  1. Well I could keep it above

But then it wouldn't be sky anymore

So if I send it to you you've got to promise to keep it whole

Buy the sky and sell the sky and lift your arms up to the sky

And ask the sky and ask the sky

    REM - Fall on Me

  2. I have a brother who is 4 years older than me. While I do have to give him credit for turning me on to Blue Oyster Cult back in 1977, our musical tastes pretty much split after that. It probably has a lot to do with our age difference and that we haven't spent much quality time together since the late 1970's. He went off to college in 1978 and discovered BOC, Genesis, and The Moody Blues; I went off to college in 1982 and discovered The Ramones, Clash, and American hardcore. I don't think that music plays much of a role in his life anymore - he's more into guns.

The last birthday present I got from him in 1983?

My wife and I are far more sympatico in our musical tastes.

  3. You forgot: when people behind you cannot see because you are standing, sit.

What if the people in front of you are standing? It's not like you're blocking their ears.

It's a rock concert. It's Wilco. Not the Turtle Island String Quartet.

  4. I thought the pep rally atmosphere was a little strange after his death but then again, blindly exuberant displays of nationalism always kind of freak me out.

Although I'm a bit annoyed by the over-exuberance, it's not like Americans are ever going to be able to celebrate the end of the war on terrorism.

  5. I just want Nels CLine to rip loose, I feel likes he's kind of held back the last two records. The times when he does like in Impossible Germany and One Wing are my favorite parts of those albums. I know there is a minority that think Cline has "ruined" wilco...I disagree...I just think he needs to be given a little more freedom to experiment. His solo stuff is way out there.

    I agree with this.

I would love to hear a Loose Fur-type project w/ Nels, Jeff, and Glenn. Maybe that's not just wishful thinking?

  6. That is somebody that I have been wanting to get into for a while now, but I just don't know where to start. Thanks for the reminder.

My suggestion would be to start with Histoire du Melodie Nelson and one of the comps of his late 60's pop stuff (probably Comic Strip) - both are now available as domestic releases so they're pretty reasonable price-wise.

  7. There are a few songs that I tear up just thinking about, including:

Sufjan Stevens - Casimir Pulaski Day

Wilco - Handshake Drugs (live version w/ Nels can have me weeping over how beautiful music can be)

The Tennessee Waltz (if it's a version done by one of those old country guys)

The Battle Hymn of the Republic (especially the "in the beauty of the lilies" verse)

  8. And I didn't even bring up the hypocrisy of championing the underdog working class of teachers while basically shitting on the cleaning staff who'd have to make the Capitol useable again.

Get a hose, a bucket of soapy water, and a sponge and I bet the cleaning staff will shine right up.
