Neil Young seems a very appropriate guest for C.O.'s final Tonight Show musical guest. I hope they both let it all hang out.

This is great.

The best thing about this is a segment in the special features which showcases Edge's soundcheck, during which he works his way through "Bad'.

Overall...meh.

Blind Date starring Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson.

I really loved this a lot. It's rather darkly themed. A married couple in distress after the death of their daughter and their rather unorthodox efforts to re-engage with one another. Tucci directs and co-wrote this. They both deliver great performances.

I'm curious as to how the rest of you guys feel about Conan's first year as Tonight Show host.

As a big fan of his old Late Night gig I'm a little disappointed in the content and style of his new show. I know it's geared for a different audience, a larger demographic, and that there are a great many factors therein to consider. I feels "cluncky" to me. It's hard to describe really. Back in the old days when he was struggling at Late Night there was still a spark to the material that they seem to have misplaced... ( full disclosure: I was never a fan of Leno. Ever.)

Additionally, I think Fallon is doing a pretty damn good job overall. I record, Letterman, Fallon and O'Brien each night primarily just to check out the musical acts and while i was never a fan of Fallon on SNL I find myself watching the majority of the episodes.

^ How's that? I admit I've been scared off a bit by the presence of a choir.

Don't be. It's pretty fantastic. I like the way the choir is basically used as an instrument unto itself adding phrasing and colorations to the arrangements. Duke Pearson's "Cristo Redentor" is worth the price of admission alone.

I'm pretty committed to borrowing books from the library these days, but I think this one may warrant a purchase. I'm kind of torn between, if I get it from the library, even with renewals I'll still have a deadline to finish (which might help); or, if I buy it, I can take my time and not make myself crazy.

Tell you what, I love IJ so much and my enthusiasm so great at the prospect of another falling under it's spell that I hereby offer to send you my dog eared, paperback copy ( the one w/out the highlighted passages!). Besides, I just dig the idea of passing it along...

Not as bad as I expected but not great.

I couldn't get through it. The setting was too bleak, too dystopian. Never had a real chance to get invested in the characters.

Loved this, Loved it!

This thing is like candy, instant gratification. "Here's the bad guys, and why you should hate them. Here's our flawed heros and why you should pull for 'em. Here is the premise, interesting isn't it? Here's the moment that, even though you know it's coming still evokes a little 'eeep' outta you when it happens! Here's the conclusion: satisfying huh"?

It's right up there w/ Jackie Brown as my fav. Tarantino flick.

"I will collect my hemmoroid pillow and bid you adieu!!"

I forgot about that...that was brilliant.

There was one skit, two weeks back, that was probably the best thing I'd seen on SNL in years. Jason Sudeikis plays a southern gentelman, dressed in a plaid-ish suit sporting a gray wig and goatee looking and sounding vaguely like Col. Harland Sanders. He in the middle of an interview at the Johnson Space Center circa 1970 something. He sits across a desk from Will Forte who is conducting the interview. Forte wears a stringy wig and short sleeved button down shirt, pens in the breast pocket. The office is wood paneled and there's a window behind Forte. There's a bowl of potato chips on the desk, and as Forte's character is called away outside the office he implores Sudeikis' character not to touch the potato chips.

What follows is accusatorial, frenetic, a little gross and plenty funny. It had the feel of the imaginative work from the early days of the show.

I wish they'd do more adventurist/off beat stuff like that instead of revisiting the same old tired characters week after week.

The Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival was great this year. Dr. Dog was indeed a headliner, along with the Flecktones, and they

put on one hell of a show. In spite of some technical difficulties - e.g. bass amp failure - they played with lots of energy &

good humor. The set was an homage to quality rock-n-roll - I really like these cats. I've attached a few pics for your enjoyment

i LOVED Marry Me, but other than 3-4 songs, don't like Actor nearly as much (as evidenced by it's lack of mention in my EOY list)

 

Actor is certainly more impressive/ambitious musically, but the songs & melody from Marry Me just aren't quite there. Marrow is a barnburner tho

 

 

I zig where you zag: I'm digging Actor more, I think, because she's taking more chances here and being more discordant/ getting away from melody.

P.S. Kyle: Great to see Brakes and Twilight Sad so high on your list.
