jhc
I've divided this into several sections - hopeully the organization will be obvious note: to make it sound like Nels, a lot of these notes should be done as swells with a volume pedal. Plenty of reverb also helps. There's also a lot of flexibility on whether to slide between two notes or not. note 2: I've tried to match the tab with the approriate chords - I might get some wrong, the tab on the net is pretty awful and not a great reference. Obviously if you're used to playing this capo 5 the chords will look different #1 Intro (over the Dm/Am chords - note this can also be used over the same chords in later verses) e-----------------------------c----------------------------a-15s17s15--15s17s15s12-g-----------------------------e-----------------------------c----------------------------- do this 2x #2 Verse - Dm/Am/Dm/Ame-----------------------c-----------------------a-----------------------g--9s10---s9---9s10--e----------------------c---------------------- #3a Verse F/Gm/Ce------------------c-------------------a-----------------g-15s14-12-12s9-e------------------c------------------- Repeat #2, then #3be-----------------------------c----------------------------a---------------------------g-15s14-12-12s9---7s10--e----------------------------10c---------------------------- #4 Chorus F/C/Dm/Dm#7/Bb/F/C x 2e--------------------------------------------------------------------c--------------------------------------------------------------------a--------------------------------------------------------------------g--10-9-------------------------------10-9s10---------------------e--------10-9-8--5s6s5-------------------------9-8-5s6s5-------c------------------------(7)-(optional)-----------------------7s5- don't play over the "don't cry, you can rely on me honey" line, then come in with #3a Over "I'll be around .... setting sun", play #1 or #2 followed by #3b second chorus, same as the first #5a Bridge ("voice whine") Bb/F/Bb/F/C/Bb e--8s6---8s10s8----8s6---8s10s8-8s13--8s6--8s10s8--c-------5-----------------5----------------------5----------a------------------------------------------------------------g------------------------------------------------------------ e------------------------------------------------------------c------------------------------------------------------------ #5b Bridge (Last cigarette...) e--13s12----------------------------c----------14s13-12----------------a---------------------9s10s9-------g------------------------------10s8- e------------------------------------c------------------------------------ Third verse and chorus are played just like the second For the beginning of the second bridge, you can repeat #5a, but it seems Nels usually just plays something like e--s10--8--s10--8s13--s10----c--s10------s10---------s10----a---------------------------------g---------------------------------e--------------------------------c-------------------------------- then over the first two "last cigarrettes" lines, do this for each line e--13s12----------------------------c----------14s10-12----------------a---------------------9s10s9------- g------------------------------------ e------------------------------------c------------------------------------ Final "last cigarettes" line e--13--13s15s17--17s18---25- (you can slide up the last note or not, a volume swell is recommended here)c--------------------------------a----------------------------------g--------------------------------- e----------------------------------c---------------------------------- Edited May 8, 2006 by jhc

TCP
Very well done! Maybe this weekend I'll go get some strings capable of going to C6. Last night I went to this guitar store that had 3 or 4 vintage lap steels from the 40s... they were so incredible. All reasonably priced as well. They also had a pedal steel! Your right, I can't make this sound right without a volume pedal! Edited May 14, 2006 by Halcyon
