Let us know what you think. I might have to dig that one out now that i think of it. Other second tier tracks are: Cherub Rock, Geek USA (nice spacey bridge), Rockit, and of course Silver Fuck. Today is good too, but way overplayed. And, I could do without Disarm and Space Boy.

PS-that b-sides comp is probably their second best disc. Some nice stuff between the underproduced Gish and Siamese Dream. Key tracks there are Drown, Plume, and Starla. Damn, awesome song!

  2. I don't know much of their music but a friend dl'd a few of their albums on my computer back a while ago.

Gish, Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream - any suggestions on particular tracks I should listen to/download?!?

    Thanks

Siamese Dream was the only album during my sophmore year of college that I listened to inscently beside grateful dead. i was never really into alternative music, but his album just nailed me after i ended up seeing them in a small venue right when the album came out. Awesome album and a real grower. Key tracks-Mayonaise, Hummer, Soma. It was one of those albums i would put on and before i know it, it was over. That doesn't happen often. can't even remember the last time that happened.

Gish has a few fun tunes on it and i would go to that before mellon collie. that album is too overblown but does have some nuggets.

  3. I was at Pitt 95. pretty fun, but it rained. don't remember a riot. but, that was my last show and the one i saw the most naked people at:) mostly men, unfortunately. amazingly, it was the last time my dead buddies from college and i were able to get together to see a show together and ultimately, garcia died weeks later. it was time to be over. maybe not for jerry, but for the scene.

  4. Unfortunately, I only got to the 9/13/91 show ... still pretty good, though.

well, this is not popular with the heads, but my all time favorite era when it was all said and done had to be 80-81 and 90. used to love the 70s, but just never liked donna or keith. 91 had some fun stuff )scarlet>victim>fire), but way too much middle range with bruce in there. and damn it if vince was always too high in the mix.

  5. didn't take part in the last thread b/c i am basically burned out on the dead. they were my life for a good 12 years. even after garcia died. although that was a relief as it gave me a legit reason to not see shows that i knew were getting worse and worse and the damn hassle of seeing them. traveling for hours with no sleep, sleeping in cars, shitting at gas stations, camping in the rain...i could go on. but damn, when 'the boys' hit the stage it was awesome. no band has done that for me since. just garcia's guitar and the excitment of what they might play and the dancing and trying to guess at what they might play. i got pretty good at that.

...so, my harrowing story was spring 93. planned on seeing the final two shows at richfield in cleveland. got mail order tix and went with a buddy who had an old VW bus. unfortunately, in came what the media called the 'storm of the century'. we went anyway and what should have taken 3 hours took around 8 b/c of the low visability and drifting snow. not to mention the wind shield wipers on the van iced up several times. but i didn't care. we were seeing the dead and nothing was gonna get in the way. long story short, we get to cleveland hoping to go right into the venue and the gig is cancelled!! one of only a few times the band cancelled a show. anyway, it was huge hippie party at the hotels. the next night was just great! quick short first set, but tight and a nice long second set with a rare Touch opener. and the bust out of I Fought The Law. we thought that was so cool until we had heard it 70 times by summer 95.

...so, i am not able to listen to the dead anymore. but am really loving me some jerry band these days. that two disc set from 91 is probably one of my all time favorite cds ever!!

dude, aren't all the ones you listed totally overhyped? when did whiny music with vibes etc. become what we actually think is good? no offense to your list at all. i like wilco, but i just do not like anything other folks seem to listen to on this board.

hell, my album of the year is Magnolia electric co. sojourners. just some warm mid tempo tunes with rhodes and guitar.

ps. dig your band's darkside tribute.

  8. Thought I'd revive this thread. What '08 releases are y'all anticipating? Besides what's already been mentioned, My Morning Jacket and Lucero are supposed to have albums out next year. What else???

well, i am really hoping for a new gillian welch record. i assume it's done and was supposed to come out in 07. also, neil young archives, but not holding my breath.

  9. Okay here we go...please forgive the obvious guilty pleasure(s)... :thumbup

    In no particular order...

  10. He died last Sunday from prostate cancer that he had been dealing with for 3 years. Dont know if anyone on this list cares for his music. I never liked him for the longest time (no pun intended). He could really pour on the syrup and the cheese. However, he had some great acoustic tunes a la CSN and Neil Young. His album Souvenirs was produced by Joe Walsh and I have enjoyed it.

    no thanks for this

well, i appreciate the mp3 thread. i just want a taste of the show and don't want to convert etc. flac aud recording is nothing special.

in addition, why do a handful of people on this forum always jump into every thread and make some jackass remark? just keep your toolishness to yourself for god's sake.

  12. i really think page stepped up to this. i mean, he has really practiced and after a broken finger? he is just hitting all the notes and not being sloppy at all. better than the 70s. plant sounds great and i am glad everything was basically tuned down a whole step for plant. everything was just played so well and the lower keys just gave it nice sludgy feel.

  13. i followed the nme blog and damn if it wasn't exciting. i mean, legends!!! led zep!!! i have been so excited the last week looking forward to this. it really has got me back into listening to them regularly. i just really feel like rock history was made tonight. not just some publicity show or money gig. these dudes played because they wanted to and it's just amazing. rock on!

