  1. I think Anna Karenina will be next for me too. I have to finish Don Quixote first and I'm a slow reader, so I probably won't finish both until the the middle of summer.

I noticed this weekend while reviewing a journal I keep that for the past 3 years during Spring I've tackled one large novel (7-800 pages).

Large novels being complimentary to sunny cool evenings outside on the porch along with refreshing beverages.:beer

  2. I saw this bike a few weeks ago and fell in love! It's an Electra Townie. I can't take the hunched over position on a mountian bike anymore. I get to pick it up tonight!!! :dancing

    Congrats on the new wheels.

I saw this Electra model, a Ticino, which apparently is a series released late last year for the first time just this past weekend and am seriously considering it for kicking around town. Simple lines, a beautiful crankset single speed w/ a chain guard. Not as heavy as you'd expect a chro-moly frame to be either.

  3. I'm a Redskins fan, and have always been a fan of Donovan. So, one would think I'd be happy about this, but I think my concern for the ability of our Offensive line to protect him kinda dilutes my enthusiasm. + Who does he throw too?

P.S. I'm not sold on the whole idea of the Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis and "Fast " Willie Parker veteran running back corps. being thrown at the NFC East defenses as a good idea. Just to throw that out there....

  4. I would think a little bit of toothpaste might bring out a shine; ( I don't really know where I'm getting this from, something in the back of my head that I picked up somewhere/sometime).

Full disclosure: I gotta couple of old LPs and I don't polish them at all, so my advice is probably pretty useless overall.

Buying a new one seems like a rational solution too tho.

  5. fantastic_mr_fox1.jpg

This was exactly what I expected it to be. Which means if, like me your a fan of Wes Anderson films you going to enjoy it.

I never paid much attention to the press on this one, so I went in pretty much with just the basic concept of the plot and a curiosity of the dynamics therein.

Of the three principals Gyllenhaal comes across as the most genuine. Maguire is somewhat convincing but even in the scenes where he becomes un-hinged you often get the sense that he's really not exploiting the characters' inner struggles for all they're worth. Portman feels like window dressing and some of the more "dynamic" bits of dialog seem over the top and out of place; ( I.E. the statement the oldest daughter makes during the dinner scene after Maguire's character returns home).....I don't know how old that little girl was supposed to be, but that line was seriously a little too "formed and mature" for her character. Although, the kid gets overall points for some terrific dramatic facial expressions.

    Meh.

  6. They already topped Boxer...with Alligator. :thumbup

I kinda love Alligator too since it was my introduction to 'em.

Fallon seems to be getting all the good bands lately

    QFT.

Just watched the performance last night. And then I remembered I have tickets for 4/22&4/23 :yay !

Also, it's been mentioned before in other threads but bears repeating: Bryan Devendorf is a hell of a drummer.

  7. just read Cloudsplitter

Do you reccomend that? I've had it a pile of books I picked up since last spring but haven't been compelled to pick it up.

Picked this up Saturday afternoon and I'm almost done with it. A nice read and so far I've really enjoyed the reflections of how the connection with Jeff Magnum came about and the background on the Elephant 6 Collective.

  8. Did Kay make guitars that were sold under different brand names? That was a fairly common practice among instrument manufacturers back in the '50s-'60s, and might explain the different headstock badge.

    I believe so.

There we are...jimmyjimmy, where did you find that photo? yours?

No, not mine. You got me interested so I did a quick Flickr search and sorted it by recent uploads.

  9. Dammit, really? The only Auster I didn't enjoy reading was Brooklyn Follies. I tend to like his drier, more aloof stuff, like Book of Illusions. It seems from reviews that this one is kinda like that. What do you think?

I was thinking about this after I finished it: "Was it really the work (the novel/story) or is it the reader (me) and where I am right now. Because, honestly this is his first book I didn't enjoy.

I really liked "Book of illusions". I was interested in the main character, his life falling apart and then recovering by starting on the project with the "lost films".

That leading into the main part of the story with the resurrection of the long thought dead silent era star and elements of his back-story. That was compelling and interesting and it moved along at a good pace: Auster revealing elements of the the narrative a bit at a time to keep the reader engaged.

This one just felt..."meh" to me. I was indifferent about the main character, and after some sensational/ scandalous events of his past are disclosed I didn't feel repelled enough by them or sympathetic enough towards him to really care about how his part in the story resolved itself. The antagonist, while portrayed as horrible human being really could've used more fleshing out to be truly nefarious.

I dunno...I just kept finding myself throughout the book thinking of different ways I would've responded as these characters, and how I would have portrayed them differently had I written them. That's something I've never done w/regards to Auster before.

All that said, I loved "Brooklyn Follies" so you should probably read this one!

  10. I wasn't able to find an example online of the one with a sliding pickup. It's possible it wasn't a Dan Armstrong, but I don't know what else it could have been. Maybe it was a one-off. Judging by the band's equipment, they seemed to be sort of wealthy, so maybe it was a custom feature.

Good shot of a 1970 model currently available.

  11. I really, really appreciated the part of his speech where he thanked NBC for supporting him for nearly 20 years, not to mention the part where he talked about how he hated cynicism. His final speech was full of grace and gratitude, and I really admired that considering that no one would really blame him for something a little more biting.

So did I. A very graceful exit.

I thought Hanks sucked, and the ending performance didn't go over very well either. The Farrell bit is old.

Blunt, yes..but I happen to agree.

BTW. Many of you guys are aware how Conan has supported the White Stripes over the years and how often they appeared on the old LNw/C.O.

As a fan of both I was kinda hoping they'd somehow come together for Conan's final Tonight Show.

Jack White plays an old sixties Silvertone 1485 amplifier; (only guitar geeks know this obscure stuff, so bare with me here a moment). A 'large-ish" silver-grey thing w/ aluminum panels and sparkly grill cloth that looks like an old 60s radio set on steroids. You don't see them around very often. So it was with more than a bit of astonishment that I noticed one, there sitting on the stage in the dark behind Neil as he played.

With that said, I was a bit disappointed with the whole "Freebird" thing.
