  1. This sounds about right for the intro lick

    Riff

    E----------------------------------------
    G----------------------------------------
    B----------------------------------------
    D----0----------------------------------
    A------3-2---0h2--3-3--2--0--0h2p0-
    E--3-------------------------------------

Play that a couple times, then this:

    E---------------------------------------------------
    G----------------------------------------------------------
    B----------------------------------------------------------
    D----0----------------------------------------------------
    A------3-2----0h2---3-2-0-------------------------------
    E--3---------------------------2-3------------------------

  2. not just you, man. it's never sounded quite right to me either. i think the Em is right, but that Fm seems off. i've tried pretty much everything other chord there it can't find the right one. my guess is it's some variation of an F or Fm though.

The Fm should be a Dm7, and the Em should be a Dm6.

  3. Buying a guitar is an extremely personal purchase. There's no way to tell you which brand/model would be the best for you. The best thing to do is to go to the store, and see which guitar fits your hands/body best, find which one "speaks" to you. Since you're a beginner, it might be tougher to find exactly what you want, so you might want to consider holding off until you're a little bit more advanced?

That being said, there's tons of great guitars out there for beginners. Don't be afraid to spend a little bit more on a slightly higher quality instrument. It'll make it easier to learn :).

  4. Think of it this way: potentially, you're trading your AJ for a guitar that's worth more, but doesn't have the mojo. You could then turn around and sell the Jazzmaster, and make yourself a decent sized profit. But what then? Money comes and goes, but truly great guitars come around very rarely. Your guitar is obviously great, because your friend is willing to give up a guitar that's worth considerably more for it.

Stick with the AJ. That's my take.

  5. Your position is just plain selfish. You're disrespecting the tapers who bring us these recordings just because you don't want to deal with the minor inconvenience of downloading larger files and ripping them to your preferred format. Keep disrespecting them, and they'll stop providing you with the free stuff you so thoughtlessly abuse.

    In other words, STFU.

I don't mean any disrespect to the people who do the hard work of taping, transcoding, uploading, etc. Some of my favorite people are tapers. To any of you people who contribute something valuable to the community, I apologize, as it is impossible to express some things correctly on a message board.

To any of you who give attitude to people just because they upload something as MP3, my statement of STFU stands. Anyone who has a attitude towards someone just because they prefer to download their shows as MP3s really needs to check their priorities. I've seen it many times on this board, and it's a downright vicious attitude to have towards someone just because they aren't a member of the underground taping community.

For the record, I am a technology whiz, and have no real problems jumping the hurdles of FLAC, torrents, etc. For some people, however, these are insurmountable, and I see no reason why these people should be shunned or otherwise cast into the underworld of B&Ps.

  6. I enjoy listening to MP3s from these boards here at work. I listen through a broken pair of crappy ear buds. Sound fidelity means nothing to me. Not having to wait for a massive FLAC file to download, not having to deal with getting a log in for a restricted to 10,000 logins torrent site, and not having to deal with actually downloading torrents are all huge perks. The one-click convenience of MP3s posted to a blog is excellent.

If you're concerned about sound fidelity, please stick to the torrent trading sites and STFU.

  7. A while ago I posted about getting a Tele. I just wanted to give you guys an update as to what I've done so far. First, some pics:

Mods: Vintage 3 Saddle bridge from a Classic 50s Telecaster

Allparts Fat Neck w/custom cut bone nut

    Kluson-style GOTOH tuners

Highway One control plate, pots, and wiring

    Elecrosocket with new Switchcraft jack

    Fender SCN pickups

    black eBay pickguard

It's originally a 2004ish Mexican made Tele. Now, pretty much the only thing original left are the body and the strap buttons.

The guitar feels like a whole different animal. I'm finally happy with it, I don't plan on doing any more mods. Although, looking back, with all the money/time I've spent on doing these mods, I think it would have been better if I had just bought a Highway One Tele like my first instinct was.

  8. Okay, so I've narrowed it down to two options for the meantime:

    1) going with a power boost like the MXR Micro Amo; or

    2) getting a little Fender Champ for recording purposes (I'm leaning toward this option)

I've got a nice little coupon for Musician's Friend due to a little warehouse mix-up that took place over the summer that I can use before the end of February, so it would make either option relatively inexpensive. So, does anyone have any experience with the Champ? At the low price, I may even be willing to try modding it eventually (for example, Torres sells a tube rectifier kit). Or should I spend the extra money for a Pro, Jr.? Truthfully, the 5W output of the Champ appeals to me as a recording amp that can be overdriven at low volumes. Anyway, let the discussion continue.

The Champ will probably suit you better than the PJR, I think. The PJR gets pretty damn loud, and the Champ sounds almost as good.

  9. I use the Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail, and I haven't found it to be "unbearably" noisy (well, not normally -- sometimes it acts up a little), but it's certainly not as nice as having reverb built into the amp.

Regarding your Macht 12: what type of speaker does yours have? Color? (just curious). Anyway, it sounds like a great amp, but given its fairly steep price, I may just keep saving a little longer and go after a Swart Atomic Space Tone. Even though the 6W cut is a nice feature on the Macht, I think I could probably still get the 15W Swart to break up at volumes my home studio could handle. Oh well, these are just pipe dreams for the time being. If using some kind of signal boost doesn't get the desired results, I may have to get a Blues, Jr. or something for the meantime. I should probably search the previous posts for discussions about good, low-priced 12-15W tube amps.

The Fender Pro Jr. is like sex covered chocolate when it comes to amps that break up nicely at lower volumes.

  10. Here's the whistling solo, tabbed out for guitar:

    E
    e--10-10-7-10------7---7---7------------------------------------------------------------
    B--------------------10--10---------10--7--10--------7-----7--7----------------------
    G-----------------------------------------------------9---------7-------------------

  11. Here's some notes I had on an old piece of paper (don't know how accurate this is)

    e-----------------------
    B----0--1-1-1--0------
    G--2----------------2--
    D-----------------------
    A-----------------------
    E-----------------------

  12. Well, judging from the video, it looks like he spends most of his time playing something above the 12th fret. It doesn't look like he's actually following the chords in the some, so much as making a "sonic landscape" for the rest of the instruments or somesuch.

I'm assuming you're going to try this out on solo guitar. Try strumming along to the song using A, C#m, F#m, and E. Listen to the bassist for the changes.
