  1. So, so happy for Braden.

We flew down to San Francisco for the Drive-By Truckers show @ the Fillmore Saturday night. Then saw Braden's perfect game the next day. It was the proverbial icing on the cake. My husband, a baseball nut, could not believe our luck. After all, had the Giants not been on the road, we probably would have been sitting at AT&T Park that afternoon rather than at Oakland Coliseum.

On deck: Wilco @ Snowmass, CO followed by the the Reds vs.the Rockies Labour Day weekend!

  2. The way Jeff pronounces important in Impossible Germany.

:thumbup (also, the way Jeff sings "fundamental")

Ken's drums in "Sunken Treasure" especially when they first crash in: "but there IS no sunken treasure..."

During "Hate It Here" live, the keys that sound like a phone: "I'll check the phone..."

Slightly off-topic, OK way off-topic: in "Blasting Fonda" the lines "in days of olden, silence was golden" sound so familiar. Can't put my finger on it. A little help?

  3. - the call & response vocal in "Sunken Treasure" (have to listen closely to hear it - Jeff's voice, drenched in reverb, calling out lines before he sings them)

When Jeff joins in on the last set of "do, do-do-do, do-do-do's" in "Hotel Arizona" (just before, "Hello, can you hear me?")

  4. a dude walked out and asked me what i was listening to and i said Wilco and he knew who i was talking about so, yay!

The company I work for formed an "Olympic Committee" that would meet periodically to discuss crap like staffing and transportation leading up to the Games. One of my best friends was asked to be on the committee. During one meeting someone non-chalantly mentioned that "some good bands" would be playing at the LiveCity venues. My friend jumped in with, "Yeah, like Wilco!" Everyone in the room turned and looked at her and said "Who?" Sigh.

  5. ... a woman standing next to me who knew all the words (and if you're reading this I mean no disrespect) sang loudly and clearly and just slightly out of key. Jeff heard her, gave her most of the song, waited for the third chorus or so, looked directly at her and shushed her, putting his index finger up to his lips with a big smile ... the woman just melted in embarrassed joy. Quite a moment.

This is what I mean by engagement. They're listening too. There's no show without the audience.

"Embarrassed joy." What a great description. I love this anecdote. Thanks for sharing.

  6. I flew into Hamilton on the 12th to see Blue Rodeo @ Hamilton Place (where Wilco had played a few weeks earlier.) The online fan club was presenting a 25th anniversary "album" after the show and I was lucky enough to go backstage to witness the presentation. Met Jim who joked whether it was OK for me to be wearing a Wilco shirt to a BR concert (I was wearing the one in my avatar.) I told him his band was in good company, knowing that he's a Wilco fan (and even had Jeff and Jay record a song on his first solo record.) Really wanted to meet Bob Egan, however, he wasn't around (either were Keelor or Boguski.)

  7. Don't judge me, but I flew down for this one year. It was worth it. Forget all commitments and go! I'm an enabler.

I'm actually flying to Hamilton Friday to see a Blue Rodeo show. I could always fly back to Vancouver "Via Chicago" (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

  8. And if I lived anywhere near Chicago, I would be all over this. This will be a wonderful couple of nights and I envy anybody close enough to do this.

A colleague and I just had this exact same conversation. Suddenly Chicago doesn't seem so far away from Vancouver. I can't believe I just checked out flights. Not that it would even be remotely possible to attend...

  9. Well, in honour of the Quebec City and Montreal shows, the husband and I just shared a plate of poutine at Place de la Francophonie, the French Cdn Olympic site. Real cheese curds! Tonight, it's back to LiveCity Yaletown, this time to see Blue Rodeo featuring former Wilco member Bob Egan!

  10. As much as the hub and I loved the Victoria show, we agreed that last night's show in the Hammer was, incredibly, even better. Great sound and outstanding setlist. "Poor Places", "Reservations" and "Box Full of Letters" were highlights. Loved it when one of the white stage lights hit John from the side and back casting a huge shadow of him and his bass on the left wall of the theatre. Jeff must have been feeling warm and fuzzy during the "Jesus, Etc." singalong as he momentarily assumed the fetal position at the front of the stage before getting up to join us for the last part! The "Hummingbird" mic twirl was a bit ambitious as it got away from Jeff and hit the stage with a thud. When the guys came back to begin the encore, he explained that he had meant to do that.

  11. I am thinking of Jeff and the boys coming out starting to play and everyone is seated. Seriously? If I was part of the band, I would think 'this sucks.'

I'm not entirely sure about that. In Victoria Friday night the fans gave the band a standing ovation as they hit the stage and I think they really appreciated that.

  12. Thanks for posting the setlist, bbop. LiveCity was a great festival venue, lots of Olympic spirit despite the weather and a nice contrast to Friday night's old theatre show in Victoria.

The JumboTrons saved the day (night) as at 5'5", I couldn't see much of the guys on stage. My only complaint: the cameras weren't trained on Jeff during the Hummingbird dance, I have to assume he did it!

I'm not sure "Broken Arrow" would have gone over that well. I think the crowd was equally split between bigtime Wilco fans and Olympic-free-concert partiers. "Jesus, Etc" wasn't a singalong, although Jeff did ask us to join in if we wanted to. I think we gave it a good shot. "One Wing", "Side with the Seeds" and "Misunderstood" were standouts for me. As bbop mentioned, the sound was great. Jeff prefaced "Hate It Here" by asking us to not take the song literally, the band loves Vancouver! He seemed like a "happy chappy."

(Thankfully, I missed Default. A friend said they were, at best, 1% better than Nickleback, i.e. they "really suck!")

  13. Our closest show is San Fran in May so I think we'll make a weekend of it. MLB will be in full swing (no pun intended) so the husband will be happy. The Giants will be out-of-town that weekend, however, the Athletics will be hosting the Devil Rays!

  14. Heard One Wing at my local grocery store in Toronto last week.

A few months ago I heard Impossible Germany

    at the same store.

I have never heard them on the radio in Canada.

I got into them when I went to Farm-Aid in Chicago a few years back.

The shame is I missed so many shows they played in T.O.

Looking forward to Hamilton next month!!!

Rich Terfry on CBC Radio Two Drive plays Wilco quite a bit. Always the same song, though. For the longest time it was "You and I." More recently it's been "Sonny Feeling." See you in the Hammer!
