen to a whole song on my computer - i
  9. There is buzz about certain bands and then that buzz stops because those bands stop making great music. Bands that actually continue to make great albums continue to get a lot of press. It's as simple as that. The fact that people stop talking about Ryan Adams or blah blah blah is because they haven't made a good album in years, but that doesn't mean to say these same people that aren't talking about him anymore don't think his good albums aren't good anymore. Likewise, people will only forget about Wilco if they stop touring based on their current form of albums, because they aren't very g
  10. Good God, I just watched the video presentation they had. I love the way they make out there is something special about the artwork on these new cds, when in fact all they need to say is that it is Original Artwork. Pretty much everyone has learnt the lesson from the shitty cds of the 80s - and Original Artwork is far from a special selling point. Also, would you say "Sgt Pepper" or "Sgt Pepper's"? Cos personally I'd say Pepper - if I was going to add the 's I'd not stop there and say the whole thing.
  11. QVC - classy. I think the Rutles say it best - "All You Need Is Cash!" Oh, actually if you read the shipping date, it's still 09/09/09. Even though the big print says this: "Celebrate the iconic music of The Beatles! QVC brings you 14 digitally remastered CDs one month before the worldwide release date. Jam out with "The Beatles: Rock Band"limited-edition bundle. Plus, shop apparel, collectibles, and more." The big print giveth and the small print taketh away!
  12. i've got a feeling you're going to end up being right. but, seeing as how they've really handled their catalogue so so badly in the past you never know what is gong through their heads. that's why it's such a hard decision to make.
  13. if you're talking about Cornershop, then you've missed out on Handcream For A Generation, which is the album between this new one and When I was Born For The 7th Time. that's on youtube too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lT1mzg7eqo&feature=PlayList&p=59F107C56AE2907D&index=0 really great album as well, and totally ignored by most people.
  14. that tower records price works out as £139 as opposed to the £199 they are asking for from amazon.co.uk - trouble is that i'll get stung for import duty. damn it! damn it! damn it! i think i'd be up for paying that - even though it's still silly money. this has to be the most annoying musical "shall i? shan't i?" that i've ever had to make.
  15. yeah. all their albums have some killer songs on them, but this is the most consistent overall. it's strange that they are seen as one-hit-wonders for Brimful of Asha - and not even their damn version of it, which is a million times better than the sped up Norman Cook remix.
  16. "it's the roll off characteristics of history in the making, of all that is in the pantry, the good cookin' that my Ma is makin!" some of these songs are fuckin' brilliant looks like the whole album is on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqokAWq40_A everyone needs to be playing this during the summer months. certainly lots of people here will appreciate the sentiment behind "who fingered rock n roll" for one thing.
  17. if the kinks count then there is "alcohol" from muswell hillbillies, and "have another drink" from soap opera. edit. oh, sorry - current! that rules the kinks out.
  18. yeah. but, those clips on amazon are definately remastered. even with the low bitrate, they sound much crisper and fuller than the old cds. it's not the remastering of the stereo - or sound as such - i have a problem with, it's just that they sound flat compared to the mono ones, and that is the fault of the mixing. and that's based on the scratched up vinyl i've got, and mp3's dr ebbett. i can only imagine how good the remastered mono is going to sound.
  19. oh, i'll definately be doing that if i don't buy it. i'll only be sharing it with "collectors" though, cos that's the only people the remaining beatles think will be interested in it.
  20. i cancelled my preorders last week. after listening a number of times to the stereo clips, i came to the conclusion that i would always feel gyped if i had them only. so, i'm currently not getting it. the only thing is i need to either just fork out for the mono box set - or take a gamble that they'll release them seperately in the future. i think it's a pretty good gamble, but the other thing is that they don't and these mono box sets end up being like gold dust.
  21. if you want the albums that the beatles made themselves then get the mono ones. i can't understand why people don't understand that. the albums were made in mono - they were arranged in mono - the vocals were mixed in mono - everything was in mono. then the engineers took the bounced down tracks and panned them into stereo. there is no way in the world that the beatles would have made the albums sound like that if they were thinking about the finished results in stereo. is abbey road mixed in the same way? no. it's easy to say that doesn't mean mono is best. ok. if people think it isn't. but
  22. I think that's down to Rhino - they always do a great job of reissuing material. I think the fact that these beatles reissues are coming out at the same time as The Beatles Rock Band Game gives you an idea of how Apple treat their material.
  23. surely having mono and stereo on the same disc can't be as annoying as being ripped off like they're doing here? i mean, obviously the ideal thing would be 3 disc - 1 mono, 1 stereo, and a disc of bonus material. which is what the Bee Gees recently did with Odessa. but, i guess the beatles material doesn't warrant that kind of care.
