  1. President Bush's Anti-Black Hurricane Maker wasn't fully operational until 2 months after the hurricane hit.

As for blaming Bush for the aftermath, not much he could've done. It was such a beauracratic mess, so much red tape. If you want to blame anything, blame the system.

if you're going to quote what i said, please keep the context of the entire sentence simply because the point was relevant. the reason that hurricane was so devastating was nothing slowed it down before it hit the mainland (such as wetlands -- a natural barrier that has been destroyed by our environmental policies under the last few presidents). these abnormally powerful natural disasters have a cause, and it's not angry gods. it's irresponsible resource management.

the red tape is in place DIRECTLY BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION!! remember hurricane andrew? FEMA (which wasn't stacked with cronies) responded quickly and fairly efficiently. The so-called red tape was bumbling and incompetent navigation of the channels of government. Also, there was a very real move to privatize as much of the relief as possible (naomi klein wrote a great article about this). in blaming the system, you are in fact blaming the bush administration. they moved fema to DHS and staffed it with non-professionals who couldn't find their asses with both hands and a mirror. that is the system.

while i liked the underdog cartoons possibly more than the next guy, i wouldn't confuse bush with simon bar sinister, although i'd not vote for either of them for county dog catcher.

  2. the hurricane was a natural disaster. it's debatable if the bush admin is responsible for that (shitty environmental record - although clinton's wasn't much better on wetlands restoration).

that said, most of the trauma from this was completely man-made and exacerbated by incompetence. there were offers to help immediately from countries we don't like, so we said no thanks and pretended that we could handle it. incompetence and politics killed people. that incompetence ranges from local to federal and all points between, but the ultimate responsibility for such a disaster is FEMA, a division of Homeland Security, a cabinet level position. "the decider" was playing guitar in a photo op while people were dying. added to reading about the pet goat on 9/11, it's a pattern of fiddling while rome is ablaze.

  3. it's amazing the president said that he's leaving because people were dragging his good name through the mud for political reasons. wasn't this the guy who campaigned to bring accountability back to government? the gonzo confirmation hearings were the most contentious i'd ever watched. I'm reasonably sure they would have impeached him for contempt of congress had he not resigned.

let's hope for a competent replacement for the remainder of the term.

  4. as long as suzie and johnnie teenager are so involved in seventeen million clubs and school sports teams (and NOT working), no one will do the traditional afterschool (i.e. shitjob) work. we're soft to an unforgivable degree. and i'm drunk. goodnight.

  5. when repression is amended into constitutions, it creates problems. the 18th amendment was repealed, and eventually all the same-sex marriage bans will be repealed. constitutions are written with positive statements to protect rights, not negative statements to restrict citizens. a flag burning amendment is exactly wrong based on the template of the bill of rights. the government is restricted, the citizen is enabled.

that said, fetuses are not citizens, and we've got a pretty clear track record on how we afford rights to non-citizens in this country.

  6. my cat died earlier this year of kidney problems. it wasn't because of chinese poisonous food, but that food causes the same issues my cat had. it's a horrible, wasteful disease and is hard to watch a pet deteriorate and dehydrate from this.

PLEASE be cautious, pet owners! we feed nutro dry food for our dogs (mixed with innova evo). these aren't chinese sourced.

  7. i can't see purgering yourself as a good thing. i know i pay extra on my insurance for uninsured motorist coverage. i also pay a little bit (unvoluntarily) when I get license plates for the state's uninsured motorist coverage. if in doubt, play the plausible denial card the reagan and second bush administration made famous -- "i don't recall" goes a long way.
