  1. that quitting music thing didn't last very long

i think this record was in the can before he 'quit'. i remember reading a quote from him about using an orchestra etc. on the album, but that was a few years ago.

the new album info seems really vague though. the article doesn't explicitly mention it.

  5. I'm sure there will be "unofficial" CD rips of it floating around ... don't worry.

In the meantime, you can hook most DVD players up to stereos, y'know? The one I have plays eleventy-four different formats and I use it as a CD player more than anything.

good point. also, the more i think about this, it all seems like a marketing ploy. the next thing we will hear is that only a limited number of copies will come out, only to have the CDs released later. not to mention when they are available on itunes with an 'alternate' version of Mr. Soul available only with purchase of the entire album. with the CD business in the throws of change, this archive release is looked at as huge future earnings and i am sure BlueRay, DVD player manufactuers, itunes etc. all have their hands in this. hell, they're all one company!

    so, we'll see.

  6. my wife just said to me as i read this, "why are you surprised!"

we've been hearing about this since 89!!

so we wont be able to have the tunes on our ipods. we have to sit in front of the TV to watch/listen.

that sounds fun for a bit, but i really just wanted the cds. damn!! not to mention the fact that mosts folks are

clamoring for vol. II with homegrown etc.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ah :realmad

  7. Listening to 8/13/93 right now, coincidentally ... just all around fantastic.

was there! pretty much caught every midwest show during the 90s. $20 for tix....

anyone at cincy music hall, summer 94 i believe when the fire alarm went off and the entire place had to evacuate? we got back in and the band played Fire, hilarious. they didn't set break either, just jammed out.

  8. I'd like to buy you a beer sometime.

Those Simple moments are definitely top moments for me too. I think my favorite is that moment in YEM. There was some crazy dude who used to review YEMs on andy gadiel's page in the old days. I think he called it the "nirvana" moment? Jeez, andy gadiel. I am dusting off some cobwebs. Did anyone else here check out gadiel's page? Haha, oh man. I can't believe that was 13 years ago...

    (NP: 12/6/96) :)

i checked gadiel's page religiously!! glad he is getting some props here. as i said, early 90s to 97 were amazing years. coming from the dead frame of mind, it was impossible to call a song at a phish show. they could open with anything and had so much energy. it was also fun being with a band from the beginning, starting in small venues and getting bigger etc. and hearing new tunes and how they might change on record. also, hearing how songs changed. just a real special time. not to mention they toured like mother fuckers and played everywhere. not just 5 venues like the dead!

alas, i am a recovering phish addict too. listen to rift once in a while and might pick up page's album. other than that, i am burned out!

    c :stunned

  9. I really enjoyed Phish until 99/2000. Frankly, I was glad to see them part. The music really sucked before hey parted. If they do get back together, I would hope for a change of how they did things. They just kept wanting things to get bigger and bigger until they were not enjoyable anymore. Too many hipsters ,druggies and hangers on towards the end. I know there were many rumblings about drugs in the band towards the end. My feelings would be mixed over any reunion.

saw phish in 92 in a really small room, bogarts in cincy. anyway, i remember just hoping the band would not become cliches and get into drugs etc. alas, they did. too bad. those were fun days.

JerseyMike where did you hear they had been jamming???

I thought thats when they stopped jamming and started playing well. 97,98,99 Phish is WAY better IMO and I saw them first in 89

true, 89 was rough, but there was a point, probably before hoist when they really prided themselves on coming out and playing Rift, It's Ice, Fluffhead, Guyote note for note and doing all that crazy shit on stage that was totally planned out.

  10. The other poster is sugggesting that heroin has the same active ingredient as oxycontin, codeine and any number of opiates that come in pill form, which is true, but not quite the same thing.

point is that its all opioids or opiates. synthetic or derived from opium.

  11. i'm hoping for a reunion. i hope the boys get their shit together and recapture some of the pride they had at the beginning. playing songs to perfection, working out arrangements, playing smaller venues, etc. as far as i am concerned, everything went to hell in 97 when they got into all the free jamming at the expense of getting the notes right on Rift or YEM for example. ironically, story of the ghost came out around that time and is an incredible album.

    craig

there was heroin in the car not just pills.

so, pills are basically heroin if the pills were opiates. DUI, yes, criminal. holding, major social/medical problem. not criminal.

    craig

  12. FIVE YEARS probation for some pills? Draconian?

i agree. i used to be a substance abuse therapist and the one thing i realized is that we can't criminalize addiction without being draconian. he missed a meeting. big deal for recovery, but not criminal. just tack on some more meetings etc. not to mention he has passed all drug tests. stellar! going to jail hopefully was an attention getter for him.

