So it is embarrassing. I love this song and have the album it is on, but had to ask the artist, ‘what was that second last song?’ ‘The strummy one?' ‘Yeah that one’

  2. Just so so proud of my province

    - some dude hung around the tourbus all day in Kingston

    - the guy in London who felt he had to sing along, off key and a half beat behind - loudly

    - the London punk band who HAD to sound check during an extremely quiet show.

we as a people are extremely rude and creepy. Just finding this out now.

and if you happen to read this and was involved in one of these shining examples of fandom and concert promotion, seriously, fuck off and get a life.

  3. Had no idea there was a Sam Parton and Jolie Holland new disc out.

Was also equally clueless that they are playing the Rivoli tonight until about half an hour ago.

I finally get to see Holland (and Parton)

Best concert  -  Eric Bachman Living Room Tour.  Hollee fucking hell it was great.

  5. saw one of the stops on the tour. They had a large stage, and I've seen them when they keep yards away from each other for the whole show, but this was really different; They played in about 100 sq feet, as if they there back on some black painted rock club. What a tremendous night.

This is my favourite tribute - from Dave Bidini

'Every band exists with the end perched on their shoulder; more of a black crow than a brightly-plumed parrot. Most bands end while roasting hot dogs over a barrel-fire in the back of a 7-11. In Canada, the legion of forgotten bands would swallow the legion of those remembered, which is why these last few weeks have been so great: it’s been our chance to believe that music actually matters to us in this country. Only a handful of times in our history has a single event drawn us together. Many of them happened on American television, so they don’t count. The obvious comparison is the 1972 Canada-Russia series, partly because the Hip wrote a great song about it, Fireworks, and partly because it echoes one of my favourite Gord Downie quotes, which came after announcers on Boston radio equalled the attention surrounding the Henderson goal to the JFK assassination:

“Ya, but in our case, no one had to die.”

    Freakin’ eh.'

  6. I'm insanely jealous about the hip show! No shows within 6 hours of me I'm

In NJ. Tried for a Kingston ticket with no luck. I'd spend up to $200 and go by myself if I have to but lowest I see is $400 behind the stage :( enjoy tonight please post a review

Sorry you did not get to see it. Great show - and pretty well the saddest concert I have ever been to.

  7. Sturgill Simpson last Friday - Amazing show with i think the Budos band backing him.

    Tragically Hip tonight.

i may be overcome with sadness,

Wednesday - Doug Paisley at the Cameron

Friday - Luther Wright and Tara Dunphy

Hopefully the sadness will be dealt with by more live music

  8. way to go again Kalle!

'Some exciting news came out of Toronto today for one Sault-born musician.

It was announced during this morning's JUNO Nominee Press Conference that Kalle Mattson's video for Avalanche has been nominated for Video of the Year.

“It’s a big deal and it feels good,” Mattson told SooToday this morning from the press conference.

“You never know with videos. Sometimes you think they’re great and then they just don’t catch on. It’s not a sure thing at all. But this one seems to have done alright.”

Directed by Philip Sportel and produced by Matt Power for Mad Ruk Entertainment, the video features Mattson recreating a series of album covers as an homage to the music and artists that he says have influenced his work.

The JUNO Award nominated video illustrates the title track from Mattson's 2015 EP which was released last summer.

Mattson said he's halfway into writing a new full-length release and will be working once again with Avalanche producer Colin Munroe.

“I’m excited to go further with it now that we have a working idea of how to work together," Mattson said of Munroe. "I’ve recorded every one of my records very differently, and now we sort of have a basis to go off of which is really cool.”

It was also announced today that Mattson will join Jason Collett and Zeus on a cross-Canada tour starting April 19, 2016.

Other JUNO Award nominees and/or winners with Sault Ste. Marie ties include Treble Charger (five nominations between 1997 and 2003), Crystal Shawanda (three nominations including one win for Aboriginal Album of the Year in 2013), and Woods of Ypres (award win in 2013 for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year).
