Living out West has infected me. I am a slave of the advertisements and the shameless style of spending money. I have a good car, yet I want a separate car, of a different shape, for those times when I feel a different way about myself. I even want a third car, of a third shape, for a time in my future, that I should hope for, when I feel a third way about myself. And oh the colas. They are never content with their colas. They add cherry, and vanilla, and then coffee flavor, and they take away the sugar, like a magician pulling away the tablecloth, and change the logo artwork, and keep you eve

Many branches of the US military and intelligence agencies had been convinced that torture was a bad idea heretofore. Why? Because it produces bad information. -
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060919/ap_on_.../kerry_religion MALIBU, Calif. - Democratic Sen. John Kerry on Monday urged people of faith to work cooperatively on problems such as poverty, global warming and reducing the number of abortions

Kerry and Sampson. Kerry, like my other mixed chow, Maya, is also camera shy and typically looks down ashamedly when a camera is pointed in his direction. Kerry mostly tolerates the cats, though he plays with them on occasion. The other day, Sampson got out and was mewing, unnoticed by humans, from under a concrete slab outside. Kerry got very worked up and was running around the house, concerned. A very "Timmy fell in the well" moment. He did something similar the last time Sampson got out. -
For some reason, this made me track down a couple quotes from I Heard the Owl Call My Name, a book I wish I still owned. "There's a good bit of agnostic in all of us...None of us knows much--only enough to trust to reach out in the dark." 'There are two kinds of naivete: one not aware of the problems, and another which has knocked on all the doors of knowledge and knows man can explain little, and is still willing to follow his convictions into the unknown.' - Albert Schweitzer I can see the appeal of shunning organized religion. However, I think this often removes the community aspect o

I think, all and all, it's a fair question to ask. Sure, people have strong opinions on it, but does that mean it can't be talked about?

Religion can help spur tribal and ideological conflict. Modernity has been a balm on that. Most places where religion causes the most conflict are in a lurch between the feudal system and modernity (think Afghanistan). Of course, modernity, itself, claimed its own victims (French revolution, USSR, Nazi Germany, etc) as people have tried to force new, thought out but untested forms of government on the world.

The White Sox are in their death throes. Hopefully the ninth inning marks a transition for 2007. Josh Fields hit a homerun in his first major league at-bat. Scott Podsednik hit a grounder up the middle and dogged it going to first. Fields should be patrolling LF next year if he can hack it in winter ball. -

The baseball gods intervened for the White Sox in the first inning of the game. I hope it has some inspirational effect.