  14. I completely agree with just about everyone. I use the shuffle on iTunes, but only to skip forward to a good album that I have not heard in a while, or some random artist. My crazy relative sends me 3-6 data discs every month. With this addition I get overwhelmed to the point of not even looking at what is on the discs. That said, I also cannot go into a record/cd/music store more than about 2-3 times a year, because I almost always spend about $100. Not even on new artists, just back filling my catalog. I tend to carry about 4 travel cd cases in the car with me and end up going through all four, while driving, to find the next cd, even though I know it will end up being one of about 15 cds. So yes music today is overwhelming.

totally fascinating. more music than ever before, even by our favorite artists, at our finger tips and we're all overwhelmed.

    craig

  15. Now, we have instant access to every fart, burp and whistle an artist decides to commit to plastic. The length of the cd medium has also diluted the quality of music. Some artists feel the need to fill every second of an 80 minute disc (the equivalent of a double vinyl album).

the whole 'everything an artist does we have to get' is really overwhelming. i gave up on that years ago. very rarely do i hear a 'bonus' track or whatever that i like better than the album. even with wilco. artists write a ton of shit and part of their art is choosing the songs they want on their album. we have no business hearing the rest. i also hate long cds. case in point, the new DBT is like 20 songs. way too much. i am sure they could do a tight 10 song album. i do miss the old days. so easy to get through an album with 7-10 songs on it. houses of the holy, neil young, etc.

  16. Digital music feels more disposable to me, whereas I want to hold on to cd's and records and get the most out of them.

i also feel like mp3s are disposable. just so easy pick up or delete. i miss when i was a kid and spending 10-15 bucks on an album and later a cd was a huge deal. it was always something i really wanted and i just let myself enjoy the entire thing. i need to get back to that. unfortunately, the dudes at the record stores in my town can be assholes.

  17. I have been known to delete my entire ipod in a fit of incompetence... :unsure OK, that really only happened once...

I have NEVER been able to "get" Tom Waits... I have tried and tried, but I just don't like listening to him. I liked him in Mystery Men though... :thumbup

damn, forgot he was in that. gonna have to rewatch that one. he's great in short cuts and is also in the new indy flick, wristcutters.

  18. the accessibility to all this music is both a blessing and a curse...i think it's shortened attention spans (including mine), due it becoming more disposable in nature. i mean, if you took the time to go out and buy a physical album/tape/CD...most of the time, you'd give it numerous spins whether you initially liked it or not. sometimes, it clicked for you and becomes one of your favorites.

i find myself giving less time to certain albums that don't sound good to me from first listen...it's too easy to click 'delete' on an album i'm most likely test-driving to see if i actually want to purchase. plus, i don't mind single tracks...especially if the rest of the album is of little interest to me.

so, i appreciate being exposed to more music...but a good % of it isn't that good...but i likely didn't drop any actual $ for it initially and all i'm out is the time wasted listening to it.

    so, yes, i'm overwhelmed sometimes.

yeah, i kept trying to listen to all this new stuff and it really wasn't that good to my ears. i also have a hard time allowing cds to become 'growers'...i have been trying to get into tom waits for a year now and it just isnt happening, even though i really like the idea of him and see him as an american treasure...go figure.

  19. Mp3 players are both a blessing and a curse. Honestly, I love having everything on one little box. My wife was probably going to divorce and/or kill me if I didn't do something about my sprawling cd collection. And I'll admit that it did get to the point that it stressed me out, too. The worst for me was trying to figure out what cds to take with me in the car and shuffling those cds in and out of my travel case. That guaranteed that there was always stuff lying around and I was always fiddling with that stuff. The ipod solved that problem for me and I love it for it.

It didn't, however, solve the problem of it being overwhelming to look for something. I have a (full) 60GB iPod, and when I scroll through the artists my eyes glaze over. I can't really browse for stuff that way--I still need to know what I am looking for before I start. And I can only do shuffle mode in small doses. I get the itchy "skip" finger a lot. I think the iPod has kind of killed my attention span. " :twitchsmile

a kindred spirit. i have been know to delete my entire ipod in a fit of rage. of course, putting it all back on over the next few days.

  20. Truth be told, I could probably whittle my collection down to 20 CDs and be happy.

i am the exact same way. i have actually gotten rid of a bunch of cds and just kept the core awesome discs. wilco, neil young, zeppelin. those are the ones i just keep going back to. i can listen to them over and over again.

I've downloaded numerous shows over the last few weeks and am frozen deciding whether to burn them to cd or upload to the ipod. Some of the shows are for an intro to bands I haven't heard (I See Hawks in LA, Mike Stinson, Devendra Banhart), and if I don't care for it, there's no need to have it on cd. If I do, I'd rather hear in it great quality, not mp3 on the ipod through the car. As a result, apart from listening to a few tracks on the computer, I haven't listened to any of it. Ridiculous.

I also tend to keep searching for new shows to download without stopping to enjoy the ones I've already downloaded. I'm sure this all has some deeper psychological meaning.

this is exactly what i am talking about. before i can enjoy the stuff i just got it becomes urgent that i download more new stuff!!

  21. i'm overwhelmed by the fact that i can't figure out this torrent shit. i bought a new computer just so i could start getting into this, and nope. i don't know what to do. everything i read is confusing.

oh, and get it together, man.

thanks-sorry about the torrent stuff. it is kind of painful. i suggest downloading azureus, installing it, going to btjunkie.org and pushing the download button on something you like. that's how i did it.

Most of my listening these days is at work, where I maintain a playlist of every single track on my external hard drive. The playlist is over 16,000 tracks long (nearly all of it is full albums -- I'm not the kind of listener who downloads single tracks), and most days I simply shuffle it and listen while I'm doing my work.

I try not to skip ahead at all -- it's certainly tempting to do so once in a while, especially during a throwaway track from the end of someone's album, but listening to stuff I'd forgotten about is a great way to rediscover good music.

At home, I have no such playlist -- I don't keep very much music around as digital files, so it's down to me and my wall of CDs -- and that is pretty intimidating. I sometimes stare at those shelves for half an hour trying to decide what to listen to, and by the time I do I don't even have time to listen anyway.

dude, i am the same way with the cd wall. it's like i have to decide before i even look. i also am an album guy. i can't stand single tracks. they gotta be really good.
