Groo
You'd think that there would be a tab floating somewhere out there for a song like this. I heard Tweedy play this at Otto's, it was the best thing I heard all night. I was hoping it was a new song, but it wasn't. I guess Tweedy is just really good at covering old songs. Anyway, does anyone think they can transcribe this? I'd love to learn it.
WrigleyDog
I asked about this one a while back and never got a response...it's an old Doc Boggs song and I searched around and couldn't find anything for a tab from either Tweedy or an old Boggs version...I can't even figure out what key it's in...(sounds odd to me)...anyway, if you find out anything, I'd appreciate it if you post about it... Groo
Found this on a banjo website (in relation to tunings): gDGCD "G-modal", "Mountain Minor", "Sawmill" One of the most common banjo tunings for tunes in Dorian & Aeolian modal scales. E.g. Cluck Old Hen; Pretty Polly; Shady Grove; Little Sadie; The Cuckoo; East Virginia. Also sometimes used for D-centered tunes: e.g. Dock Boggs, Sugar Baby ("Dock Boggs: 12 Original Recordings"; "Dock Boggs, Vol 2"). Heath Curdts, Boll Weevil ("A Tribute to Tommy Jarrell") Curdts says that Jarrell used it for Chilly Winds. In BNL, Dec 1988, Ken Perlman discussed the use of this tuning for playing in B-flat and E-flat. "http://zeppmusic.com/banjo/aktuning.htm
ginandcigarettes
Anyway, does anyone think they can transcribe this? I'd love to learn it. I would guess that most of us just haven't heard the song. If you YSI an MP3, I can take a crack in the next few days.

ginandcigarettes
Interestingly enough, I quit smoking almost two years ago and I don't really like gin. I've recently become obsessed with the dirty charm of vanilla vodka and Coke, however. The last time I was underneath a table it was sangria. Before that, Stoli Vanilla and Dr. Pepper. I like the sweet stuff.
WrigleyDog
Wow...that's fantastic...I could swear that when I hear this song it sounds its at least in drop D tuning...anyway you're right, the timing is hard to get down...but thanks alot...I'll buy ya the next stoli and dr. pepper
ginandcigarettes
Thanks! Yeah, this song is actually hard to get down and I consider myself moderately okay at this Carter-style (?) picking stuff. The problem I find is getting up to the B string for the sixteenth notes in time and then just playing the B string. Oh well, practice, practice, practice.
froggie
bump... is this the way jeff has been playing it lately on his solo tours?. i was watching a dvd from 2005 and it seems he was mainly on an A chord with a lot of hammering with his middle finger

I figured it all out last night and he's on the d chord hammering with his middle finger, capo on second fret, drop d. I'll tab it out this weekend if I have time, but just mess with that. Oh yeah, you're right, Drop D capo 2 is much easier. Thanks, socbret. It also exposes an error that I made in the original tab. Luckily the tab tansfers over so easily: 1..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--------3--3--------3--3--------------|A--------2-----------2-----------2-----------------|E--------------------------0-h3--------0-----------|B--------------0-h3--------------------------3-----|E--0-h3--------------------------------------------| 2..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--3--3--3--3--------3--3--3--3--------|A--------2-----2-----------------2-----2-----------|E--0-----------------------------------------0-----|B--------------------------------------------------|E--------------------------0-----------------------| 3..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--------3--3--------3--3--------------|A--------2-----------2-----------2-----------------|E--------------------------0-h3--------0-----------|B--------------0-h3--------------------------3-----|E--0-h3--------------------------------------------| 4..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--3--3--3--3--------3--3--3--3--------|A--------2-----2-----------------2-----2-----------|E--0-----------------------------------------0-----|B--------------------------------------------------|E--------------------------0-----------------------| 5..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--------------------------------------|A--------2-----------------------------------------|E--0-----------------0-----0h3---------0-----------|B--------------3-----------------------------3-----|E--------------------------------------------------| 6..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------------------------------3--3--3--3--3--3--|A--------------------------------2-----2-----------|E--0-----------------------------------------------|B--------3-----0-----------------------------------|E--------------------3-----0-----------------------| 7..V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--------3--3--------3--3--------------|A--------2-----------2-----------2-----------------|E--------------------------0-h3--------0-----------|B--------------0-h3--------------------------3-----|E--0-h3--------------------------------------------| 9..V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------|C#-------3--3--3--3--3--3--|A--------2-----2-----------|E--0-----------------------|B--------------------------|E--------------------------| 10.V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--------3--3--------3--3--------------|A--------2-----------2-----------2-----------------|E--------------------------0-h3--------0-----------|B--------------0-h3--------------------------3-----|E--0-h3--------------------------------------------| 11.V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------|C#-------3--3--3--3--3--3--|A--------2-----2-----------|E--0-----------------------|B--------------------------|E--------------------------| You can vamp on something like this: ...V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------3--3--3--3--3--3--------3--3--3--3--3--3--|A--------2--2--2--2--2--2--------2--2--2--2--2--2--|E--------0-----------------------0-----------------|B--------------------------0-----------------------|E--0-----------------------------------------------| Sometimes you play this (I'll rock the cradle when you're gone): ...V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^.....V.....^...... f#-------------------------------------------------|C#-------------------------------------------------|A--------------------------------------------------|E--------------------------------------------------|B--------------------------0-----3-----0-----------|E--0-h3--------3----5------------------------3-----|
blasto2236
Not to detract from the hard work done, but I'm no good with this kind of stuff. Anyone care to convert this to chords??? Pretty please?
