  1. The Ramones...

    Montreal - Metropolis 1992?

I had never been to a concert before and couldn't understand why we weren't trying to get closer to the stage. When the set started, there was a total rush to the stage like nothing I have experienced before or since. These big beefy punk guys with nose rings and tattoos were coming back with bloody noses. My first experience with a mosh pit - intense!

  2. The whole album just seemed safe for them, from top to bottom. No real change in mood, atmosphere. No continual vibe from start to finish. (Except blah) No ride to be taken on.

    Perhaps Bennett was Tweedy's muse...

  3. Have only taken my (then) 5 year old to a Wilco show. 1) Bring many forms of ear protection. The music might not be as loud at a solo show but the crowd will hopefully be! 2) Understand that if the child is not interested or bored, you may have to pack it in early. 3) Listening to Wilco (or any music) as opposed to experiencing it live may be easy for us to understand but not for a child of that age. My daughter had watched all the videos (at her request) and heard all the songs but her favourite part of her first live indoor concert experience were the escalators in the lobby and the apple juice at intermission...

  4. California Stars (live)

    Spiders (live accoustic)

    Box Full of Letters

    Ashes of American Flags (live)

    Too Far Apart

ooooo - where can I get a copy of Spiders acoustic?

    Apple Cherry Blossom

    Short Sleeves Blues

    Simple Purell (Being Clean)

    Tigers (Shank Lost)

The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of A Misbegotten Fool

All of these are off the forthcoming Wilco album which I have thanks to my hot tub time machine.

Wait until you all see the cover art on this one.

    PM me for MP3s.

    huh?

  5. You make it sound like it is a bad thing. Like they are not completely fulfilled to be in Wilco as a collective.

I think of it like an actor or a director or a screenwriter. Once an actor or director finishes a project they move onto the next one. Likewise an actor may dabble in screenwriting or directing because they can and most likely want to do that. Or to make it even more in line with Wilco, an actor may be on a tv show (9 month commitment or so) and on their hiatus they can make a film during that time period.

There's a lot of reasons to go around the merry go round on this one, but I think they all share that nature of being a part of something and contributing to that and then maybe having a bigger part in something else where they can do what they want to do.

For a more personal example I can think of this for myself: I would love to and I am close to developing & producing my own tv show (on a local scale), but I also want to be involved in both smaller & bigger film projects either in a smaller role like a Production Assistant (or whatever) that way when I want to tackle my own projects as a writer, producer or director (bigger role) I can go through my network (obviously of the smaller films) and see who wants to help me out on it. Edit: And sometimes on some days I feel that the tv idea is more doable because I can find people to fill the air time with as opposed to finding people who would help me out on a film shoot for little to nothing in pay except more experience. So I guess....well there really is no direct comparison that I can make to say that this project of mine sounds like Wilco as opposed to the other project sounding like The Autumn Defense. I would wear big hats to do both projects except for being a PA on some film because they would find anyone to replace me.

Ok. I think I figured this one out. LOL. :stunned I would liken my tv show idea to The Autumn Defense because it derives from a passionate place of wanting to do it and the notion of it being somewhat smaller scale. These film ideas would be more like Wilco because the medium from which it derives is self contained (a film and an album) and there would be more than 1 out there. I also would take on more of a leadership role amongst collaboration to see my idea(s) become reality. You probably would never see me in my films, but somehow my personal touch or name would tip you off. And if I am a PA I most likely would be Leroy Bach. Sorry, I couldn't resist that one. (yeah...this is a bit of a stretch. tough to compare films and music.)

Damn you Madden! Off to bed.

    :) Sleep well!

  6. With all due respect to your husband, you do NOT need a new favorite band! There's a reason Wilco inspires such rabidity in its fans. Speaking as someone who has also questioned my lack of balance in music, I've decided to embrace the fact that Wilco is my passion, musically. Yeah, there's lots of other great stuff to listen to (I like Gillian Welch, the Silver Jews, Spoon...) but honestly, nothing else measures up. Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw once: "Can't nobody do you like Jesus." You know which word to substitute!

Oh, if you're English, as your spelling of favourite would imply, you might not get the weirdness of this american southern expression. But if you're listening to YHF, you know it doesn't get much better than that!

From Newfoundland actually - what's wrong with my spelling? :) It's frustrating because I can honestly say that I have never had a band that I could call a favourite before - until HE introduced me to Wilco. It took a while but it did rub off on me (please no more comments!) But now I feel like I've intruded on his space - his music thing. He has tried to get me into new stuff like the National, but primarly listens to oh, shall we say, avante-garde jazz, which I find very difficult to get into. I thought he would be happy that we have a common musical interest, but everytime I play Wilco (which is a lot but not horribly often) he says I need to find a new band... sigh...

I bet most husbands on this board would LOVE to have this problem...

  7. I have to say this cause it's been bugging me (I'm married to a bass player - sorry in advance)- they play Handshake Drugs on the Ashes DVD but I feel that they didn't show enough of John when the main bass line came in. During any Nels guitar solo they zoomed right in - but John was completely obscurred. Any comments?

Whoops - was meant to be attached to something else...
