  1. Many a great player has been passed over by their national team at some point or another in their careers. How many can you point at that then jumped across the border and said, 'Hey, pick me!'

    Dirty rotten traitor.

He's also one of the most annoying hockey analysts I've ever been subjected to on television.

  2. Yeah, and no one's gonna argue about any of the inductees this year. With the exception of Robitaille, perhaps...

And say what you will about Hull statistically, the guy will always be a traitor in my mind since his defection to the States.

  3. Yeah, fair enough about Wellwood. I wouldn't say that he has been playing poorly, just that I expected a bit more from him...thought for sure that he would make a fairly sizeable splash in his first playoff series, and although that isn't evident on the scoresheet yet, he's definitely having an impact elsewhere. His play has definitely been of a higher quality over the last 12-15 games, certainly.

  4. Can't help but feel like the Nucks stole a game last nite. Not to say they played horribly, by any stretch, but it felt like a steal, especially with all that powerplay time the Blues had. But yeah, they've had close to five minutes of 5-on-3 time so far this series and not a single goal to show for it? Pretty poor in their part.

Interesting series so far. There are a few guys on the roster who I didn't expect much from and have stepped up big time (Bernier, Raymond and Salo, mainly); guys I expected to play well who have met expectations (Johnson); and a couple guys who I expected a lot from but haven't done a whole lot so far (Demitra against his former squad, Wellwood). Speaking of expectations, being the realistic fan that I am, I certainly didn't expect the Canucks to have a 3-0 series lead, especially considering how they've never done that before in franchise history. Would love to see them pull off the sweep tomorrow, but the Blues are obviously going to be fired up--they have to be.

Never thought I'd be cheering for the Ducks, but yeah, if they can make quick work of the Sharks, that would be great. Then we can let them hammer on the Red Wings for a series so by the time we reach them in the Conference Finals, they'll be really banged up. Here's hoping.

  5. Read an interesting theory somewhere earlier today (can't remember where) that maybe it's Jughead that lies in the shadow of the statue, and maybe Ilana, Bram, et al. are on the island to detonate the hydrogen bomb.

Not sure if that makes any sense whatsoever, but it's certainly intriguing.

  6. k, listened to this twice now while preoccupied doing other stuff, and half of one of those listens was on the bus. so, all that taken into account, i haven't given it the full attention it deserves.

but what i heard still sounded fantastic.

more thoughts after i give it a proper run-thru tonite.

  7. downloading this now, very excited. actually had Some Cities blaring this morning as I was making breakfast...I lost that CD a few years ago and only just got it back in the last month, and I'm enjoying it way more now than I did back when it was originally released. High expectations for this one, and especially excited because I'll be seeing them live in May...

  8. Songs for a Blue Guitar is the best place to start, I think. It's the closest to his Sun Kil Moon material, and maybe the most consistent of his RHP releases, although that's highly debatable. anyway, that's where i'd turn to first.

  9. I think she was in season 3 when Julliet was in trouble with the others for helping Jack. She was sort of an enforcer/sheriff for the others

i don't think that's the same person. could be, though...that was from the early part of S3 that i don't remember very well.

  10. ironically, a common complaint i heard about Ghosts was that many people didn't really like the heavier songs on there (Lily & Parrots, Salvador Sanchez, etc.), and this record, save for Tonight The Sky and the end of Lost Verses, has even less of the heavy bits than Ghosts.

I'm a huge fan of "Salvador Sanchez," but "Lily & Parrots" is probably one of the weaker tracks on the album. It serves its role by anchoring the back half with the obligatory rocker, but still...doesn't do a whole lot for me.

And Solace, I agree, Ghosts is in my top 5 of this decade.

  11. hmm. ok, yeah. i guess i can get behind that.

this thread inspired me to put the record on. "Moorestown" is just heartbreaking.

anyway, i'm always kinda surprised by the lack of discussion kozelek gets around these parts. when April first came out, there were a few posts and then things fizzled out not too long after that. i do think it's quite impressive that, considering how long he's been making music for, that he's still creating some of his best material now.

did anyone get his book that came out this year? the limited release with all his lyrics? worth it?

  12. Duk Koo Kim>>>>Heron Blue

"Duk Koo Kim" really feels like the centrepiece of Ghosts, and I certainly can't say the same for "Heron Blue." If anything, I'd call "Tonight the Sky" or "...Bilbao" the centrepiece of this one. I think what bugs me the most about "Heron Blue" is that Kozelek seems to be deliberately singing in a really low octave, and it comes off sounding (to me, at least) as unintentionally hilarious. Which really doesn't work considering its lyrical content.

  13. ok, i'll play here. outside of the obvious favourites--namely "Lost Verses," "Moorestown," and "Tonight the Sky"--I found this to be pretty disappointing when I first head it last March. It was a real struggle for me to make it through the album without my attention waning, and I kinda shelved it for a bit, mainly because it's not exactly a summer disc. But I came back to Kozelek hard starting in late September/early October and this just seemed so much more...full. It was as if the record needed a gestation period for it to properly come to life, or maybe I just needed time to shift my expectations as to what this record was going to be, because Ghosts of the Great Highway it is not. After eight months or so, the songs that I've come to like a lot are the shorter ones like "Unlit Hallways" and "Harper Road." Songs that aren't doing it? "Heron Blue" and the last track, which I can't even remember the name of and is an extremely weak closing song. Despite all that, when I wrote my best of 08 list last night, this ended up in the #4 slot. So, there you go. "Lost Verses" is without a doubt in my top 5 songs of the year. Those Ben Gibbard backing vocals in the chorus and then that outro...damn. Get me every time.

My introduction to Kozelek's material came thru Ghosts, and my fave RHP disc is probably Songs for a Blue Guitar, although Rollercoaster is fantastic as well.

From Tiny Cities, there's about four or five pretty good covers. "Neverending Math Question," "Space Travel is Boring," "Trucker's Atlas" and "Ocean Breathes Salty." The rest are pretty much completely disposable.

  14. The priest just kinda laughed,

    the deacon caught a draft,

she crashed into the Easter mass

with her hair done up in broken glass.

She was limping left on broken heels

    and she said, "Father,

    can I tell your congregation

    how a resurrection really feels?"

    for the win.

  15. yeah, Cryptograms was one of those albums that I always wanted to like but could never really get into. Oddly enough, my favourite track off of it is "White Ink," one of the more ambient soundscape tracks. The more 'proper' songs never really grabbed me.

I'm not having that problem with Microcastle so far. Granted, I've only given it about five listens so far, but it's much more immediate and it stays with you longer afterwards. And yeah, it doesn't really feel like the band has sacrificed too much of their signature sound to get to this point, only tweaked it somewhat. I still have yet to hear the Fluorescent Grey EP, but my understanding is that it's kind of the halfway-point between the two albums. (Don't quote me on that, though...)

All I know is that there are two or three songs on Microcastle that are distinct contenders for song of the year, and I definitely couldn't say the same for Cryptograms. This disc will probably finish in the year's top 5 for me.
