tab request for the new old song jeff played recently

Recommended Posts

So I've been working on this song a bit. It's in open G, and the progression is all I - IV -V stuff (i.e. G-C-D). The basic lick is (my interpretation):

(open G tuning -lots of hand-heel muting)

G rhythym thing

0-0-0-0h2-3-X --> 0-0-0-2p0-3-X

C is:

0-0-2-0-1-X

D is:

2-2-4-2-3-X

for the verse, it's:

[G] That's the thanks that I get [C] for loving you[G]

[G] That's the thanks that I get [C] for telling you the [G] truth

[C] You say you wanna [D] know

[G] Well I go and I go [C]

General idea... please contribute, I'm still just working this out... the run up for (falsetto) 'I think we're both crazy' is pretty easy once you play the C-D part, too lazy to tab right now till I have it all figured out. Play the 'solo' along with him the figure the scale, it's G-minor pentatonic. Nice bluesy/soul feeling, he plays the muting in a funky way... practice that part (I still am!) A friend said this is her favorite Wilco/Tweedy song she's heard me play, and I still fuck it up here and there as I'm figuring it out.

I just composed a long response with tab, and the @#$%# server puked on me and lost everything. I dont want to write it all again, but I just wanted to say I play this in the key of D using drop D tuning and it sounds pretty good to me (I'm using the Abbey recording as a guide)

You know jhc, I agree and I think I ended up playing it in G more or less accidentally late at night. Dropped D for key of D (D - A - G for I - IV - V) sounds much more like the recording. I'm a little hectic to write a whole tab right now I wish you luck, I'm curious what you'll put up for the nice little run up, maybe I'll tab it out when I have more time.

I agree. I just play it in Drop-D. I think the little riff Jeff does revolves around a d chord and using your pinky on the 4th string and walking it down 4-2-0. Jeff then barres the other chords with just the three lowest strings to get that muted sound, I belive.

OK, second try - this is still pretty rougg, and from memory so there will probably be an error or 10...

D riff - I've been faking it, but I think some combination of what you have as "G rhythm thing" and abuharabi's riff is going to be the right one -

[D] Is that the thanks that I get [G] for loving you[D]

[D] Is that the thanks that I get [G] for telling you the [D] truth

[G] You say you wanna [A] know

[G] Where I go when I go [A] (I think this is the correct lyric here)

[G] You say you want to [A] communicate

walk up:

e------

b-2-3-5-7-8--9--12-14

g-0-0-0-0-0--0--0--0-

d-2-4-5-7-9-11--12-14

a-------

d-------

-------------But you don't hear a word I [G] say

[D] Is that the thanks I [G] get for loving you

[D] Well I'm tired of the looks I [G] get when I come [D] home late

[D] And I'm getting tired of how you [G] forget the lovin' [D] things I say

[G] I hold you [A] tight

[G] Treat you [A] right

[G] I don't [A] ever want to fight again

(walk up)

I think we're both crazy [G]

[D] Is that the thanks I [G] get for loving you

bridge part - I'm not too clear on this part at all

Faith, trust, ???? lust... that's OK but you must belive in our [A] love...oohhh

[D] We can make it better

[G] We can make it better

[D] We can make it better

[G] Pull ourselves together and [D]start it again

(Here I'm playing these as a blues shuff rhythm):

----D---------G

e-------------------

b-------------------

g-------------------

d-0-0-0-----5-5-5

a-0-2-0-----5-7-5

d-0-0-0-----5-5-5

solo - ( I have an idea of what he's playing but it's not definitve)

e----------------------------------

b------3-5-3-0-------------------

g-2s4----------------------------- then "D riff" - repeat whole thing once

d----------------5-5--5-5--5-5---

a----------------5-5--7-5--5-7---

d----------------5-5--5-5--5-5---

[D] I hold you [G] tight

[D] Tuck me in at [G] night

[G] I don't [A] ever want to fight again

(walk up)

I think we're both crazy [G]

[D] That's the thanks we [G] get for falling in [D] love

[D] We can make it better

[G] We can make it better

[D] We can make it better

[G] We can make it better

[D] We can make it better

[G] Pull ourselves together and [D]start it again

excellent work jhc. I second the motion with the bluesy stuff on the chords. I'll add what I can add...

Over the "you say you wanna know, where I go when I go" part, I (in drop D) swear I hear Jeff drop down lower the second and third time: (same for "hold you tight, treat you right" part, etc.)

G(555xxx) A(777xxx) E(222xxx)

(G)you say you wanna (A)know

(E)where I go when I (G) go

(E) you say you wanna communicate (G)...walk up(nice job on walk up jhc)

"Faith, trust" part...I hear a B (999xxx) in there somewhere (but where...?)

"we can make it better" melody (d(4th)--4-4--2-0-2-0)

solo:

D chord[xx0232] (on G string 2-h-4--2)

A chord (--5-h-7--5-h-7--5)

back to D chord (2--2-h-4--2)-->4 on D string

-->same A progression (I think)

I hope this helps and doesn't just add confusion.....

P.S. I can only hope the rest of the forthcoming album is as awesome as I feel this song is.
