Wendy
We are talking a bit over in the other forum about Califone's last show of the tour coming up this Saturday in Washington DC ... but I thought just in case some of you east-coasters were not aware of the tail end of this tour, here's a nudge. They are being joined on stage by 3 members of The Bitter Tears (opening band) on horns, and it is really a beautiful addition to the live show. If any of you Wilco fans are lamenting the YHF/O'Rourke sound -- you really should check out Califone. Who loves Califone? Glenn Kotche, since back in the Red Red Meat days, he told me (and LouieB and Renic) at the latest Chicago Hideout show. Figures, though -- two of the four Califone members are percussionists. Check out the thread at the link above for some more details about recent shows. Here's a really well written article/interview from OnMilwaukee.com -- with the exception that she mis-identifies the multi-instrumentalist Jim Becker as Tim Hurley (her bad)http://www.onmilwaukee.com/music/articles/califone.html 06/05/07 - Iron Horse Music Hall Northampton, MA 06/06/07 - Middle East Upstairs Cambridge, MA 06/07/07 - The Gramercy Theatre New York, NY 06/08/07 - Johnny Brenda
owl
Note: Mike Jorgensen also shows up in the credits for a Califone album or two.
deepseacatfish
Califone rules, though I've only heard them on album. I'm planning on seeing them at Pitchfork, though I would've loved to have seen them in a smaller venue. Either way, sweet. But like Wendy said, go see them, you will not regret it, subtle, intricate, and wondrous music.
MattZ
Thanks for the heads up. I will be going on Thursday now. Saw them earlier this year at Southpaw in Brooklyn (first time) and I thought they were great.
willywoody
Thanks for the heads up. I will be going on Thursday now. Saw them earlier this year at Southpaw in Brooklyn (first time) and I thought they were great. wilco's done a great job of turning me on to some bands who open for them: mercury rev, califone and now low. i'll have to wait for pitchfork to catch califone though. they had one of my favorite cds of last year and i went back and got cradlesnakes and it's killer, too. MattZ
I am going tonight. Apparently, the Bitter Tears and Cutis Harvey also perform, and doors are at 7pm. Anyone have any tips on when I should show up?
Wendy
I am going tonight. Apparently, the Bitter Tears and Cutis Harvey also perform, and doors are at 7pm. Anyone have any tips on when I should show up? Califone plays about 2 hours if you nudge them back for an encore (oh, so worth it, too -- 2 or 3 more songs!) I'm not sure who Cutis Harvey is, but I can tell you about The Bitter Tears. They are weird, but funny - folk/pop/bawdy bar-room crazies. They dress up in torn wedding dresses or cut-off shorts or girls' shiny blouses ... kinda Beetlejuicy. So you are forewarned. But they are fun for 45 minutes, and 3 of them clean up nicely when they join Califone on stage to provide a horn section, and that is where it counts, of course. But they are great songwriters and certainly I have heard worse openers in my day. These guys at least make you smile. They are kinda insane, though! What they added to the Califone sound was lush. It was so good I am trying to figure out how I can escape from my responsibilities and go see them again this weekend. Seriously. Live Califone is like crack to me.
