Sir Stewart
I'm in the camp of thinking that II may be better than the first. I have several reasons. First, I love the development of Vito from average family man/small business owner to someone who is respected (and feared). I think it comes about not only through his killing the Black Hand but his genuine caring (albeit with a clinched fist) about others in his community. I love the changing relationship between Clemenza and Vito. Clemenza's the tough but eventually respects the smarts of Vito. The scene where he gets the piece of fruit for his wife is beautiful and shows such depth in the character. Sitting on the stairs talking to Michael. When he loses his job, but doesn't blame the shopkeeper because he knows what's going on but doesn't say a word. On top of that massive character development is the Hyman Roth saga and Fredo's downfall. I genuinely love all of the movies, including three which I thought gave Michael a sort of crushing humility, but I think its the romance of number two that puts it over for me.Nicely said. Everytime we get pears in our house I say "What a lovely pear!"

Agree except for III. Maybe Sophia should have directed! The soundtrack might have been sweet.
John Smith
I generally don't distiguish between GFI & II. I look at them as one long two part movie, much like the Lord Of the Rings. My all-time favorite movie without question...must be a guy thing because my wife is not partial to the GF movies at all. GFIII? A totally different beast. To me the first scene of the Lake Tahoe compound in ruins is the best scene in the movie. The story is too far fetched and convoluted and it has way too many improbable scenes for me to consider it in the same category as the other two. It was made more to maike money than it was to tell a story. As to comparing GF to other mob movies, Goodfella's and Casino come to mind. I still say that GF is in a class by itsself. It's an epic tale spaning generations. Goodfella's and Casino are both great movies, but for my tastes they both fall far short of the GF.
mfwahl
It may be more of a Scorsese/Coppola thing more than a Godfather/Goodfellas/Casino thing. I personally need both. Can't say one is the better.
