Scalzunfield
This album is awful: their worst lyrically and most unimaginative musically. Absolutely terrible. I liked that mostly bad collection of B-sides better.
Beltmann
This album is awful: their worst lyrically and most unimaginative musically. Absolutely terrible. I liked that mostly bad collection of B-sides better.I too was struck by how forgettable the melodies seem... I've only listened through 3-4 times, so I haven't written it off just yet, but as of now I am deeply disappointed.
chisoxjtrain
to me, the album starts out great with "someone to love" then slowly goes downhill from there. subaru 92 and yolanda hayes are good, but after that a huge drop-off. like my high school trig teacher said, "it seems that they just recycling their music"
Scalzunfield
to me, the album starts out great with "someone to love" then slowly goes downhill from there. subaru 92 and yolanda hayes are good, but after that a huge drop-off. like my high school trig teacher said, "it seems that they just recycling their music" Their songwriting hasn't changed much but the characters just aren't there. There's no "Red Dragon Tattoo," "Joe Rey" or "Bright Future In Sales" here. Nothing that makes me chuckle at the absurdity of the character in the song. I too thought that, while nauseatingly polished production-wise, "Someone To Love" was a good start to the album. But it's a really quick drop off. The problem I have with "Someone To Love" is the arrangement for the song is nearly identical to that of "Mexican Wine," the opener from their last proper album. Calexico
God, there's a lotta hate for the new album. I love it, as I have loved all their albums. They are a band that I never view as serious, young men though: just guys out for a fun rocking time and that's how I receive them. A good time rock and roll band. Nothing wrong with some mindless enjoyment now and then.

A good time rock and roll band. Nothing wrong with some mindless enjoyment now and then.I'd argue that at their best, FoW is more than just guys out for fun; many of their tunes contain witty lyrics, relatively sophisticated characters and imagery, and killer pop melodies. Still, I mostly agree with your sentiment... except, for me, this new album of mindless rocking doesn't provide anywhere near the same level of enjoyment as do their previous albums of mindless rocking. jakobnicholas
I bought the new FOW album a few days ago. The first time through I was a little under-whelmed...not sure why. But after a few listens, it's growing a lot on me and I'd say it's "very good". The music is solid great pop mostly throughout, but it somehow it doesn't have the fantastic music and lyrics combo that I think exists on Utopia Parkway...which I think is their best album. But nothing on the new album stops me from thinking they're still the kings of writing good, catchy pop tunes.
jakobnicholas
OK. This thread appears very dead...but I wanted to post one more time....as I think the new FOW is worthy of a tad more discussion. I'm really diggin' most of the new tunes...only 2 songs would I say are below average. My favorite song at the moment is 'The Hotel Majestic'........hey, hey!
