  1. I've been out of the loop for a while. Has anyone heard any of the new material from the upcoming album? I'm really excited. Tweedy is still funny: "It's obnoxious," Tweedy jokes. Lady Gaga's "Judas" obnoxious? "Well, it doesn't sound like Lady Gaga but it's our way of being obnoxious."

  2. And I lurve you guys like you can't imagine!!!

    What a week this has been...my dad collapsed a week ago, and in that time has basically died 4 different times and been revived...now he's out of the ICU and doing better, and has a new, better pacemaker. Driving up to see him yesterday, my son Brennan and I came upon a horrible freeway accident that had just happened seconds before, and stopped to help. There were small children and Brennan helped get them safely out of harm's way, and gave the woman driver his cell phone to call her husband (911 had been called by another driver who stopped). Unfortunately the woman's brother had been thrown from the car and was beneath the vehicle, already dead. There was nothing to do for him but say a prayer. We waited until the emergency vehicles arrived and then got out of their way. So heartbreaking, but at least the 4 small children were unharmed. I can't get the images out of my head but I think the brother died very, very quickly. A nurse who also stopped said his neck had been broken. It had to be quick. :no

    And in the midst of all this, my birthday, which I hardly had time for. But my oldest son Tom insisted on taking me out to a local Indian gaming casino (Pechanga), because I'd never been. We played mostly penny slots so we'd lose our money slower :lol and at one point I lined up 5 7's in a row!!! Pretty cool, I think that netted me all of about $2.50. I also accidentally won $12.63 when I apparently brushed the "Maximum bid" button on my way to push the daub button. Clearly, I am a skilled gambler. :stunned We had such fun!

    But wow, am I ever sleep-deprived and tired of the emotional roller-coaster this week has been. Dad is steadily improving, and that's all I want. That, and good friends like all of you.

    Oh, and we discovered an original section of "The Mother Road", Route 66, on the way up to Dad's hospital. This short stretch up in the Cajon Pass is no longer used and is slowly returning to nature, but it is marked with the cool Rt. 66 emblem. I'll post a photo or two when life calms down again. We gathered a few chunks of asphalt crumbling off the edges of this abandoned roadway, we couldn't resist. It's Route 66!!! I'll have to find a nice flowerpot or something to tuck them into. About 56 years ago, my mom & dad drove Rt. 66 from Minnesota to California with my 4 older siblings, and I was born a year later, their first California baby.

    I can tell I'm still running on pure adrenaline, can you? Haha. G'night.

    I haven't logged in for a while here but I saw that it was your birthday. Happy Birthday. Folks, I know that you all know this already but Donna is a really kind person. When my 1st babies where born 7 and 1/2 years ago, Donna sent my twins some bibs and assorted baby goodies. That was really nice and I'll never forget that. I hope you have a great birthday Donna! -- Jeremy

  3. Funny topic. I asked Tweedy about his shoes ages ago. I forget what the answer was but he said he bought them in Ireland or something like that. Maybe during the MA recordings. At one point I posted in a topic about his shoes with the answer... At least about the ones he wore during the Summerteeth days.

  4. Aww. One of the best of the best.

    Yeah. The Guru was great. I really enjoyed Gang Starr back in the early nineties. If you're ever looking for a good rap album and haven't got "Step In The Arena" -- get it.

  5. Yeah. This one's from my sister's husband (or maybe her, they share the account):

    WE WON!!!!!!!!!! Great job everyone on helping with the campaign. Massachusetts is definitely ready for a change. True change will be coming shortly. Hold tight for the "Miracle of Massachusetts" will be set in motion very shortly.

    I don't know what's more pathetic A or B:

    A: "You got that ball, now keep that ball and go go....GO SCOTT BROWN"

    OR

    B: did chicken in the crock pot today and had an awesome burrito dinner. Love planning ahead!

    RNC members draft new 'socialist' resolution

    Washington (CNN) - Conservative members of the Republican National Committee are circulating a new resolution that calls on party members to stand up to President Obama's "socialist" agenda and would prohibit RNC funds from going to GOP candidates who disagree with elements of a proposed ten plank ideological platform.

    The language of the proposal is still being tweaked ahead of January's RNC Winter Meeting in Hawaii, where it could be submitted for a vote before the full committee.

    Jim Bopp, Jr., an RNC committee member from Indiana and the chief sponsor of the resolution, said the goal of the resolution is to "re-establish the party's conservative bona fides."

    "This would establish standards for candidates and hold them accountable to RNC's conservative platform," he told CNN. "We are open to diverse views, but you do have to agree with us most of the time."

    Bopp said such standards would insulate RNC chairman Michael Steele from the kind of conservative criticism he faced last month for supporting a moderate Republican, Dede Scozzafava, in the special election in New York's 23rd congressional district.

    "I think he has been unjustly criticized for supporting the Republican candidate in New York," Bopp said of Steele, whom he opposed during the chairman's race last Winter. "This resolution will establish standards so that he wont won't feel obligated to support every Republican and not feel criticized."

    RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho had no comment on the resolution.

    "The deadline for submitting Resolutions for the RNC Winter Meeting is more than 30 days away," Gitcho said in an e-mail.

    "At this point, we do not what resolutions will be submitted nor what the final language of any resolution ultimately submitted may be."

