  1. It seems like much of this debate is centered around the cost of health care which is really only one aspect of the issue. Cost is obviously tied to quality or at least should be a factor... Why is health care so expensive in America? Probably because of the amount of research that is done here.

Does anyone have any opinions or visions of what might happen to research/innovation in worldwide health if America, the world's largest contributor to health care informatics, R&D, etc. decides to make health care a government responsibility? Without true free enterprise, and the government's insistence on going with the lowest bidder, will the incentive for innovation fade? Just wondering what people think...

Also, getting back to cost and quality, it seems like everyone has a Utopian view of health care. Is affordable and quality health care just another rendition of the 1950's fairy tales like GM and paid pensions for life? Are we kidding ourselves? Don't people in countries with National Health care like Australia also go out an buy additional insurance anyway? Maybe we should face the reality that seems pretty evident to me after 911... That there are no guarantees in life.

Maybe I'm just feeling a little cynical today.

  2. I've thought that perhaps the references to blood and other murderous things could be viewed metaphorically -- perhaps it's just representative of any guilty act that "can't be undone" (infidelity for instance). It strikes me that the song is about guilt and the panic of confronting it and thus the whole "body in the trunk" theme could be a way of examining that, and the phone call could be an attempt to assuage that guilt or confess to the underlying act . . . or it could just be a murder ballad psycho freak-out -- the bastard child of "Via Chicago" and "Spiders."

Do you mean this is Tweedy's "This Bird Has Flown?"

Also, I haven't posted in the a while. Is this really the intended look of the forum or is this the result of a server crash around the time of Jay's death that has not been rectified?

  3. One of my fondest memories of Jay was standing in the middle of the road in Arlington, VA at 1am in front of the IOTA club singing one of his songs through a traffic cone into a microphone with him. That was pretty cool. Great musician.

  4. Pleasure:

I'm just so happy/pleasantly surprised about this album. I completely didn't expect it to be this good. To use John's quote about SBS, I'm over the moon about this album.

Bull Black Nova's riff at :55 and 1:37, etc... The one that makes you pledge allegiance to Tweedy's Wilco.

Bull Black Nova's "I'm sorry as a setting sun, this can't be undone."

Solitaire - Just a great song.

Disappointments - Bull Black Nova could have been like 11 minutes - a la Marquee Moon.

  5. I gotta say something here and, Pillowy Star please don't take this personally because it's not directed at you per say, but I hear this so much and it bugs me!

There are a lot of shows out there that I don't like and feel like I would generally be loosing brain cells if I watched it, but I don't chime in to appreciation threads and say how bad it is! I just don't watch it!

I understand if you have some investment into the show and it takes a turn that you don't like but, really? Just stop watching!

P.S. please don't hate on me! I'm not coming at you, it's everyone, everywhere that feels the need to state how stupid the writers are and how far-fetched it all is...

    Sorry, rant over. :cheers

The other thing is that people tend to think the writers use time travel as a crutch that they never originally intended to. I don't believe this.

And yes, it's far fetched. That's because real life isn't really as interesting as Lost is. Imagine if Lost was based in any kind of reality.. It would have been cancelled before the pilot ever aired.

  6. my friend called me up while he was at the phillies game on friday to tell me that jamie moyer walks out to some wilco song. so when he got back i went through all the songs that i thought it could have been, and he recognized "i got you."

needless to say, jamie moyer is my new favorite philly.

i have suspicions he walks out to wilco because he is secretly john stirratt (and also, the dad from "boy meets world.")

Jamie Moyer is a pretty amazing pitcher. He's a lefty without a great fastball but he throws strikes and always seems to be a solid contributor. I *think* he even may be the oldest if not one of the oldest pitchers in the league.

  7. It is very typical of Jay and or Fast Atmosphere. No announcement of any kind made on the board of what is happening. It is just gone. Yesterday we were posting away, today, poof! You are sent to register.com. Apparently the domain name rights lapsed. You can buy jayfarrar.net for $59.99. Ha ha!

This is not the first time this has happened to his site.
