EL the Famous
I like the whole 'hair belt' thing in the first post. I consider it the Astral Weeks of all posts in this thread.
pivoboy
It might be interesting to get a list of records together that we thought were amazing and then turned out to be pop piffle. We have all made cocktail-chatter boasts about how we just bought some new record and ``yeah, it's REALLLLLLY great'' (snort, look smug, reach for peanuts on living-room table). Or took a grandstanding position about some artist that would ``be around forever.'' This would be the anti-Astral Weeks problem - the What the Hell Were You Thinking? Award - when something is really far less than the sum of its parts as it might have looked at first. I myself am guilty of many sins against Pop, including the singular belief that the Alarm had produced a five star album, when in fact, I was really just seduced by fancy packaging. Or that the Stray Cats would ``be around forever'' (snort, look smug, reach for Doritos on table). And don't get me started on my initial reaction to Julian Lennon's first record. As Johnny Cash said, I Hung My Head.
wheelco
did I say the word 'subjective' enough? don't listen to the rest of them -- I still like you, subjectively
viatroy
I suspect that those of us who heard A.M. when it came out tend to appreciate it more. Or am I wrong? My Wilco chronological order goes like this: MAIBTMAIIYHFSTAGIBAMKT I love AM. And there you have it. Im disappointed in your theorizing.

As Johnny Cash said, I Hung My Head. what's the point? every album doesn't have to be astral weeks and should be enjoyed even if it's only enjoyable for a certain period of time. bigger than that, the alarm being a great example, there are albums certain people may still consider 5-star to this day...personal tastes make everything subjective, y'know. the hair belt thing though, that was fucking awesome (snort, look smug, reach for shrunken head on living-room table). bleedorange
Am I the only one that prefers Moondance to Astral Weeks?
caliber66
Nope. I definitely prefer Moondance.
cryptique
Am I the only one that prefers Moondance to Astral Weeks?Hard to say which I prefer, but I might give a slight edge to Astral Weeks. Into the Music could also be my favorite Morrison album ... I just couldn't say.
Spawn's dad
the alarm being a great example as in Mike Peters? That's desert island shit for me
EL the Famous
as in Mike Peters? That's desert island shit for me I don't know if it'd be in my DIDs, but it's still 5-Star listening for me too.
cryptique
It's been a while since I heard much Alarm, but that was pretty good stuff. I remember listening to "68 Guns" and "The Stand" a lot, back in the day. I'm pretty sure I have Strength on vinyl.
Spawn's dad
the cool one is they rereleased the original EP with a bunch of bonus tracks. That had the definitive version of marching on and the stand. They gained popularity after strength but none of those later releases resonated with me the way the EP and first two albums did. I thought they'd be bigger than U2 back then.
Maddie Hope
All I really want are some US tour dates... I second that Walken!! Some southern US dates to sink my teeth into... Seems like it's going to be a long summer waiting for the shows in the states... But atleast by then I'll have SBS
