  1. Wow, just back from the best weekend ever!

I loved both Welly and Auckland shows, I especially love the wellington vibe and I was very happy with the set lists even though I didn't get my request, (more like the moon), it seemed like nearly all happy songs, or maybe i was just so super happy to be there :)

(those are my hands and moonstone ring on the youtube clip lol.)

So I got the t-shirt, got the poster, got the setlist from Auckland and was also on their flight from Wellington and they were lovely and awesome enough for me to get this -

    Yay!

Hoping they'll be back next year.

That's such a great photo, everyone looks so happy!

  2. There are many different reasons people go see music and not all of it has to do with a transendental experience (Wilco). It could be that these kids just want to have fun and see someone that their peers relate to. While Justin Beiber may not be your cup of tea, that doesn't mean that he doesn't fill some need with them.

This is from a recent interview with John K Samson:

Do you get dissuaded when you turn on the radio? The fact that the popular culture isn’t all that interested in lyrics, especially?

I suppose. I mean, I don’t get discouraged by it. I think there’s a role for that kind of song and, you know, who am I to make fun of something that actually moves another person. And obviously it does.

I found that response very thoughtful and gracious. And I try to remember it whenever I find myself cringing at certain artists or types of music.

  3. Several years ago I did some volunteer work at one of our hospitals. I showed up for my first shift, a Friday night, and was assigned the "library cart." I was teamed up with another volunteer who happened to be a super energetic university student who was trying to qualify for med school. She was happy and excited about the shift and asked me what I did, or if I was still in school. I told her I worked in the investment industry and that I had been out of school for many years. She asked me what school I attended. I told her McMaster in Ontario and that I had graduated in 1985. She had this big smile on her face and said, "Oh, 1985, that's the year I was born!"

  4. I was listening to Z the other day.. To me, MMJ peaked on that album, and it's been kind of down hill ever since. What a fantastic album...

I'm not as familiar with the MMJ catalogue, but I love At Dawn, and have had a hard time warming up to Circuital.

I really love "At Dawn", too, but "Z" is probably my favourite.

Does anyone have any comments about their recent covers? I thought "Rocket Man" and "It Makes No Difference" on the Red Rocks boots were well done.

  5. Nice thread!

Seattle: King County Stadium; Safeco Field

    Colorado: Coors Field

Atlanta: Fulton County Stadium; Turner Field

    Boston: Fenway Park

Toronto: Exhibition Stadium; SkyDome (now Rogers Centre)

    Oakland: Coliseum

And next month: San Francisco: AT&T Park!

  6. I love both records. My emotional attachment to SBS is stronger, mainly because it was the first "new" Wilco release after I became a fan, and my wife and I were becoming fans together. The bass playing is spectacular on both records -- something that seems to be lacking in the mix on WTA -- even on a song as sub-par as Leave Me Like You Found Me. I love the 1970s classic rock vibe of SBS, and for me it's a nice palate cleanser after digging into "heavier" Wilco records.

That being said, I think TWL is a far stronger record than SBS and with the exception of live recordings, is the finest example of what this lineup can do together.

This is pretty much my story, too. With the exception of the wife part. My husband is less emotionally attached to/reliant upon music than I am. Baseball is another story.

I listen to Wilco shows more often than their records. Interestingly, it's the post-Jay/pre-Pat&Nels shows that I listen to the most. And when I feel like putting on one of their records, it's usually AGIB, my go-to record.

  7.

Then the Autumn D quartet snuck in a brief but fun mini-set of their own with Sarah Lee and Johnny and members of their band sitting in. They did five songs before the bar closed down promptly at 1.

    Here's what they played:

    The Sun In California

The Swallows Of London Town (w/Johnny Irion on tambourine)

Simple Explanation (w/Charlie Rose on pedal steel)

    Feel You Now

    It's Just That Simple

Wow, nice mini-set. Love "Feel You Now"! Thanks, bbop!

  8. I think this counts: I had a dream that I was in a bar somewhere in Toronto. CBC Radio Two happened to be broadcasting live from this bar. The morning show's host (not sure why I was in a bar that early, presumably before work) asked me if there was anything I'd like to hear. I requested "Lost Love." I contemplated asking for "Radio King" but went with "Lost Love." It was great.
