  1. i don't think there is such a thing. maybe it was a dream you had? the mono version isn't that much different in terms of the music - the only difference is that the cowbell & percussion come in later on the mono version. the mono version really puts the stabbing guitar sounds right up front - that's the sound of the taxman really sticking the knife in, which is totally lacking in the stereo mix. the ideal thing would be for them to put the stereo and mono either on the same disc (which would be easy for most of the albums, as they are short) or have them on a second disc - and get ri
  2. yep, they had no involvement in the stereo mixes, right up until Abbey Road - which they did in stereo. george martin didn't even do them, they got other engineers, because it was just seen as a fad. they aren't actually even in stereo as such anyway - it's called false stereo - where the 4 mono tracks (which have been bounced down however many times), or 2 tracks on some of the earlier stuff, are panned left and right and center, so that it creates a stereo effect. that's not how a proper stereo mix works really. don't take what you heard growing up as what is best. didn't the american rel
  3. everything sounds different, if you can't hear that then you might as well just stick with the versions you have already, i wouldn't fork out for the new remasters at all. the stereo version is, at best, an interesting alternative to hear the various parts seperated - it's not the proper song. the mono version is black and white, and the stereo is like Jaws 3D. everyone else releases their albums in mono today, if they were recorded in the mono era, with stereo alternatives as a bonus. if anything the stereo versions should be the collectors box set, and the mono versions should be the standar
  4. "all hail the truth, because the truth is turned on!"
  5. great stuff. even got a dylan cover on it!
  6. it's the best option in terms of getting the best versions. however, it's not the best option based on the price. if you have the money, get it. the mono mixes are so much better there really isn't any kind of contest from that point of view. and yeah, the past masters is in the mono box set too - all the same tracks in mono (old brown shoe sounds amazing in mono, and very dull in stereo for one).
  7. yeah, everything sounds much better than the old versions. the trouble with the stereo stuff is that some songs work with the weird stereo panning they used in the past, and some don't. that taxman clip is a good example of how it doesn't. all of rubber soul suffers from this too. oh, that taxman clip on amazon is in stereo - put some headphones on and listen and you'll wonder how in the world they didn't remix the tracks for stereo properly. the far right of the channel is virtually empty apart from the cowbell and tambourine (knives and forks, or whatever it is) coming in randomly. on t
  8. you can hear some samples on amazon now. clips from revolver and the white album. they're low bitrate, but still sound fuller than the old cds. here it's just a shame that they should have remixed them, to make them sound better still. cos the mono box set in the apple bullshit wagon is tagged as for the purists. just listen to the taxman clip with headphones and tell me that album wasn't made to be heard in mono!
  9. if people won't be able to tell the difference between these and the old cd's they're hard of hearing - it will be really obvious. the stereo cds won't sound as good as the LOVE remixes, cos they're not remixed. but, if people fork out for the mono versions then they will sound better than the LOVE versions, they'll also be different mixes (other than just being mono) from the other versions so you'll hear the difference in what is played too. download it illegally and you'll see what i mean.
  10. having been disappointed by a whole bunch of albums from bands i like this year, i was really surprised at how much i love this. both bitter tea and widow city seemed to be pushing their sound to a place i didn't like so much. the tunes were still there, but i just didn't think they recorded them as well as they should have. everyone tends to say blueberry boat & rehearsing my choir are just as all over the place as the other albums, but i thought the sounds of the albums and the arrangements were consistent across both of them - which is why they are good. that's where they'd been going w
  11. yeah, in the other thread he'd just written the word "volume".
  12. see i think that stuff like Oar and VU&Nico are totally about the mood of the performances and the mindset of the people recording it at the time - the ambiance etc..., the songs, as such, aren't necessarily great without those factors. so i think covering them just automatically falls flat. all the ones i've heard on the website are like that. it's not that they are bad at all - i enjoyed listening to them once, but there's nothing there to make me want to go back and listen much again. i'm definately interested in hearing Oar by Beck and Wilco, but it's never going to be better than th
  13. true, but if you continue in the same style as your title you're going to run into problems with volume 2, cos there's only one other hole I can think of right now. ps. i've downloaded your mix, but not listened to it yet - i'm sure it's great though.
  14. i'd like to see beck cover: 01 there's a riot goin' on - sly and the family stone 02 saint dominic's preview - van morrison 03 the doughnut in granny's greenhouse - bonzo dog band 04 the white album - the beatles 05 rock bottom - robert wyatt i can't see that happening ever though.
  15. downloading now, but you really should have called it "More Soul Than A Sock With A Hole"
  16. I agree with Analogman on this. The VU covers are ok, but that's it - nothing worth writing home about. I think that he's chosen that and Oar because they are actually really simple songs to play, and so can be done fast, but he'd do better covering albums with a bit more room for experimentation.
  17. what do you both think? i think it's wonderful. actually i'm going to listen to it again now.
  18. all of the engineers, producer, etc... are still alive though, and that's what i thought a making of "album" would be about - how they got the sound, or at least how they worked in the studio etc... even a making of the remasters would be more interesting than those comments from the band.
  19. comments about how George Harrison thought Rubber Soul and Revolver are part 1 and 2 of the same ideas etc... is that really "the making of revolver"? or some old man talking crap because he can't be bothered or can't remember what really happened at the time? Revolver sounds nothing like Rubber Soul, so those sort of comments are just meaningless. oh, well.
  20. I can't believe Mikael has seen the tv show Look Around You! I wonder how he found out about that? For anyone that has not seen it, it's a comedy show from the uk which spoofs children's learning shows and a program called Tomorrow's World - from the uk. I don't know if america had similar shows, so maybe people won't get the joke. If you ever see Mikael again, you can tell him this interesting fact: Peter Serafinowicz (man in the Synthesizer Patel clip that says, "Well I suppose that's good news for all you bassoonists out there. Don't go throwing away our bassoons just yet") was the voice of
