  1. He'd have to go for some more obscure stuff. The Wilco cover of "Thirteen" and Tweedy's solo cover of "Simple Twist of Fate" add absolutely zero to the originals. Covers for the most part are fun live but pointless on record.

I'm inclined to agree, but how much "Be Not So Fearful"s are out there?

  2. That's a good one. Jeff's got the capo way up there...

Good version, I've never heard a disappointing HD version though on gigs I went to (only seen it three times but still). The Jesus, Etc. and When The Roses Bloom Again versions of that set you posted are exquisite as well. He's poored more emotion into other renditions of Jesus, etc., but I like it when he slips into a lower key, reminds me of the vocals in When The Roses Bloom Again (my favorite vocals except for Hell is Chrome and Pieholden Suite)

  3. I'm thinking of giving my mom the gift of christmas spirit, every year I have to convince her to put a tree up after all, it's been postponed as long as the day before christmas eve previous years. It's up now and it's still not decorated, I'd do it but she'd just re-do it so why bother.

I'm always thinking of new ways to disguise a present, I read a lot and give out a lot of books so that's a transparant gift shape-wise. I'm thinking of getting my brother a book that I heard him mention but I'm not 100% he doesn't own it already, and I'm not smart enough to trick him into telling me without him getting suspicious.

  4. I'm missing the immediate connection between reactions to those two songs.

Well You & I has been accused of being too sugary, not complex enough and that's exactly what Big Star's Thirteen is but in a good way. When Jeff's been sweet it's usually with a dark edge (far, far away territory).

After hearing Unlikely Japan a reworking of some of his back catalog could turn out well...

  5. i've never heard jeff do 'pink moon'..that would be interesting

i also love his cover of daniel johnstons 'true love will find you in the end'

Absolutely LOVE that cover. I've never heard some of the covers mentioned in this thread and I've about 40 of them on my hard drive I reckon. You're a fine die-hard crowd.

The most interesting cover he's ever done's gotta be "Crack a smile", there's something about that one. And I'm sure it's got it's detractors on this forum (keeping in mind all the You & I bashing) but his "Thirteen" is almost on par with Elliott's.

Charles Wright and Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band

    Charlie Parker

Harry Nillson about 90% of the time

See, I've a hard time swallowing that you can listen to White Chalk "all of the time". Or Regina Spektor. I like both artists, don't get me wrong.

  7. My hump of hate is usually full but I can't think of any artist I torture myself with by listening to enough of their music to hate them...I mean Coldplay sucks but they're way at the edges of my peripheral artistic vision, if you will.

There are artists that began to suck after a couple of excellent releases, for instance U2 and Kings of Leon, stadium rock is a waste of life.

  8. 1. The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt

    2. The National - High Violet

    3. Beach House - Teen Dream

    4. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

    5. Local Natives - Gorilla Manor

    6. Laura Veirs - July Flame

    7. Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can

    8. Johnny Flynn - Been Listening

    9. The New Pornographers - Together

    10. First Aid Kit - The Big Black And The Blue

I've been editing and re-editing this list since September and there are about twenty more records I've loved this year that were at one point in this top 10. Best to keep it concise though.

  9. The bird posters are awesome. But Tarrytown got a real treat. It's a tribute to Capt. Sully's Miracle on the Hudson, a huge guitar floating on the icy Hudson River with little people sliding down a ramp and holding onto lifejackets in the water. Very cool.

    Can you post that one?

P.S OP is this also yours?

  10. Different strokes.....

Since that boot is still for sale through the 10c, I would just say that version. Official Flac sound board matrix.

    hmm ranking

tough to rank the first three but

    faithful

    red mosquito

    smile

    fixer

    light years

    Pretty similar order,

    Smile

    Faithful

    Red Mosquito

    Light Years

    Fixer

  11. Its funny because I love Johnny Guitar-except for that annoying fade out-and dislike gone and inside job as well as come back and big wave-but I like the rest of that record.

And if anyone wants to hear what I think is one of the best recent PJ shows I suggest the Philly Spectrum show from 10/30/09.

