  1. If I did go vinyl, I would only buy older stuff.  Even that stuff is not so cheap.  I'm not a fan of 3 side vinyl for an album that was obviously formatted for the CD.

I've wasted a lot of time dicking around with the various formats over the last few years.  I've come to the point that if I really like the song/album, the format becomes moot.  I get lost in the song.  Now, having a pic and some liner notes definitely helps when getting into a new album.

A good sound notwithstanding, liner notes and information will always be a selling point for me. I loves me a well written essay, some unseen photographs, and knowing who played bass on track 3.

  2. I really dig the sound of the bass on this Autumn Defense clip but I am unfamilair with it. It reminds me of a Hofner Club bass but I'm almost certain it's not.

Best shots are at 0:40, 1:19,....ah just watch the clip. It's a great song!

EDIT: It's a Gibson. A brief, slightly unfocussed shot of the headstock right near the end of the clip afforded me a glimpse of the logo. But any pointers to its model would still be appreciated.

    Thanks.

EDIT: OK, a little research goes a long way. It's a Gibson Triumph Bass. Launched in 1971.

  3. The Robert Shelton book is great and I will often go back to it to read up on a particular era or album. His analysis of the 1965-66 output is particularly in depth from memory.

I also really enjoyed this when I read it some years ago:

    51%2BXdLGtD1L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jp

A great snapshot of his upward trajectory in the early years of the 60s when he was quite young and how intertwined he was with the Baez circle. The book is just as much about Baez and her sister Mimi Farina, and her husband Richard Farina, as it is about Dylan himself.

  4. That's my point. He doesn't play with any natural emotion. He seems to either emulate or show nothing. Nels i "believe" when he is playing like a maniac. Nothing seems forced. I'm glad Pat is part of this band but not to the point he needs to take any of the lime light away from Nels while playing live. I don't think he "feels" the music like the rest of the boys.

I think everyone's got different ways of "feeling" the music. Just because it's not showing outwardly doesn't mean he's not feeling it. I love watching Pat play. His style is relaxed and flowing and he plays with such ease and grace. I also really enjoy Nels' playing but, man, I tense up a lot when I watch him as he's getting toward the end of an Impossible Germany solo. No wonder he needs to ice his neck constantly.

  5. I've actually gone back to listening to CDs as spotify was too overwhelming. Also, I can't stand being on computer for any length of time. Of course I'm on one now. I just don't care for music interface stuff. I don't think CDs will die until gen-x dies off.

Agree here on a number of points. Spotify appeals to the ADHD in me and I find myself skipping from artist to artist and never fully following through on an album from start to finish. So yesterday I decided to put on Disc 1 of the Complete Basement Tapes and really listen to it. Man, what a record.

I'm with you on computers as well. I'll get off as soon as I finish this post!

I think there'll always be a place and a market (no matter how dwindling) for CDs. I went to a 20-something pub the other night (I'm 43) for a work event and all I heard was Bowie, Smiths, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Everything old is new again. There may be a retro attraction to CDs in the future.

  6. There use to be a Dylan library - where you would send them blanks and they would make copies. I think that may have been video only though. I see Dylan shows on Dime a Dozen from time to time. There may be a Dylan BT site out there. I don't know. I don't think I have ever collected Dylan live shows. The search for Wilco and related bands has pretty much taken up all my collecting time over the last decade or so.

I remember that - the Bob Dylan Tape Library. They did audio, too. They were very generous. In the days before youtube I desperately wanted to see Eat The Document and Renaldo and Clara so I sent the blank VHS tapes and they duly came back (no small thing as this was between the USA and Australia). They would sometimes put more stuff on at the end of the tape if there was any room left. So unexpectedly I found the John Hammond TV Special (1975 I think...around the time of "Desire") tacked onto the end of my copy of Eat The Document. I still have those tapes.

  7. I've read this book, along with Cannery Row, likely 20 times and will read it again....

Yeah, they're like that. Pure, beautiful writing.

    Now reading:

The last time I read Jane Austen was 25 years ago in high school (Pride and Prejudice). I wanted to try another one. A few chapters in and I'm enjoying it.

  8. Yet another example of music made 21 years before I was born that end being the sort of music I am into. ;)

This series always has a lot of care when it comes to the presentation, and music is always top notch. I grabbed Another Self Portrait this summer, it's now some of my favourite Dylan music ever. I'll be picking up the 3LP version which I believe is the same as the 2CD.

Yes, a lot of the Another Self Portrait material was wonderful.

  9.

I confess that I looked the code after taking the test to see which answer corresponds to each member :B (at the question about the Loft item they put two answers to Pat and there is no answer to John)

    Clever.

I would not even begin to know how to do that.

Hoping for John but happy with Pat.
