  1. Oh man...

I saw a version of this show a couple of years ago in Sydney (sans a lot of the people mentioned above) but it was still wonderful. One of the best shows I've seen. So to hear this has been filmed is great news.

Is Chris Stamey still a part of the band? He was the bandleader on the night I saw the show and his love for this music was so infectious. It was a pleasure and a joy to watch him on stage.

  2. Just finished writing my first song in almost 2 years! Yeah, it's been a long dry spell. When writer's block gets me, it gets me bad. Still needs some tweaks, lyrically (and maybe a couple of chord changes, too) but it's basically done.

    Big sigh of relief.

Gonna talk to some of the guys and see if and when they are interested in getting into the studio to get the next tune on to the record.

Man, I know that feeling. But there's nothing like it when a song does come along after a dry spell. You feel like you walk a little taller in the world.

  3. According to this link http://www.setlist.fm/stats/jeff-tweedy-3bd698b4.html it was played 6 times in 2014, so these latest performances take the total to 8 times. Not exactly a setlist regular

I got so excited when it started because for a split second I thought it was something from Star Wars. Not sure why.

Still, it was an absolute pleasure to hear. I always skip it when I'm listening to the record because it just doesn't seem to fit for me. Hearing it last night, though, was pure elation.

I'll add to the comments above...there was so much joy in the room. Jeff and the band were very obviously enjoying it a lot. Lots of on stage laughter smiles and good times. Waaaay too much banter to report. Conversations and exchanges going on everywhere. Promises from Jeff that "when Trump becomes president" he and the other members of Wilco and Tweedy will all come down to live in Australia. Huge cheers for this of course but followed by, "It ain't gonna happen" (meaning Trump).

I think the solo set was longer. I didn't want it to end. Someone called out for One Sunday Morning and Jeff laughed saying that on acoustic guitar it sounded all the same. He then started playing it to big cheers! Didn't persist, though. I think he was tempted.

The energy of the band set was huge. Give Back The Key To My Heart, although a downer in subject matter, was all smiles and good feelings.

Two Bowie covers to finish was just as good as Wilco finishing with two Big Star covers (Thank You, FriendsIn The Street) when they played the very same venue a number of years ago.

To watch Jody Stephens sing Way Out West was a gift I never thought I'd receive in this lifetime. Bliss. I'll go along to see them (Those Pretty Wrongs) play tonight at Petersham Bowling Club.

It's been a big week. Meeniyan and Sydney for Tweedy and now Those Pretty Wrongs tonight. Then the carnival leaves town and we wait down here for another album, another tour. God bless 'em all!

  4. Wow...I can't add much to eckythump's excellent review above except to say that this show was special in a number of ways...the small town location, and the significance of the fact that this was Jeff's first ever solo performance in this country. So for him to start with I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, the song which started this whole Wilco journey for me so many years ago...well, it was one of many special moments last night.

Other random thoughts... Loved Hazel as an opener... Nobody Dies Anymore was stunning. That song was the one that leaped out at me first when the solo album first came out and it still has the same effect on me...the overall sound was clear and pure. Jeff's guitar sound is stunning...

I'm typing this from a phone so II'll post pics tomorrow.

  5. A wonderful show in a beautiful small town. Still barely in phone range where I'm staying as I type this so a detailed review will follow when I arrive home tonight. My wife took a heap of photos so I'll get those up, too.

Just gotta agree here that Five Years is also one of my Bowie favourites. A very special way to end the show.

  6. I completely agree. I'd seen Gillian Welch once several years back opening for Bright Eyes, but just saw Dave Rawlings Machine in Richmond in November. It was an AMAZING show, marred only by the biggest jackass I have ever had to endure standing just to my right who decided that it was a good idea to be on the rail, directly in front of the artist (and right next to me) and call his friend and loudly talk through the first two songs. Those of you who've seen them can only begin to imagine how cringe-inducing this was--directly in front of Dave Rawlings. Fortunately the drunk douchebag left after a couple more songs, but not before calling me an uptight old bitch for asking him politely to shut the fuck up.

That is terrible but glad he got out of your face.

The crowds in Sydney for each show were so respectful. Lots of cheering and whooping it up during Dave's solos, pindrop silence between songs but it was very expectant silence, 'cause when the banter started up there was a lot of good-natured exchanges between them and the audience. There was a whole lot of love in the room. Eleven years between shows is a long time.
