  1. I'm thankful for the Nazis. Without Hitler, we wouldn't have all those awesome WWII movies.
  2. Va Savoir / Jacques Rivette / France / 2001
  3. I scored 100%. There was a dead giveaway for most: the quotes with sophisticated language or complex grammatical structures were Hitler's. No surprise.
  4. I've only been listening for the last couple of hours, so I wouldn't hazard a ranking... but I'm with ya about the bongos. Sad indeed. It's a new sound for them, but I expect it will grow on me considerably (I'm definitely digging "The Captain"). Seeing them at Summerfest in 2-3 weeks.
  5. Not sure where I'd place it in relation to Lost and Gone Forever and Keep It Together, but I too am finding this very enjoyable.
  6. Gates of Heaven, yes. That's a good one, too. The only Morris films that I really didn't care for are Vernon, Florida and Fast, Cheap & Out of Control, although both have merits.
  7. I admired The Fog of War a great deal, but my favorite Errol Morris movies are probably Mr. Death and The Thin Blue Line... check those out if you haven't already. Also worth seeing is his short-lived TV series called "First Person," which is now available on DVD. Some of those episodes rank among Morris' most incisive work, I think.
  8. Film snobs sometimes seem more interested in being associated with the baggage attached to certain movies rather than the works themselves. A true student of film ought to be egalitarian in their tastes, willing to dive into so-called "elitist" art, but equally willing to consider the pleasures of so-called "lesser" forms and genres. Biases just get in the way of the fun, at least in my experience. Anyway... I watched and enjoyed this today:
  9. Two horror movies with wolf in the title. Am I bad film lover if I confess I preferred the Australian gorefest over Ingmar Bergman's portrait of a descent into madness?
  10. Not top-of-the-line Altman, but I still had a blast hanging out with these particular characters for a couple of hours.
  11. I agree--the performance Daniels gives is one of my favorites from last year. I also enjoyed the way the script is deeply resistant to "story," aiming instead for an impressionistic portrait of domestic discord, focusing on how the failings of these two parents trickle down into the lives of their kids (never worse than when the kids are used as pawns in the separation game). Good call on Grizzly Man, too.
  12. Thanks Rob! Like everybody else here, I find wilcobase invaluable, and essential.
  13. Collection of 10 sound short films... not quite at the level of Keaton's silent stuff, but still worthwhile.
  14. Dearest Wendy, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It doesn't compare to actually being there, but hearing "Radio King" through the telephone is certainly one of my favorite phone calls ever. Congrats to everyone who was able to attend this show... the set list is spectacular. Eric
  15. The JHamm DVD Project Plenty of people around here would be willing to trade or B&P for these. I would offer to do it myself, except I'm in the process of buying/selling a home, and I can't guarantee I'll have the compy set up (nor time for it). Eric
  16. That's what I said. She conceded that Neko's voice is superior, but observed that Lewis' style and sound is more personally appealing to her.
  17. I was surprised to have the same reaction. Speaking of the new album, does anyone else love this use of rapid internal rhyme in "That Teenage Feeling": "I don't care if forever never comes..."? I had heard some Martha previously, so I knew what to expect. Like you, I found her pleasant, talented, vibrant, but not exactly my cup of tea. I enjoyed her set, but I heard nothing that would inspire me to buy her stuff. I sorta dragged my wife along to Neko, with the promise that she would really enjoy it. She did like it, but on the way out her first observation was "I liked Jenny Lewis mo
  18. She was suffering from a cold, but was in good spirits and still sounded otherworldly. I was a little bummed that she skipped "A Widow's Toast" and "Margaret Vs. Pauline" from the new album, but if cutting those was necessary for me to hear perfect versions of "I Wish I Was the Moon" and "Deep Red Bells," then so be it. Side note: The preshow music included "Shot In the Arm" and "I Got You" back-to-back.
  19. I think I've figured out most of the who-is-who, but a few still elude me. I think I'm gonna have to start keeping a chart.
  20. Interesting. I spent most of this weekend researching this very subject as part of my graduate studies.
