  1. Awesome to hear that they did "Full 5 Paces!" I had been hoping they'd revisit some of the "oldies." I really think The Green Hour is a pretty underrated record, so perhaps they've got "Wellspring" or "Recuperating From The War" somewhere in their back pockets as well. :thumbup

And I haven't heard all of the new record yet -- I'm waiting for the vinyl, which I hear has been slighly delayed? -- but I do dig a few of the songs I've heard and look forward to hearing more...

Are they still closing with Big Star's "You Can't Have Me?" :cheers

Hi bbop...I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm not familiar with very much of Big Star so I couldn't tell you if that was the last song of the set. Sorry. :blush

I couldn't find AD's Solid Sound setlist posted under "After the Show." You wouldn't happen to have it, would you?

  2. I wonder when they'll make it to the West Coast?

I hope it's soon, Donna, but for now I'm really happy to have had the chance to catch them @ the Drake Underground! Fantastic show, they opened with "Tell Me What You Want", an early favorite for me off their latest record. The small room (capacity 150) had a nice sound. Open floor with a few couches/benches along the sides. Highlights for me were "Full 5 Paces", "We Would Never Die", "Spend Your Life" and "The Sun in California" (I'm partial to John's songs!)

Pat invited us to sing along on the first song of their 2-song encore, Bob Welch's "Sentimental Lady" ("14 joys and a will to be merry/And all of the things that we say are very/Sentimental gentle wind...") C'mon, you know it. We all know it.

They guys manned the merch table before/after the show as did the openers, Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, who were also great.

I had a chance to chat with Bob Egan before the show. He joked that it was his "big night out." We talked about stuff like baseball but mostly about the band he's been with for 11 years now, Blue Rodeo, who are sort of a Canadian institution. Real nice guy.

  3. I got mine in the mail on Friday, signed by John and Pat. Nice. Not Wilco, but nice. I want to listen to it a few more times before seeing them in December.

I haven't received mine yet so I purchased one from the iTunes store this morning. Going to see them in Toronto on the 9th. My first AD show!

  4. Suffer enough and you can damn well eat whatever you want.

This. I work out so that I can eat a burger or fudge brownie every once in a while without worrying too much about pushing maximum density. And also because I'm sort of an endorphin junkie. Like ponch1028 I exercise in the morning before work. I'm pretty lazy and will think of any excuse to not work out if I leave it until the end of the day. I did too much distance running in the late '90s/early '00s and incurred some chronic injuries so now I only run a couple times a week. The rest of the time it's cardio in the gym. I know I should rotate in some weight training but I find weights so boring. Maybe in the new year...

The music at the gym I go to is pretty brutal so an iPod is essential. I love that hour of working out and listening to good music. Such a great way to start the day.

  5. I'd read that these guys were great live, but I could never picture them having so much personality and energy.

I was the same way before seeing them at Malkin Bowl here in Vancouver earlier this month! They opened with "Anyone's Ghost" and "Mistaken for Strangers" and the energy was amazing.

Even their encore - "Runaway", "Mr. November", "Terrible Love" and "About Today" - which might seem tame (with the exception of "Mr Nov") was unbelievable!

Glad you had a great show, too.

  6. I'll try not to repeat stuff that's already been said. The festival surroundings were incredibly beautiful. Jeff said in his classic, understated way, something along the lines of, "You folks have a nice joint here."

My husband and I found a spot just to the left of the soundboard that had a great view of the stage thanks to the four-foot wide aisle that separated the unwashed masses from the VIP'ers. (I joke.) The sound here was perfect and surprisingly, there was lots of room to "boogie" as Mikael would say. And not too many talkers at all.

I'm with BoulderEagle: the "I'll Fight" > "Box Full of Letters" > "I'm Always in Love" run was excellent. "Ashes" was phenomenal and definitely a highlight. (I heard something metal hit the floor and bounce around for a bit at the YVR airport while waiting for our baggage and I swear it sounded exactly like the opening of "Ashes." I guess I still had Wilco-brain Tuesday night.)

