  1. They had me at Wilco x2 and Tweedy, so the rest is gravy..

Me too. And Autumn Defense, of course. In fact, I like the idea of not feeling too much pressure to see everything-- more time to take in the exhibits, which I never seem to spend enough time on. Like bböp, I do have a vague sense of something missing. My friend is hugely excited about Real Estate, which I find to be pleasant background, with sort of Byrds-y sounding guitar but not enough hook for me after a few listens. But I'm sure I'll love it all and maybe find a new favorite.

  2. U2 concert, in 1985 or '86, and they closed the show with "Bad" from Wide Awake in America. The last few minutes of the song, Bono was singing "Come on down" over and over and gesturing to the audience to move forward. I remember feeling a magnetic pull as we left our seats and made our way hypnotically towards the stage, everyone singing. Somehow chaos was avoided and we all got as far down by the stage as the crowd would allow. It was dreamlike and magical, and went on for several minutes. When the stage lights came up, the spell was broken. I'll never forget that!

  3. Trying to stay warm in my freezing drafty cracker house so I was baking and listening to a Sonics record. The song "Santa Claus" was playing and I noticed there are 8 "nothings" in it. Lyrics below. Not too difficult to imagine this song may have drifted past JT at some point and planted a seed.

Yeah Santa Claus Where have you been? I've been waiting here Just to let you in Yeah Santa Claus What you got on your back? Is there something for me inside that sack?

I want a brand new car

    A twangy guitar

    A cute little honey

    And lots of money

    Santa Claus

    Won't you tell me please?

What you gonna put under my Christmas tree?

    And he just said

    Nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin'

    Nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin'

    Yeah Santa Claus

I've been waitin' oh so long

Now don't you, don't you do me wrong

I want a brand new car A twangy guitar A cute little honey And lots of money Santa Claus Oh won't you tell me please? What you gonna put under my Christmas tree?

And he just said Nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' Nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin'

Oh no Oh no no no Nothin' for Christmas No Oh no I got nothin' for Christmas No no Oh no I get nothin' at Christmas time

  4. It's not the lyrics to that "What's Going On" song, it's the way it's sung. That makes it one of the most unbearable tune ever in my head.

For a few minutes I thought you were talking about the Marvin Gaye song and I couldn't comprehend how the delivery could do anything other than delight and mesmerize. But it's that HORRIBLE early 90s song that goes "heyyyy what's going on."

Wouldn't be surprised if that song, played over and over, is successfully used by torturers to get people to talk.

  5. Sounds terrific! If there were leftovers, did the mashed avocado in the dressing turn a gross color? Or did the orange juice and vinegar keep it green?

I made a slaw this weekend, too. Savoy cabbage, Apple, tangerine juice, evoo, and chopped candied pecans. Went great as a side to the chili and cheese grits that was my main.

  6. Check the AMC website. It looks like they are at least streaming the first two episodes for about 30 days. Not sure if that will be true for all of them...

Just checked the site, but you have to be a cable subscriber to stream the full episodes. I'm sure the shows will be worth the $1.99 Amazon charges per episode.

  7. sure...this is off memory:

preheat oven w/ roasting pan in it at 450F

take a half-stick of butter and leave it out so it softens. chop a few cloves of garlic, zest of one lemon, chopped thyme and rosemary. take a half dozen slices of prosciutto and tear into pieces. combine all that mess in a bowl.

take yr chicken, take out all that nasty shit they stuff inside of it, rinse it and pat dry.  salt and pepper the exterior.

carefully separate the skin from the breast, and work your way down into the legs too. take your prosciutto/butter/deliciousness combo and jam gobs of into the bird, under the skin you just separated. all over. take the rest and spread over the skin. quarter your zested lemon and ram it to the cavity, along w/ some more garlic. you can tie the legs together w/ twine if you want to, but if you don't it's not a big deal either.

take the roasting pan out, and plop the bird breast side down on to the hot pan. it'll make a cool sound, but don't burn your wrists on the edges of the pan or you'll make a sound too.

let cook for ~20 min, then reduce to 350F, take the bird out and carefully pry it off the pan so the skin doesn't split, and flip to its back. cook until done (use a meat thermo because i have no idea how big a chicken you are using).

one thing you can do is to put chopped root veggies (potatoes, onions, carrots, etc) into the pan when you take out the bird to flip it, and put the bird on top of them.  when the chicken's done, set aside to rest, put the veggies in a bowl, and make a gravy w/ white wine and a flour or cornstarch and cold water mix, along w/ the pan drippings.

I'll remember to look here for next time-- thanks! I ended up brining the bird with lemon, garlic and bay leaves, then roasting it according to Thomas Keller's easy method. It was moist, tender and delicious. Served with roasted carrots with onions and thyme. Just the thing for a chilly Florida evening!
  8. I just booked a room at the Bennington Motor Inn through Priceline for $120/night. It's free to cancel until June 21, and we don't pay until we get there. I'm hoping we can find something closer and a little nicer, but I wanted to get something booked before the lineup is announced. I think there might be a room or two left.

I stayed there the first SSF-- it ain't fancy, but that's a great price! Paying nearly twice that for a similar small no-frills motel in Williamstown. And have to pay in advance. So it's a great deal if you don't mind the drive!
  9. Hmmm, this is interesting. I must admit MMJ does little/nothing for me, although Jim James is entertaining to watch. Not too psyched about the possibility of having them at SS. I guess it'd be okay as long as they don't take any valuable stage time away from the Wilco/Tweedy saturation I'm hoping for.

  10. Aha, my bad. I saw Bruce Cockburn at Ponte Vedra. The Wilco show was St. Augustine. I'm not up that way too often, as it's about a 3-4 hour trek.

    Just in case you're interested....

A few years back, a guy named Ryan Dettra ran a club here and brought some terrific smaller acts to St. Augustine (Ted Leo, Portastatic, the Thermals were some highlights for me) and then he worked for the County and brought great bigger acts to the Amphitheatre (including Wilco in 2012). As it turns out, he wasn't cut out for the stifling bureaucracy of county government. So now he and some others run the St. Augustine Distillery, making artisanal booze -- this may make your list of things to do in St. Augustine!

    Cheers!

  11. I don't give a fig what the critics think of this record; nor do I see any reason to try to rank it with Wilco albums. It's a collection of many astonishingly good songs, penned and sung as an intimate paean to Jeff's wife/ Spencer's mom. The songs are even better experienced live.

  12. I'm on their email list, since I went to the 2012 Wilco show there, and it actually looks like they have some good acts lined up for 2015: Lucinda Williams, Iris DeMent, Al DiMeola, Neutral Milk Hotel (already sold out)...not just classic rock acts by a long shot.

All these shows are at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. A converted church, about 30 mins north of St. Aug.

A few years back, there were lots of great shows at the Amphitheatre: the Decemberists, Vampire Weekend, Flaming Lips. The guy that booked these shows no longer works for the venue.
