5 - (1969) The Archies*
10 - (1974) Elton John*
15 - (1979) ELO
20--50 (1984--2014) The Clash
*based on whatever AM radio station my parents happened to be listening to. And I agree with CCRGMac - The Clash have been, and always will be, the most important band in my life.
-
Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
The Clash - Sandinista!
X - More Fun in the New World
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Wilco - YHF

Kiwifruit

If we're talking about great songs rarely played live, my vote is for Dash 7.
-
Okay, so the opening act at my first concert was Lone Justice, so I'm thinking that this was probably the first really great song that I ever heard, live:
Did you see them when they opened for U2?

Is there gas in the car?
Yes there's gas in the car

I'm gonna read Joyce's Ulysses. I've had a copy on my bookshelf for the past 25 years and I've never gotten any farther than the introduction and the first dozen pages or so. This is the year that I'm gonna do it.

that's the funniest thing...there are only three 'punk' bands in the HoF
ramones - 2002
clash - 2003
sex pistols - 2006
and now Green Day is in on the first ballot?
what about Black Flag? The Damned? Stiff Little Fingers? Dead Kennedys? Bad Brains? Minor Threat?
sure, none of them even came close to the commercial success of Green Day, but they made their mark in much deeper and imo more important ways.
I guess that's how it works. It's the bands that take those influences and turn it into longevity/commercial success that get into the R&RHoF. That's why we get Nirvana (but not the Pixies), Red Hot Chili Peppers (but not the Minutemen), Green Day (but not Buzzcocks/SLF), etc.etc.

2 for St. Augustine!

Aside from popularity, I don't see them as having done anything noteworthy, or deserving of what is supposed to be the highest honor in rock music.
Will Weezer deserve it when their time comes? How about Foo Fighters? Black Eyed Peas?
Nothing against any of those bands, but popularity alone doesn't cut it for me.
Right or wrong, I think the Foo Fighters are a lock the first year they're eligible - they're popular, still around, and have the right pedigree (American, "from the ashes of") - just the kind of group that RS loves.

Hello (again) St. Augustine!

Two bands I discovered via REM:
Wire
Pylon

But somehow Joan Jett gets on the list.
...but The Runaways don't.
It really is a popularity contest.

Saw them at the Athens show & I liked them just fine; I was really impressed with the drummer. Mrs. Moxiebean said the vocals reminded her of Clare Grogan from Altered Images.
They seem really good at what they do but for us they didn't have that special intangible "it".

CD finally arrived yesterday and I'm spinning it right now. I did listen to the NPR album stream a couple of times while at work last week in preparation for the Athens show, but this is the first time I've been able to cue it up on a decent stereo system & crank it. I love how bits of the iphone demos surface in the mix, especially on I'll Sing It.

Scott Walker's last three albums (Tilt, The Drift, and Bish Bosh) all released after he turned 50.

There's a fraction of a second pause in the guitar chord at the beginning of the second verse (at around 0:41) that I find absolutely joyous and exhilarating

Got 2 GA for Athens

I recently read "Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker," probably the most depressing bio I've read.
-
a few that I've read recently that I've enjoyed:
"Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division" -- Peter Hook (also, his book about the Hacienda Club)
"The Stone Roses: War and Peace" -- Simon Spence
"Who I Am" -- Pete Townshend
Keef's autobiography was a fun read, too.

I seem to remember from the Kot book that the folks in Wilco (with the exception of Jeff) are salaried employees. If that's still the case I guess this year is equivalent to getting a paid sabbatical leave. I think the real tension and tough decisions would happen if any of the band members could earn Wilco-type money from their individual projects, which I don't see happening any time soon.

AM - It's Just That Simple (sorry John...)
BT - Dreamer in my Dreams
ST - ELT (far and away my least favorite song from the first three albums)
YHF - Reservations (not bad at all, it's just that I like everything else on the album more)
ABIG - Less Than You Think (I appreciate it on a conceptual level, but rough sledding as a listening experience)
SBS - Walken (so many other contenders...)
WTA - I'll Fight (ibid)
TWL - Capitol City (winner for my least favorite Wilco song, so far...)
-
AM - Dash 7
BT - I Got You (@ the End of the Century)
MA - One by One
ST - How to Fight Loneliness
MA2 - Airline to Heaven
YHF - Poor Places
AGIB - Handshake Drugs
SBS - Impossible Germany
W(TA) - Wilco (The Song)
TWL - Whole Love

I still dig the bouncy bassline and guitar solos at the end of "Hotel California" so I'm gonna go with that.
