  1. After a week with the album I find that I come back to this song the most. There's just something really moving about this track. And yeah, when it finally breaks at 2:26 its amazing. Almost like a more subdued Muzzle of Bees. I hope they don't shy away from this one during live shows.

    Totally.

Hmm I posted that about Black Moon recently, I'll have to listen to both of them to determine their respective degrees of muzzle-ness.

  2.

I don't remember what it sounds like (haven't listened since the stream) but I remember a tune that reminded me of Candy Floss near the end of the album. I remember liking it a lot.. Maybe it was Standing O.

Capitol City's the one you're thinking of.

Though the middle of the album (Born Alone until Standing O) is noticably weaker, I'm still very relieved to hear the whole record turned out infinitely better than I expected. I never could have dreamed it'd be on par with Sky Blue Sky.

I can guarantee that lot of the tracks that people aren't crazy about right now are huge growers, especially Black Moon. I always thought it sounded sort of like "Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but that might just be me. But this was probably the most forgettable song on the album the first couple of listens through. However, the string arrangement is absolutely gorgeous, and the production on that track is really something special. I think it's sort of funny how it starts off almost sounding like Black Eye too, even if just for a few seconds (starts on the same A minor chord).

I knew I wasn't the only one hearing a hint of a glimpse of Black Eye (the Sunken Treasure version, that is). For me, Black Moon was an instant love but I can see why it wouldn't be for some people. I'm really hoping I can get into Born Alone and Open Your Mind, but I'm not optimistic.

  3. I'm working on an article/blog/whatever about the 2011 resurgence of three of my favorites: tweedy, malkmus & thurston moore.....all three records blew me away, especially after being underwhelmed by all of them for quite a few years....guess i have to give beck some credit too for the latter two's records

  6. I thought the show was a letdown after the 1st episode, but I am so hooked now. The end of the "Golden Crown" episode was HORRIFYING! But he had it coming!! (trying not to spoil for those who have not seen it.

    My thoughts exactly.

  7. 01. IATTBYH

    14. In a Future Age

    15. Someday Some Morning Sometime

  8. At the moment, I think Laura Marling tops my most talented female artists creating today. Slightly more low profile, Emmy The Great really can't do much wrong in my eyes either. If we venture into "of all time" territory, Aimee Mann would take the cake, no doubt about it.

  9. I'm flying solo for the Antwerp gig tomorrow evening, if anyone wants to meet up (or take my spare ticket off my hands), let me know.

Concerning the new album, I was underwhelmed by the lead-off single Down By The Water but luckily it's one of the weaker songs on the album, in the up tempo department it's easily outshined by Rox in the Box.

I definitely think Rise To Me is the highlight of the album, very Hazards of Love that one (my favorite album of theirs). Don't Carry It All reminds me of another Hazards track, namely Wager All. Even the alt-country sounds of All Arise! is carried well by the folk opera folks (I love that minimal banjo).

Too bad they seem to have what I like to call a "Sporting Life" on every album (iow a vastly inferior track), this time it's called Calamity Song. I can only stand by what's been said about the hymns already, the sound of them is a new one for the band and I very much hope the next album will continue in that direction.

I never cease to be amazed by Colin's ability to imprint combinations of words into my brain, whether it's "nape of your neck", "bold and brilliant sun" or "a panoply of song" in the same manner I still remember great opening lines from great novels.

  10. Both Vivadixie and Good Morning Spider are to be re-issued on vinyl later this month. The are coming out on the Plain Record label in 180g versions. Vivadixie comes with a bonus 7" featuring a couple of tracks off the Distorted Ghost EP. Can't wait to get these as the vinyl copies on e-bay currently cost a fortune. :cheers

I'll be looking forward to this, Good Morning Spider has some of my all-time favorite tunes with a prominent mention of sparrows. Picking a favorite with "horse" in the lyrics is a whole other and substantially harder mission :).
