  1. Nonetheless, this is a moment which allows the president's detractors to allege waning prestige on the part of his presidency. And it will raise questions about the political advice that he is receiving."

Totally. Obama needs easy layups right now, not political failures. Is Obama already at risk of being labeled a lame duck?

  2. :yes

Really digging the Dirty Projectors Britte Orca too, but I just got around to it only last week.

Can you still buy Useless Creatures by itself?

By the way, MWard's Hold Time is an A in my book.

  3. :stunned EB? Never!!!! Wasnt me.

Ok, back to that good good Dexter talk....

I love Dexter. I started watching it onDemand this summer. I watched all 3 seasons in about 3 weeks. Lost a lot of sleep but love the show.

  4. This album lacks a very urgent sense of curiosity......there is nothing for me to go back to and WANT to explore it further.....that is my feeling right now.......

And such talented musicians (Kotche,Cline and Stirrat) used to virtually zero effect......what a waste.

    -Robert

I think Stirrat gives the album any soul that it might elude to. Kotche does what good drummers should, provide percussion without getting in the way. Cline, well you can take him or ... take him.

EDIT: By the way I really like the album. I didn't expect to like it at all given SBS and Cline. It was a pleasant surprise. I personally only "identify" with Solitaire.

  5. I think people viewed Lennon as the more cool/cosmic Beatle. But to me there's no doubt that McCartney did a lot more than just help on other people's songs. From what I've read, McCartney was basically pulling the whole cart around the time of Abbey Road. And I think it's pretty obvious the Beatles was his band at that point.

p.s. I've always like McCartney's voice over just about any other musician. It's all subjective.

  6. Anyhow, I don't even know how to respond to that article. For the record, I'm not against "It" but I'm not sure how well doing "It" translates into providing a quality environment for my children to grow up in. If I understand the meaning for revenge breeding, I don't think that the symptoms the author lists are in fact revenge breeding: charter schools, urban gentrification and Wilco merch for kids. It think the first two may be more indicative of parents trying to provide a homegenous neighborly and educational environment. -- Not to out-pro-create "undesirables."

As for Wilco merch, I would suspect that there is a very common thread in WilcoFandom; Wilco fans' parents were probably very influential in shaping their child's love of an eclectic/diverse music. -- Wilco fans want to be just as influential as their parents were in their own kids' musical experiences.

All I know is that Wilco should open up for Third Eye Blind. :stunned

  7. Now we're actually complaining about the "shushers?" Fans at Wilco shows are probably the whiniest of all concert goers. You just can't ever get it right. Next people will be complaining about people who smile.

    A couple of observations:

I'm about 6'1" and there's always some girl at a Wilco show who will actually interrupt me to ask if I will move for them, so they can see. I just let them and their dorky boyfriend move in front of me. It's not a big deal.

I also notice when I go to Wilco shows that the overall population is shorter than I would think the average American is. They also seem to be more likely to wear glasses too. It's uncanny.

Wilco fans need to relax a little and stop acting like Ferris Bueller's sister Jeanie and start acting more like his girlfriend Sloan.

  8. I was worried that their decline was in full steam because of SBS but I happen to love their new album. It is kind of a hard thing to realize that your favorite band for years is not your favorite anymore... But that's part of life. And that's ok.

I do agree with your comments about their live shows. I haven't been to one in a while. Ever since Nels came on board I feel like their setlist rarely varies and that I'm watching a franchise and not the band I loved years ago.

Let's face it, unless Wilco is the exception to the rule, but most bands or even scientists like Einstein have that magical 7-10 year zone of brilliance. My only hope is that if they ever feel that what they are doing is not exciting, they should step away. But then again, I'm not one to ask someone to put down a multi-million dollar franchise either.
