someone get up on the wrong side of their local indie record store today?
yep, sorry to vent. just went to two stores today that i hadn't frequented in a while and TRIED to buy and sell some pretty good stuff and was just totally blown off etc. one place makes it's money selling on ebay, so they don't give a shit. the other place is ultra hip in an ultra hip part of town which totally supports him. unfortunately, my favorite store, which is all used, recently moved far away in an attempt not to close. so i guess i'll just have to stick with him.

because mp3s are way overpriced and too low a bitrate, cds are way overpriced, artists get no money, and most of all, record store clerks/owners are complete and utter assholes!! do they deserve to go out of business? i wonder
-
it was utterly compelling and satisfying. better than dexter, weeds, and californication which i think are the best shows ever on tv. thoughts? maybe i am too happy about this given i hate tv.

I know a number of very qualified teachers who would gladly take you to school on this issue!
Indeed. But both sides of the aisle show their stupidity on education. Create standards, don't fund them but hold the teachers responsible for them. Grade schools and students with standardized tests, but have the tests scored by uneducated civil service employees. Require more documentation than a teacher can get through in an 8-hour day, and yet also require that they teach kids morals, sex education, creationism, exercise parents kids because they're fat -- and don't require a parent to be responsible for anything. Hard to make a living wage when you're having to spend out of your own pocket for school supplies because the schools won't provide them and you can't ask the parents to.
hey, don't forget that teachers and schools are also in charge of ending racism, treating family issues, identifying and treating mental health issues, teaching in unteachable circumstances, feeding hungry kids, and being the gatekeepers for child abuse and neglect.

thanks for posting this!! i have never really been able to get into will, but seeing this really gets me fired up. his guitar playing is so similar to the way i play, and his singing is complete
ly genuine.

Well, he's being a combative dick, so yeah.
hey, at least i ain't callin' names
anyway, i've decided to drop The Band from my list too.

Better duck, Rider, they're coming for ya now.
Even if you're right, you're gonna get slammed for that one. Trust me, I should know.
bring 'em on
...seriously though, just my opinion. once in while i just let loose and slam everything. right now i want to slam neil young if you can believe that

All of this, yes. Except "craig."
yes, not the 'craig' part...
going to see patterson hood solo tomorrow at the decatur, ga book fest.

Not sure I agree there. I haven't had an urge to listen to that album since it came out. Really, really, weak album in an otherwise pretty sweet catalog.
Pretty much every album raved about by VC folks is criminally underlooked when you consider that bands like Nickelback and Maroon 5 are on multi-million dollar tours.
except for neil young and the band, pretty much everything raved about here is over-rated and complete crap. as far as criminally overlooked, anything by Thin Lizzy, except maybe the first album.

Brighter Than Creations Dark is the best album of '08. The more I listen, the more it seems like a classic to me. Who knew a 19 song album could be so cohesive. Spooner helps too.

I was just reading the book about the making of the film - pretty heavy stuff. It's pretty funny to read what Ross Halfin has to say about Lars on his blog from time to time.
what book is that? the movie was really interesting.

I just read a piece about the new record in the LA Times. I have to say I'm actually excited to hear the new one.
i am too. the production is not the best, but at least its dry and not all crapped up like 90s or 80s style metal. i like it. guess it's what i am looking for at this point. all good critiques though.
-
Didn't see anything on this or the new album. the song is totally compelling and well-produced. tried several times to get into 'tallica in the past to no avail. actually checked out a bit of their last album and it's pretty interesting.

i know i am late to this thread, but what the hell. excellent topic.
the most recent show i walked out of on purpose was Mark Kozelek. Started late, really late, and just dicked around on stage.
i pretty much leave everything early these days. at least during the encore, unless it's like some cosmic show. which basically only happens once a year for me, if i am lucky. i guess it's because i am getting old. the last couple shows where time stopped was Black Mountain and Gillian Welch. was thinking about going to DBT with Hold Steady buy i know i would be miserable. maybe ben kweller in october will be good. and i am def. sneaking into metallica.

