  1. Drive My Car - a local FM station plays the "toot-toot beep-beep" part as the intro/outro to their traffic report which they broadcast every 10 mins. or so during morning & evening rush hour. It's a song I used to be ambivalent about, but after several years of this I can honestly say I hate DMC.

  2. The age we begin getting social security should be raised to 70 for anyone currently 50-55 and younger. It's never changed while life expectancy has. No idea how many years of solvency that adds and what it does to the job market by keeping people in the workforce longer, but it seems like a no brainer.

I think this is inevitable, but can we wait 2 years until we raise it for folks 50 and under? ;)

  3. Skylarking

    Nonsuch

    25 O'Clock

    English Settlement

    Mummer

    Oranges & Lemons

    Psonic Psunspot

    Apple Venus Vol.1

    Big Express

Skylarking is at the top of my list of darn near perfect albums, along with Stone Roses S/T, Let it Bleed, More Fun in the New World, YHF, and a couple others I can't think of right off the top of my head. I've not listened to the pre-English Settlement albums that much (just the singles) so they're not on my list.

I saw this movie - The Rise and Fall of the Clash - last night. It apparently debuted at the CBGB Festival last week but they had a showing in Boston. It was pretty good. It focused more on the fall than the rise, and spends a lot of time on the relationship between Joe Strummer and manager Bernie Rhodes. It also includes interviews with the replacement "Clash" guys who were around during the Cut the Crap era, which, they all admit, was a joke and fairly sad.

I don't know how widely it is going to be showing but it's worth tracking down if you are a Clash fan.

There's been plenty of discussion about this project (including some of the folks directly involved in the film) for the past couple of months over on the IMCT board. Here's the thread link if anyone wants to dig in: http://www.clashcity....php?f=7&t=7949

  5. We saw Moonrise Kingdom last weekend and while not quite on par with Rushmore & Tenenbaums (Rushmore is still my favorite version of Andersonville for many of the same reasons that Beltmann so eloquently stated, plus I had a huge crush on Olivia Williams' character) I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the film. I found it easier to buy into Andersonville in a relatively isolated setting with a small cast of characters. When that world is expanded the facade slips a bit.

  6. Here are two collages from the past couple of years with Wilco-related titles. The titles came about some time later, when I realized they were somewhat related to the images - my apologies for the size of the jpgs:

  7. My instinct was to forget the letter--after all, these are heated times--but my wife decided to inform the police, just in case a paper trail was needed. Turns out that at least five other neighbors had already reported receiving the letter, and police are investigating it as a crime. The story also featured on at least two Milwaukee TV news stations.

Isn't it a federal crime to put stuff in other folks' mailboxes w/o paying postage? I'll be curious to hear how this story plays out.

  8. We definitely got the Rockin' Wilco setlist for St Augustine, maybe because they were dealing w/ a fairly tight curfew. I Noticed Jeff looking off-stage a couple of times during the encore, probably checking how much time they had left. We really had a great time - no problems w/ anybody in our center area down by the stage. Loved loved loved the acoustic Spiders.

Also, we bumped into John downtown the next day which was a pleasant surprise.

  9. Also, something I don't get... why does everyone assume "religious" people can't be liberal/will not back the president.

I am a Christian, but I keep church and politics separate. The way this country is run should not be dependent upon its leader's religious affiliations. That leader should do what is best for this country, not what's best for the preachers of doctrine, and vice versa. Doctrine should not be intertwined with politics.

That being said, I voted for Obama in 08 and plan to vote for him this time.

  10. I think Jay would've run out of instruments sometime in 2004.

I'd love to hear more collaboration with O'Rourke - perhaps another Loose Fur album?

  11. It's getting kinda close for not knowing the opening act.

Can it be Blitzen Trapper? Please?

    .

A quick check of High Road Touring shows Purling Hiss as openers for WIlco May 10-19 - can't say I've heard of them.