He got an extremely typical sentence for his charge in New York State.

    which is ridiculous!

  13. I still like Phish, although not as much as I did in the mid 90s. I put on Story of the Ghost the other night and it made me feel really good. What a great album.

i also had way too much of phish in the 90s. however, i have held on to my copies of rift and story of the ghost. great studio albums all around. def in my top 25 favorite albums.

  14. They're not like Beatlemania where they try to be the Dead. While they have had members (I remember a "Bobby" from a while back who affected Weir's mannerisms eerily dead-on) whom bear an uncanny vocal stage presence resemblance (their keyboard guy unfortunately even passed away a couple years ago), and although they usually play complete shows (with "bonus" materials tossed in at the end), they aren't trying to replicate the concert note for note. They bring their own musicianship to the table and they've always been top-notch when I've seen them (roughly 20+ shows).

They're just sharing their take on tunes they dig and that there's still an audience for. Personally, I don't like big venues and try to avoid them. I appreciate being able to see good music in small clubs.

I think some people tend to get irked by them because they're "just a cover band." I say: so what? It's a night of good musical talent with tunes I love and people I like to be around (for the most part).

i have seen them a few times. the jerry guy sounds like garcia, but can't jam at all. they get all the little licks in etc. i can do with out the 'donna' woman. not necessary. also, the 'bobby' dude is just too much like weir. it's amazing he plays guitar like bob (he's a very peculiar player inverted chord voicings etc.) but he's just kind of wierd. DSO gets cool when the do their own sets...shit us heads would have loved to have seen ie: Chinacat>Scarlet>Help>Terrapin>Slip>El Paso>Franklins>Fire>Rider>Playin' Reprise!!! Wow that looks so cool on paper!

  15. I had forgotten all about Adam Katz story, I remember it well, my parents would bring it up to dissuade me from disappearing for a few days of show going.

i forgot about him too. always remember his pic in the back of relix or dupree's diamond news. always hoped to see some info on it each issue. alas, nothing.

speaking of bust outs, i saw that last To Lay Me Down at deercreek 92. great show that night. second night blew!

and what about garcia playing Black Muddy for the last show in 95, followed by Box of Rain which was written about phil's dead dad.

    crazy stuff...

  16. No. It gives you the option to do so, but it is not mandatory. iTunes pluses are 256.

this really concerns me! so even though i rip discs into itunes at say 320, it gets compressed as it is synced to the ipod? utterly ridiculous if true. please, tell me more and how to access any changes.

  17. I love the nostalgic stories thread! My first time seeing the Grateful Dead was Nov 1985 in Rochester, NY. Sold out, but an old hippie looked kindly on us and let us pay $35 for 2 tickets, had a blast. I was 15. My parents let me go with my older boyfriend of 3 months. It all worked out, I eventually married him, but I'm pretty sure I won't let my daughter do that. I remember a great show, the one that gave me a lifelong love affair with "Deal."

I remember my idiot brother in law crashing gates in 87 or so even though he had a ticket. Dick.

I remember flying out of Albuquerque in the ice storm of the century to go to a show in Arizona. Some deadhead on the plane bought a round of drinks for everyone after a successful but hairy takeoff. And sitting in a hotel hot tub with a bunch of strangers with music blasting from the windows of some room.

    Good times.

There was a lot of beautiful stuff, a lot of scary stuff near the end. I saw so much great music. A concert always came when I needed it the most. I met wonderful people. I wondered out loud the other day to someone when I stopped putting GD stickers on my car. I realized that it was when I couldn't see them anymore. I moved overseas in 93, right after the Vegas shows. I never got to see them again, although from stories my friends told, I probably wouldn't have wanted to go.

I'm just thankful that even though I'm a mom in my late 30's, I feel like I really lived my youth, because of the travelling, friends and music I got to experience over those years and probably 30-40 GD shows.

I'm also thankful that I listen to awesome music from bands who are touring TODAY. Like Wilco.

really loved your comments. that story about the dude buying drinks on the plane is just classic. man, come tour time we were all just psyched. anyway, i recently got to hang out with an old touring buddy and we were just talking about how glad we were we caught the dead and the scene. i mean, i pretty much saw america because of the dead. i visited so many states and towns and met so many people. what a great cultural experience. and all the towns knew who we were and just loved us. especially new york. a rockin' town to see the dead in!