Snowmass operates a free shuttle bus service around the village. During the festival the buses were running every 5 minutes which was much appreciated. A couple of guys at the back of our bus after the show were trading notes. One fellow said this was his second Wilco show and he thought it was was right up there amongst his best concerts, period. The other fellow said this was his 19th show and it ranked #19! What?! I wish I could hear his reasons but I couldn't. I just can't imagine anyone walking away from this show dissatisfied. Maybe he was expecting an acoustic/"An Evening With" type mini-set or maybe he thought he'd hear some rarities. I thought the setlist was perfect for a festival show and the band was so on!

I got the feeling that the guys weren't ready to leave after "Hoodoo." Unfortunately, event staff were already removing the white tablecloths from the VIP tables halfway through the song. That was sort of an "unclassy" move and I felt bad for the guys.

We had broomed to Snowmass from Denver along the I70 but chose to take the scenic route (relatively speaking) back via Independence Pass (elevation 12k feet!) and had a stunning view of the Continental Divide. Jeff was right, a "nice joint," indeed.

  7.

Anybody else going to this show?

Hey Shug...we're flying to Denver tomorrow and driving to Snowmass Friday morning. We last saw the band in Feb during the "Frozen Tundra" leg of this year's tour. Travel safely and enjoy the show!

  8. As a casual fan of CH I have to say I was blown away by their show last night in Vancouver. Solid 2-hour set. Particularly enjoyed "Distant Sun" "Private Universe" and "It's Only Natural" as well as beautiful versions of "Fall At Your Feet" and "Isolation" (featuring Sharon). I have to agree, these guys are incredible live.

  9. UPDATE and REVISION: We're up to 18 responses now, but is that really all? I know, some votes may actually represent 2 people, but still. . .where is everyone? Aren't there many more VCers than this going to be joining us in the Berkshires?

It would be great if people would not only vote but also add a comment, for two reasons:

    1. You can tell us a little something about you, where you're staying maybe or express a wish to connect with others, and

    2. It'll keep this poll bumped up to the top and thus more visible to people who only visit VC occasionally.

It's just about 3 weeks from now. Anyone who has any knowledge of a VC meet-up or who would like to arrange one, please jump in here. If no one else wants to do it, I'll volunteer. Just send me a message with your name, phone number, email address, number of people in your party, and where you're staying. I'll compile into a spreadsheet and will distribute to anyone who's interested. Of course, if any moderators or anyone else is planning to do this more officially, I will gladly bow out. But I for one am really looking forward to meeting in person some more crazed fans!

Your enthusiasm is infectious! Wish I could say 2 are coming from Vancouver, however, it just wasn't in the cards. Have a great time, everyone!

  10. Thanks very much for posting this. Jeff's response to the "Neil" question, which was sort of a stupid question, was brilliant.

(The interview aired on CBC Radio One on Oct 21 last year. It must have been taped the week before when the band played Massey Hall.)

  11. You call him out if he's out. And you call him safe if he's safe. And if you screw it up, it happens. You are human, and this is baseball, and that's what makes baseball better than every other sport.

This. From what I've seen and read (which admittedly, isn't a ton) almost everyone involved has reminded me why this is such a great game: Galarraga, what a class act, showing composure and remaining calm; Joyce, obviously contrite (devastated, really) and owning up to his error; Leyland, actually urging Tigers fans to cheer Joyce today and not boo him.

Maybe I'm trying too hard to put a positive spin on an unfortunate turn of events?

  12. Thanks to you guys, I decided to give a listen and I LIKE what I'm hearing!

I've gotten some pretty good music recomendations from this board. :rock

I'll second that. I haven't stopped listening to this record since Sunday night.

And I can't believe my luck: they're playing Malkin Bowl here in Vancouver in Sept!

    Thanks, VC!