    Main Set:

Gonna See My Friend, The Fixer, In My Tree, Given To Fly, Tremor Christ, Untitled, MFC, Hold On, Unthought Known, In Hiding, Deep, Habit, Cropduster, Off He Goes, Force of Nature, Present Tense, Got Some, Do The Evolution

    Encore 1:

Just Breathe, Parting Ways, Jeremy, Breath, Light Years, Rearviewmirror

    Encore 2:

Whipping, Crazy Mary, Footsteps, Once, Alive, Sonic Reducer, Baba O'Riley

Just a killer setlist. Even the cropduster was good that night. Probably the second best PJ show Ive ever seen.

Thanks for the bootleg tip, the ones I named weren't actually so recent. Did your recommendations have soundboard quality as well as killer versions or one or the other?

Wow, I couldn't disagree with you more about the tracks on the latest two albums, just to test out how opposite we actually are (well how opposite one can possibly be as big fans): rank these from favorite to least favorite

    Smile

    Faithful

    The Fixer

    Light Years

    Red Mosquito

This is easy as pecan pie for me so I'm curious about your answer.

  12. I give a no-suck guarantee. I foresee Wilco really stepping it up and creating a very challenging record ....or a country record à la Anodyne. Either way, it'll be awesome.

What's with the hate-on for AGIB? I really love that record. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot will always be #1 for me, but Being There, Summerteeth, and A Ghost Is Born are in a delicious 3-way tie for second.

If they move away from the previous two albums, I'd far likely be more towards the guitar-rock/krautrock direction than alt-country in my estimation. But in the spirit of wishful thinking, alt-country is absolutely my favorite road to take for them. Oh, and to answer the OP's question, about 15%.

  13. The lower the expectation bar is set, the less chance there is of being disappointed. Set it low enough, and you might actually be pleasantly surprised when said record comes out.

I've unraveled the conspiracy then, Wilco actually recorded two albums in the aftermath of SBS and decided to release the less impressive one first, it's diabolical genius. It's more plausible than Wilco releasing a hit and miss record without ulterior motive.

    Bwa ha ha ha ha!

    nniafr5jo1njf8b18qp.jpg

Strangely, most folks I try to turn on to Wilco by ways of the new album pick "You and I" as an early favorite. I still don't hate it, no matter how much peer pressure on this forum. Oh and I don't love the album version of Spiders either. Lucky you guys don't know where I live...

Of course I've since learned ST is always the way to go for virgins.

  14. Love to read the comments.

For me, its the entire catalog of songs from Ten to Binaural that amazes me. That was quite a run of excellent records. I also think Binaural is underrated. Terrific record from start to finish.

I do not listen Ten, Vs. or Vitalogy very much anymore. I have come to prefer more recent live versions of those songs. The Lukin/Not For You/Blood sandwich for example.

I still listen to No code, Yield and Binaural on a regular basis though.

Riot Act has four good songs-definitely the weakest IMHO.

Pear Jam (self-titled)was a good record, but there are a few songs I skip when I spin it.

Backspacer has really grown on me over time, even though I hate the production. Supersonic is the only song I skip when I spin that record.

Cant wait to see whats up next!

Johnny Guitar is the weakest BSP track by far, followed by Supersonic, but I love the new record way more than 2006's. Except for Johnny Guitar there are no skipable tracks like i.e. Marker In The Sand, WWS, Parachutes, Army Reserve or Big Wave (the last which feels like a retroactive BSP b-side). Well that's half the album named right there. I do enjoy the hell out of Severed Hand, Gone and especially Inside Job (the last feels very Binaural).

In fact, Backspacer is my 2nd favorite PJ album right this moment but that's a very fluid ranking (aka what records I've played most recently). The triple threat Just Breathe-ATW-Unthought Known is the most powerful one since Footsteps-Wash-Dead Man.

On another topic: those who don't have them should search out the 2000 live demos for a killer Rearviewmirror, and the 2006 Belgium bootleg for a crazy "Crazy Mary".

  15. I never did understand why people placed Vs. in their top 3: it always sounded like a mediocre alternative rock record.

If any record is overrated, it's Vitalogy, not VS. And is it considered cool in this thread to act like Ten isn't a brilliant record ;-)?

I don't know why I get drawn into these (albeit good-humored) discussions. I like all their albums. Well, except for the bulk of riot act, obviously.

I've been obsessing over No Code lately, so this Yield topic is about 12months past due for me. I'll swing back around to obsessing about that one in a while I'm sure, so no worries.

On a completely unrelated note, does anyone care to share their thoughts on Vedder's take on Reign 'O er me?
