  1. We all feel old at some point in time. First time I felt old was in 2010 when I saw secondary and high school photographs that my older brother posted on his Facebook.

Then I feel old when I can't connect with the newer bands Gotye, etcetera, and then no one listens to R.E.M. anymore, or everybody has but forgotten the beautiful albums of 1996-8, and then Gotye keeps sounding like the Police that makes me feel old.

  2. Tim Berne on how he met Nels Cline in the 70s:

How did you meet Nels originally in the '70s?

I was going out there to make records in L.A. and I knew his brother, Alex. His brother was a drummer. I met his brother through Julius. He was playing in Julius's trio. I met Alex when he was like 21. Nels is really good at production so he would always help out. We did these five-hour recording sessions in a big room and Nels was always there to kinda make sure it sounded good. He's really good at that.

We hadn't played for a long time but then we started playing doing little gig here and there when he was in New York and then this thing came up a couple years ago with Jim. We would do it more if he wasn't doing Wilco. These last two gigs [in Austria], I think, were probably our best.

Official Led Zeppelin Facebook page posts cryptic image, leaves fans guessing

    SEPTEMBER 8, 2012BY: BRIGETTE SULLIVAN

    examiner.com

Today, the official Led Zeppelin page on Facebook has posted a cryptic image, leaving fans, critics, and music enthusiasts the world over wondering what it means. The simple "Five" written in the same font as the band's "Houses of the Holy" album cover could mean anything.

As fans of Led Zeppelin know, their first four albums were simply titled "Led Zeppelin One", "Led Zeppelin Two", "Led Zeppelin Three" and "Led Zeppelin Four", although written in Roman numerals. Will they actually record new music for "Led Zeppelin Five"? However, the was already a fifth album: "Houses of the Holy".

Will they be releasing a compilation album of unreleased tracks? Perhaps there's a DVD of concert footage (perhaps of their O2 Arena reunion concert) or a documentary in the works in time for holiday shopping? Will they go on tour, as so many "we'll never tour together again" bands have acquiesced to for large paychecks?

  4. According to google trends, the number one language employed by users, while searching for wilco content is not English, it's Dutch.

The number one city where wilco searches originate is Portland, Oregon, followed by Amsterdam in The Netherlands and Chicago is third.

The country with the most wilco related searches is not the United States, but The Netherlands.

Below are some graphics from google trends, the first shows a list of languages and the second shows the geographical distribution of users, by country and by city, all of this in the past 30 days.

As I tried to come up with explanations for the predominance of Dutch in these searches I found that Wilco is actually a name, in Dutch, which may explain most, but not all of those Netherlands searches.

  5. I have been "overexposed" to the song "Live and Die" - it's on every radio station I listen, morning and night, that I'm already tired of it.

Can anybody recommend any really good songs of the Avett Brothers so that I don't lose complete faith in them?

  6. Can't identify with that list, I don't think I own 4-5 of those albums listed, plus there's no R.E.M. to be seen anywhere! Going by this list I'm listening to the wrong stuff! (or I'm not part of The People) :)

  7. :lol

I heard a piece on Public Radio last night about Pussy Riot. (Of course it was Public Radio!) And it was pretty damn interesting. "Pussy Riot" isn't just the name of the band, but it's the name of an entire female/feminist protest movement in Russia that is opposed to the Putin regime; it's more than just those three women who are in jail. It's a whole grassroots thing.

Here is a link to an interview with another couple of members of the movement.

    Great stuff, as always.

    Thanks

  8. It's a great place to discover new music. I especially find the "similar artists" section very helpful. For instance, for R.E.M. it lists: The Minus 5, Wilco, Counting Crows, 10.000 maniacs and many more. I'm not a paying member, however.

It's one of the first places I visit (other than wikipedia) where I learn about artists.

  9. An interview with Sarah Lee Guthrie on washingtonexaminer.com

"I grew up loving rock 'n' roll, and then Wilco and Billy [bragg's collaboration] brought more of the traditional in," said Sarah Guthrie, who is currently recording an album with her husband, Johnny Irion, that will be produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. "It gave me a whole new appreciation of Woody's music."

There was also a recent Q&A with Ms. Guthrie, here: http://www.ourstage....e-family-legacy the album is to release in 2013.