    If approved in its current form, the resolution would be the second RNC document this year to formally accuse the Obama administration of pushing socialist policies. The committee approved a resolution in May calling on Democrats to "stop pushing our country toward socialism."

    Full text of the resolution after the jump:

    Proposed RNC Resolution on Reagan's Unity Principle for Support of CandidatesWHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan believed that the Republican Party should support and espouse conservative principles and public policies; and

    WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan also believed the Republican Party should welcome those with diverse views; and

    WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan believed, as a result, that someone who agreed with him 8 out of 10 times was his friend, not his opponent; and

    WHEREAS, Republican faithfulness to its conservative principles and public policies and Republican solidarity in opposition to Obama's socialist agenda is necessary to preserve the security of our country, our economic and political freedoms, and our way of life; and

    WHEREAS, Republican faithfulness to its conservative principles and public policies is necessary to restore the trust of the American people in the Republican Party and to lead to Republican electoral victories; and

    WHEREAS, the Republican National Committee shares President Ronald Reagan's belief that the Republican Party should espouse conservative principles and public policies and welcome persons of diverse views; and

    WHEREAS, the Republican National Committee desires to implement President Reagan's Unity Principle for Support of Candidates; and

    WHEREAS, in addition to supporting candidates, the Republican National Committee provides financial support for Republican state and local parties for party building and federal election activities, which benefits all candidates and is not affected by this resolution; and

    THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Republican National Committee identifies ten (10) key public policy positions for the 2010 election cycle, which the Republican National Committee expects its public officials and candidates to support:

    (1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama's "stimulus" bill;

    (2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare;

    (3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;

    (4) We support workers' right to secret ballot by opposing card check;

    (5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;

    (6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;

    (7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat;

    (8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;

    (9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing, denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and

    (10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership; and be further

    RESOLVED, that a candidate who disagrees with three or more of the above stated public policy positions of the Republican National Committee, as identified by the voting record, public statements and/or signed questionnaire of the candidate, shall not be eligible for financial support and endorsement by the Republican National Committee; and be further

    RESOLVED, that upon the approval of this resolution the Republican National Committee shall deliver a copy of this resolution to each of Republican members of Congress, all Republican candidates for Congress, as they become known, and to each Republican state and territorial party office.

  7. Bart, all of what you think you saw and/or heard about actually happened.

    This is not a dream. (cue Twilight Zone music).

    Yes, to answer your question simply and quickly Bono threw in (snippeted) a few lines of Far, Far Away as the intro to Beautiful Day.

    He did this at both Chicago shows and changed the lyrics around in Foxboro to reflect the T instead of the CTA.

    U2 Gigs Far, Far Away

    I emailed Greg Kot to see if he noticed it since I saw his review online and he didn't mention it. I figured it was a long shot.

    But he responded. (Edit: For those that may not know or remember Bono got pissed at what Kot wrote after their Vertigo tour in Chicago in 2005. So he demanded to sit down with him and talk it out. Obviously, Kot has a history with WIlco. ;) )

    "yes, heard that at Saturday's show and thought it was cool --- and unusually subtle by U2 standards!

    and thanks for that link. much appreciated.

    gk"

    Since this may be your lucky day, I happen to have a recording of this that I will post for you. :thumbup

    Far, Far Away chicago 9/12/09

    Cool thanks. That clip kind of makes me like U2 again. :)

  8. What's to be gained by having Rita get it on with the neighbor?

    The writers evidently don't realize how much we already hate her.

    That's the hallmark of good writing... You're supposed to hate her. Isn't it amazing that we can buy into a story so much as to despise a good person because they stand in the way of our protagonist who is a complete psycho?

    I think they might be doing it because they want to set Dexter up for another murder of an "innocent."

  9. I won this one year. There was a new Chik-Fil-A opening in my old neighborhood and at that time i was getting into work really early so I was driving by and they had signs and stuff for the grand opening. I walked in but I was not within the first 100 people. They gave me a raffle ticket though and told me they were going to have drawings for free sandwiches and stuff. I couldn't believe it. They called my number and I won lunch for a year. They gave me 52 coupons for free combo meals.

    Needless to say it was the greatest year of my life. My kids loved it, and of course I was very popular with my buddies as I would take them there for lunch every once a week. It was great.

  10. I would say Scully is good but I prefer announcers who are more technical about the game. I enjoy listening to Jim Palmer here in Baltimore because he tells it like it is.

    Also, since we have some announcer connoisseurs here... Does Bob Costas wear a toupee?

  11. Anton was my initial thought too, but hope that it won't be the case as it's so out of character; he's a nice guy!

    I wonder. If Anton is such a nice guy, how did he get wrapped up in becoming an informant? We know Quinn is a dirty cop as Dexter called him but Anton was probably in with a bad crowd. Casual weed smokers don't hang around with criminals and drug dealers.

  12. After thoroughly enjoying the show Friday night in Dallas, I'm not sure what all the hand-wringing is all about. After having seen Impossible Germany and Hate it Here countless times before, the treatment and playing on these two songs were more intense and better than anything I had previously heard from them.

    I guess it boils down to opinions again. What is better? For you it is probably different than mine. I'm not saying this is what you are saying, but if sounding more like the record is better than that's not why I even go to concerts. I go to concerts to see how a musician treats particular songs over time. Wilco seems to have abandoned all willingness to jack with a song a little bit to see how it turns out.