Other than T Gap, there isn't a whole lot more I know from Stills.... 4 + 20 and Blackbird I suppose are the next top songs for me after Gap.
Shame about his voice although I would still chance seeing him just to here him play that song again.
cool you got to see him in 95. i'm sure he sounded awesome. he can still play great guitar, but he just totally sings out of tune. i don't mind the raspy age in his voice, just sing in key!
well, you gotta check out Stephen Stills, Stephen Stills II, Stills, Manassas, and Stills Alone. all have some great songs on them along with some really really bad stuff. Do For Others and Singin' Song are up there with T Gap.

very sad and tragic. crazy news. the article reported that DMB played the night he died. i am amazed bands can do this. i wouldn't be able to move after someone that close to me died.

Anyone familiar with this Stephen Stills song? Anyone a fan of it?
My roommate in college played it once and instantly I was hooked not only by the melody, but the words. In the notes from the CSN&Y boxes yet, there is a Stills quote saying that the lyrics can stand alone without music - that it is poetry.
I often find myself searching that song out now and then when I need a little pick-me-up and inspiration. It is probably one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
Not sure why it isn't more popular...
If any of you are CSN fans, give the song a listen.
Just wanted to share my thoughts...
"It's not matter the distance, it's the ride." --Stephen Stills
what's up partner!
i a pretty big csny fan. ever since i heard them in high school, i keep going back to them. got the box set back in 91 when it came out and damn if Thoroughfare Gap isn't just a gem. Probably one of my favor Stills songs and one of my favorite songs of all time. It's one of those songs I never tire of. CSN have several songs like that for me. The reason i think it isn't as popular is because most folks don't know about it. It's on the album of the same title which is totally horrendous! Over the past year i have been trying to collect some of Stephen's best solo stuff and his albums from the late 70s to early 80s are terrible except that one song, Thoroughfare Gap.
Great post. Any other favorite still's songs? i am partial to his acoustic stuff. There are a few on his latest release Man Alive, Heart's Gate being the best.
On a sad note, stills voice is shot and i can't believe people still pay money to see him or that he still has the audacity to tour and expect people to come.

Coil encores = majestic beauty
Makisupa opener is always a good sign. I was at these 2 shows as well, and your absolutely correct; the 8/11 was great but tends to get lost in the shuffle compared to the previous night
i pretty much saw every midwest and south east phish show in the 90s. it was an ironic time, because i was lamenting having not seen the dead at their prime, but was right there for phish in their prime. i mean, every show was amazing back then. setlists were sick and that was just the way it was. the energy was actually overwhelming at times. it was really interesting watching the scene grow from a few of us doing hacky sack in front of the venue to the huge deadesqe parking lot scene. it's so weird to see all this 'remembering' in this thread. doesn't seem that long ago that phish shows were a dime a dozen. maybe 2-3 shows in one state and an easy time scoring tickets. anyone remember getting the Doniac Shavice(sp) anticipating tour or album news? that was preinternet. damn, i remember the buzz for Billy Breathes being crazy as we Hoist was such a let down. especially after Rift.

Rain Dogs
Real Gone
Bone Machine
Mule Variations
Small Change
Blood Money
i am amazed at all the love for Real Gone. I like about 1/2 of it. It is a damn difficult listen. Harsh and nightmarish. Hearing those tunes live in 06 was fun, but I am partial to the piano ballad stuff...Picture In A Frame, Georgia Lee, etc.

it seems like every 6 months some musician has passed away. this one really hits home. as a gen x-er we rebelled against most of the junk we grew up with and cut our teeth on classic rock. Floyd was one of those top 10 bands for me along with the usual, zep, beatles, etc. it never ceased to amaze us that the wall was less than 10 years old and radio had completly been taken over by dance/pop/shit!! over the years i really got to appreciate and love rick's minimalist keyboard work and his awesome voice. perfect for pink floyd. his verses on Time and his handful of solo tunes through out the years were highlights. will have to listen to 'wearing the inside out' today. it's on division bell which some may dislike, but that song is excellent. rock on!![:worship](https://viachicago.org/uploads/emoticons/default_worshippy.gif)
