  1. I have the PX100s, which at least this guy seems to prefer to the 200s and 250s. I cant vouch b/c I havent tried the other 2, but I can say the 100s are an incredible product for the price (although not noise canceling).

That guy is wrong. Under his recommendation (or some similar one) I bought the PX100s. Big mistake. They felt cheap, and didn't sound all that great. I returned them, got the PX200s, and have been more than happy with them.

  2. Well, I'm no expert, but think of what the folks that invented jazz played on: hollow body guitar with tube amps. The kind of warmth that a nice tube amp brings is not something that's easily replicated with pedals or pickups.

In the end, what matters most is what feels good/sounds right to you. Take your Strat, mess around with the tone/pickup/volume settings, take the guitar to a guitar store, and play around on amps/guitar until you find something that feels right, and fits your budget.

Thanks for all the tips! Strangely enough, I had a chance to really play with the amp this morning, and I actually picked up on a lot of the same tricks you're describing here.

I thought everything sounded great, and I was able to get some really diverse sounds out of it by varying the way that I play.

The one thing that I noticed is that when I turn the tone all the way down on the guitar and/or the ampe, it sounds like a bag of shit, especially on open major chords.

Overall, I can get a lot of great tones out of this thing, I've even found I can get a decently clean sound by turning the tone all the way up, and the volume at half on the guitar.

  4. can anyone help me with the intro to this song? how does jeff play the intro solo?

    here's an mp3

what he's playing seems way more lively than just E and A

I think he plays this walk up:

    E--0--2--4

And then an A chord, and a B7:

    e--2

    B--4

    G--2

    D--4

    A--2

    E--x

And then an E, and then the walk up again.

You can arpeggiated those two chords for a cool effect as well.

  5. Well, that's good to hear, thanks guys!

This is my first tube amp, so everything is new to me.

Here's what I like about it so far:

    1) Fantastic incredible warm tone

    2) Looks great

    3) Easy to use and simple (two knobs!)

    Here's what's bothering me:

I don't know much about tube amps, but from what I understand, at a certain point in volume, this amp is supposed to break up and distort. Which is fine, it sounds great. However, there seems to be very very little headroom with this. For example, even with the volume at 3 I start to hear some break up. Is this normal?

This amp seems very sensitive to high quality cables. The type of cable makes a huge difference. The cheap $5 cable I used had a horrible crackling at higher volumes. The nicer Fender cable I used kept cutting out for no reason. The decent $20 Monster Cable doesn't seem to have any real problems. I just found this interesting, and am wondering if others have had the same experience?

  6. I'm glad somebody likes it. I guess I am always glued to Clouds Taste Metallic and Soft Bulletin. Yoshimi seemed fun but gets old quick and Mystics seemed like they were at the end of their rope. Honestly you're the first person I've encountered who enjoyed it........at least someone does.

I liked Mystics a lot, so I guess that's two. Honestly, though, if you don't like it don't listen to it.

  7. That Tele can take any kind of set you put on it, but if you go much higher you may need to tighten up the truss rod a touch (as outlined in that Fender link earlier). Try a set of 10s - the neck will barely feel the difference, but you'll notice a nice bump in the sound. At least you'll be able to feel the strings under your fingers. :thumbup

    Thanks, I will try that!

  8. OK, after doing some research, I've come to the conclusion don't have any problems with the C-shaped neck at all. That part of the next doesn't really make a difference for me, it doesn't even come into serious consideration, I think I'd be fine with any reasonable shape. However, I do prefer the wider nut width (am I using this term correctly?) on the Highway 1 teles.

Sigh, I'm really tempted to just sell this guitar, and get a highway 1. It's the one I lust after.

Besides that, I'll bet part of the buzz problem is the 9's - that's way too light of a gauge, especially for that type of neck (probably contributes to the intonation problem as well).

Ah, I see. The 9s are a little squiggly under my fingers as well, I'm used to bigger gauges. Do you recommend 10s or 11s for this type of neck?

Sucks that I just paid to get it setup with 9s. I don't really want to pay again. But, at this point (after watching the tech do it, and having him do the major work), I'm guessing I could get it decent myself.

Feh, I just want to get home and play the damn thing some more.
