  1. id be very surprised if this ends up being true. loria's a lot of things but hes not dumb. stanton might be the one marquee attraction left but he certainly wont be re-signing with the marlins and his trade stock, already sky high, will only improve as time goes on. he'll get out sooner than 3 years. ticket sales are gonna suck even with stanton and loria has to know that he has the biggest trade bounty in the game at his disposal. no way will he let him get away with nothing in return

which is good cuz hes an absolute monster talent and deserves to play for a real team.

    Sigh, you're probably right.

They could probably get a huge haul from the Rangers if they called tomorrow.

Would rather see them reinvest at least some of the money they offloaded this offseason on a Stanton contract, though.

  2. One time, the team told him he needed to cut his dreadlocks for a new team policy. He shouted "Fucking trade me" in the locker room in front of reporters.

Then he cut his dreads, didn't say anything more of it, hit .332/.386/.562 with 29 home runs and 51 stolen bases.

I'm not worried about this at all.

  3. The Zambrano and Soriano contracts are a lot bigger and longer than the Marlins' ones.

Plus the Cubs don't really need to make moved like those to get fans to show up. The Marlins are kind of uniquely positioned to have every free agency dollar mean more right now, because it potentially means that much more interest in the club in a town that has a notoriously short attention span.

  4. (accidentally deleted this)

They extended Hanley a full two and a half years prior to the incident you are talking about, and had been involved in negotiations with Johnson on an extension for at least two months prior to it.

    So, no, you're wrong.

    -----

It's a little bit odd, however they will have, for the first time since Wayne Huizenga sold the team, stadium revenue to put towards a team. In the old park, the received revenues from tickets sold and that's all. Now, they get parking, concessions, and whatever else is involved.

So, no, it's nor particularly troubling. It makes perfect sense, if you view it as a one-time gamble that they can make Miami into a real baseball town. they have a lot of cost-controlled, young talent to supplement these big contracts, and are gambling that they can put together a winner and see if Miami will support it.

So, when viewed from that angle, it makes perfect sense. They're pushing their chips all in for one opportunity to see if the market will sustain a consistent big spending MLB franchise.

  5. I thought there was a limit of 3 Type A free agent signings per team per season. Did that change?

I don't think there's a limit on how many you can sign. I think that limit is related to draft compensation for the FAs original team.

As for where the money is coming from, they haven't spent anything in recent years, and they're banking on competing immediately and putting the Dolphins permanently in third place in Miami's wallets. It's a big gamble, but they saw what a big splash did for the Heat .

  6. The big wedding is overrated. My extended family has never had the means to travel much. I think each of my uncles and aunts had come to florida to visit once during my life. Money's always been tight. We did a hybrid thing; it was relatively quickly planned, but it wasn't quite eloping. We had about 50 people there, mostly close family and friends, which I prefered to the big blow out.

And if anyone tries to tell you you're too young, just show them this picture:

  7. I don't mind those Miami designs at all. It's fucking south Florida, people.

Yep. They could have been a lot worse.

The logo, in particular makes me think of a very specific place that I drove past every day for 10 months on my way to work. I like it a lot.

  8.

That he is playing well in his mid-30s is to be praised, but it is in fact inconsequential to whether or not he is the most valuable player in the league.

As is the fact that his team won an additional 7 games following the end of the regular season.

  9. Was Young more valuable to the AL Champion Rangers that Migule Cabrerra was to the Tigers? Alex Avilla? They both finished higher.

I'm not saying that Young should have won, I'm saying that his day to day presence, his leadership, his versatility and his ability to fill several distinct roles in the field and the lineup rated better than an 8th place finish.

    That's all.

I think you overrate all that stuff, because he was still not one of the best players in the league. I think those things are nice, but at the end of the day both Avila and Cabrera were flat out better players. They did more to help their teams win games by way of being flat out better players.

Also, it doesn't matter even an iota that they were the "AL Champion Rangers."

  10. I think it's more than a stretch to say Michael Young was worth 11 wins last season.

Adjusted for the park they play in, they had the third best offense and second best pitching in the league.

He had a fine year, and yes, his ability to play a couple of different positions is valuable (even if every single defensive metric rates him poorly,) but he was that team was not a Michael Young away from missing the playoffs.
