Can someone define "hipster" for me?
It's like obscenity - you know it when you see it.
-
So rich people shouldn't be marketed to? That seems illogical.
I am not stating, either expressly or implicitly, that rich people shouldn't be marketed to. I am saying that any way you try to sugarcoat it, BUYING A FUCKING LUXURY CAR AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT is pretty damn extravagant and any attempt to try to equate such a purchase as an example of thriftiness is something only a hunyock would accept. Merry Christmas to you, Sir/Madam.

one of the educational benefits of VC is all the hip new words I learn here. Most of them make sense, and I can get the meaning from context.
But I admit I'm stumped on hunyock. Little help on that one?
Go with def #1. I don't want to offend any Hungarians or Poles.

I currently have three Christmas ad campaigns that absoulutely drive me nuts*:
3. The Tommy Hilfigger/Honda commercials that use the Vampire Weekend song "Holiday". Maybe my contempt for these campaigns are more with the fact that the song was licensed to 2 campaigns more than the actual commercials themselves, but man, I hate these commercials.
2. A Verizon commercial that mashes up a Christmas song with Madness' "Our House" - yucck.
1. And tha absolute worst campaign is the Acura commercials with the smug yuppies talking about their extravagant holiday purchases (live reindeer decorations, chestnut (they are a fickle nut) roasters, etc) with the tag line that in order to combat conspicuous consumption the smart shopper saves money BUY GIVING A FUCKING LUXURY CAR! I'd like to meet the hunyock who came up with this idea and challenge him to a Rochambeau match.
The one commercial that I do like this year has been the Hyundai Christmas commercial with the quirky "Up on the House Top" carrol.
*Obviously these campaigns work because they have imprinted brand awareness into my memory.

For serious Christmas music, nothing beats the Vince Guaraldi Trio's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" - great childhood memories.
For kistchy Christmas music, nothing beats

With only one exception, I'm with cryptique and austrya on this one.
That one exception: Ice Boating

here comes the sun... doo'n doo doo!
Wait one cotton-pickin' minute . . . is it not almost Summer down there? How can you have the winter blues?
-
You can't go wrong with some Curtis Mayfield, particularly this track:
Ooooooooooh . . . that hits the spot, nice call.
-
I know it is only December 3 and not officially winter yet, but there is snow on the ground, my car is a mess, I can't remember the last time I saw the sun and it is getting dark hours before I leave work . . . but this song always brings a smile to my face and gets my toes a-tappin'

What gets you through the Winter Blues?

"Surely you can't be serious?"
"I am, and quit calling me Shirley."

So let me get this straight...
The same Cowboy team that shit the bed against the Packers; allowed David Gerrard to do something that JOHNNY FUCKING UNITAS never did against a Cowboy team (pass for four touchdowns in a game); and had a top round draft pick corner ole a tackle actually KICKED THE SHIT out of the Giants today?
REALLY>???
At least the Cowboys didn't lose to the Bills. F'n Lions.

That was a hell of Illinois/Michigan game (albeit the defensive play of both teams was pretty much non-existent). I was hoping IL would pull it off. The Big Ten has had some great games this year.
I would be happy if Michigan could average 67 points against the Illini in basketball this year. One of the strangest football games I've ever been to . . . and I still have a ear to ear smile on my face.
GO BLUE!!! BEAT PURDUE!!! DON'T SETTLE FOR THE PIZZA PIZZA BOWL!

RIP Sparky. This news, although not unexpected, still makes me very sad. 1984 was a great year.

Initial BcS rankings:
1 Oklahoma 6-0
2 Oregon 6-0
3 Boise State 6-0
4 Auburn 7-0
5 TCU 7-0
6 LSU 7-0
7 Michigan State 7-0
8 Alabama 6-1
9 Utah 6-0
10 Ohio State 6-1
Seeing Sparty in this is not unexpected given how well they have been playing, but it still pisses me off to no end.

I was going to take a road trip up to Kalamazoo but it doesn't look I am going to be able to swing it. IATTBYB, have you been in the Miller Auditorium; is it a nice venue?
Miller is very nice . . . similar to the Wharton Center in E. Lansing. It is the home of the K'zoo Symphony Orchestra and all the travelling Broadway shows. Bob will probably sound better at Miller than he did the last time he played in Kalamazoo at Wings Stadium (the hockey rink).

Sweet Fancy Moses, after reading Mr. Heartbreak's review, I just might end up forking over the bucks to see Bob when he hits Kalamazoo on the 29th.

Michigan's 5-0 start has been fun ... but they better beat Purdue on 11/13 to become bowl-eligible, because I'm not sure they'll win any of the other games left on their schedule.
10/9 - Michigan State
10/16 - Iowa
10/30 - at Penn State
11/6 - Illinois
11/13 - at Purdue
11/20 - Wisconsin
11/27 - at Ohio State
Their best shot at seven wins is to also take out Illinois. Penn State is a bit weaker than anticipated this year, so maybe that's how they get to win #8, but it's in Happy Valley, so maybe not. With their terrible defense, they will not beat MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, or tOSU. (35 points to Indiana? 37 to UMass?)
I'm seeing a 5-0 start leading to a 6-6 finish (7-5 at best), and a minor December bowl (assuming the NCAA lets them go to one ... I haven't been paying attention to the violations brouhaha).
This weekend's game will go a long way to telling how Michigan is going to do. If State's defense cannont slow down the Michigan offense, I doubt any Big Ten defense (with the exceptions of Iowa and tOSU) stops them. And if Michigan's defense somehow is able to stop State's rushing game, they might have a chance at winning some games down the road as well . . . after all, IU has the best passing offense of all of the Big Ten teams. Michigan's defense should do better against more traditional power running teams. If Robinson stays healthy, and the defense can hold the opposing teams to 21 to 27 points, Michigan should win at least 8, maybe 9 games this year.

That photo is amazing.
Now this is an amazing photo!
The Ohio Bobcats are now my second favorite team!
edit: The mascot planned the attack!!!!
"It was actually my whole plan to tackle Brutus when I tried out to be mascot," said Brandon Hanning, formerly known as Ohio University's Rufus Bobcat. "I tried out about a year ago, and the whole reason I tried out was so I could come up here to Ohio State and tackle Brutus."I wonder if this kid has any eligibilty left, the Wolverine defense could use someone who can tackle!
GO BLUE!!!! BEAT BOWLING GREEN!!!!

I bought one for my 8 year old niece. When I asked her what she wanted for Christmas, she said a Toys R Us gift card. I asked her if she had something in mind and I might get it for her. She said she did have something in mind, but would have more fun going shopping with her mom and buying it herself. So, being the best uncle ever (her words, not mine) I bought her a gift card.
