  1. Recently picked up a brand new vinyl bootleg (at Half Price Books) of Neil's11/17/92 concert at the local public TV studio (wttw). Listened to sides 1&2 last night; fantastic recording, sounded like I was right there in the room with him. I did see him play the following night. I wish I saw more shows on that tour. Highly recommended recording.

That's from the Center Stage show I think.  I saw him on that tour and it is probably my #1 concert experience.  I would love to see some archival releases from the solo 92 and 99 shows.

  2. I get everything the Dead did mixed up after Brent Mydland joined the band.

I can see that.  I'm that way with Phish, so I know what you're saying.

Just FYI, a lot of Ratdog shows are available on archive.org, many in soundboard.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  3.

Holy shit!!  What the fuck is going on?!  Loved Rob's Trio album as well as seeing him with Bob Weir.  His bass playing is always recognizable which is quite a feat on the stand up bass.  His playing with Ratdog live and the album is excellent too.  Really made Ratdog standout.

    RIP

I can't find the setlist for the Weir/Wasserman show I saw, but it was 8/6/92 at Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta.  I remember them playing Misty, and maybe Saint of Circumstance...or Victim or the Crime. I get those two mixed up. Pretty sure they played Spoonful, too.  Cockburn definitely opened. Not sure if Michelle Shocked was there.

Getting Victim and Saint mixed up!?  LOL, it was probably Victim.  I really liked seeming them too.  Would've loved to see them in a smaller venue.

  4. I was there.  I enjoyed hearing the Trace songs but I really loved Highway 61 and Methamphetamine. Dylan cover was cool, too. City Winery was a neat venue. I'm glad they finally got their issues worked out so they could open.

Yes, Highway 61 and Methamphetamine were great.  As was Barstow.  Hell, I love all the 'band' songs in the acoustic setting.  It just shows how strong the songs are.  Not many artists can do that.  The venue was great.  I had someone escort me to my seat! I did not drink wine though.  Also, couldn't help thinking some folks were there having dinner and didn't know a concert was scheduled.  :)

  5. I'd love to hear some of that '85 stuff.  Have to do a search.

The band is so great on the recent records.  I also like Dylan trying to sing rather than croak.  Song selection is awful.  Why do all these classic artist acquiesce to the 'standard covers' BS?  I guess it's better that putting out awful original music a la Neil Young.

  6. Jay Farrar tonight in Atlanta.  He's two guys with him playing random stringed instruments.  One is a pedal steel!

Jay was excellent.  Once you see him a few times, you begin to understand that he's just a quiet dude immersed in the performance.  I find him to be one of the few artists that can hold my attention playing solo for an entire show (another being Neil Young).  He played all of Trace with great care, not just running through the tunes.  Played some nice rarities (no UT) and a great totally re-imagined Rainy Day Women.  Venue was great.  Easy parking etc.  If you're in Atlanta, definitely check out the City Winery.

  7. I'm all for artists saying whatever the hell they want, but these statements are divisive, out of touch, and weird. Used to say let the music speak for itself, that it could do more to unify us than any statement. But been listening to the Bonnaroo show, not sure that's the case. Bobby and Mayer singing Jerry tunes is pretty brutal. Bobby's sing-speak is Shatner-esque. The playing is much more melodramatic (cheesy). And Mayer is a one trick pony on the guitar, blues licks all over the Other One. Some good moments here and there, but man, I could brutally trash these guys. It's not worth the time though.

Yeah, bob singing jerry has always been rough.  I really wish they had let one person (other than bob) sing the Jerry tunes in all the post garcia incarnations.  Bruce was the best.  Always a tribute and he made them his own.

As far as Dead and Co go...I usually watch the first few songs and then quit watching/listening.  It's exhausting to try and get through the whole show.  glad the kids have some semblance of the Dead to go see.

  8. Looks like Circles Around the Sun are playing Lockin'.  That would be fun.

Watched some of the first set of Dead & Co. at Bonaroo last night.  Everyone seems to be having fun and it was cool to see Donna.  Where was she at FTW?  Mayer is definitely taking some leadership.  He sounds great, but, as always, he's not Jerry.  I can never hear Oteil's bass with them either.

  9. Just back from CRB in Atlanta. They played a festival here.  Second time seeing them.  Really like the new bassist.  He actually jams a bit and fits in well.  Of course Neal was awesome.  Chris sounded great too.  Love his rhythm playing.  He looks so damn spaced out.  They played a funky version of Dylan's Baby Blue.  A few new ones I think.  They've worked up I Ain't Lyin' too.  Only complaint was they didn't do a Dead cover!

Edit-I guess they were at Mountain Jam yesterday or tomorrow.  What a trip.

  10. I was working a summer job in a factory - a co-worker who was a big heavy metal fan use to goof with me because I was hippie looking dude - always in a good nature way - he was the one who told me about Garcia's passing, he actually seemed remorseful about it. Even though I saw him at the last Soldier Field show and he looked terrible, I didn't really believe the guy, since through out the summer he was always saying shit -- when I got in my car after our shift ended, a Dead song was playing on the radio station when I turned my car on and figured it was true.

Right, my station never played Dead...for them to play Alabama Getaway meant something was up.  so sad.  i was not surprised and kind of relieved.

  11. I don't like it when I hit the Someone Elses Song thread and see RIP at the top.

Then I immediately see the artist, and am sort of "Good, I already knew that."

But BAD, and tragic, and sad for Glenn's family and fans.

Tough not quite half a year, I get jumpy when I hear two songs in a row by the same 60's - 80's artist on the radio. WXPN played 3 stones songs in a row this past weekend, I had palpable refief when they announced after it was a 3 songs themed weekend.....

Totally.  I remember getting in the car and hearing a rare Dead track in Aug. 95.  Sure enough, Garcia had died.
