Going to California!

Recommended Posts

Yep.

Hopefully in August I will be going out to California for a few days to visit some friends and see Wilco play.

I am horrible with traveling, because the only travel I have done has been with band on a bus. Only been on a plane 2 times. I have been checking the cheaptickets.com and Orbitz and all that for flights almost daily, and I have found a flight out for $489.09 is that a good rate? I have to switch airline carriers though, so I don't know exactly what that means...

Any help would be appreciated!

(PS: I'm also looking for a place to crash for a night... :monkey )

Hi Sarah!

If the flight is direct, it'll probably be much more than if the flight has one or more stops. Of course, with stops you run the risk of missing connections. So you have to balance that as part of your decision.

Also, I bet if you said where in CA and when, someone would be happy to have you.... just my $.02

Oh yeah, the "when" part is kinda important.

I'm leaving on August 23 and have to come home on the 27... plan on going to the Berkley show and the Santa Barbara shows...

Yep, the flights I have found have all had 2 connections each way... but the layover is about 2 hours, so plenty of time to get to where the next flight is I think... would I have to pick my bags up and re-check them?

No, but I STRONGLY urge you to use a carry on bag rather than checked baggage. This way you can keep your stuff with you and there is no chance of lost luggage (unless you lose it). The more connections you make, the greater the chance of lost luggage.

You're allowed two carry ons, plus a purse or other small bag/laptop. One piece of carry on luggage will easily hold three or four days worth of clothes (or in my case eight days worth...don't fold your clothes, roll it up. You'll be amazed how much crap you can stuff in a small piece of luggage).

Oh ok, yeah, I can stuff all my crap in a small bag... I don't carry hardly anything as far as clothes go... I'll just have to find a small piece of luggage.

I have one of the LL Bean backpacks, maybe that would work...

i suppose at the end of august it could be warmer but let me tell you, it was freaking cold in berekley when we were there this past week. FREEZING. make sure you have long pants and a sweater!

PS for about 35$ you can get a nice rolling "cabin friendly" piece of luggage that will easily hold a week's worth of duds. We had to buy one to bring all our wine and olive oil and stuff from the allstar game home in. We went to ROSS, but any TJMAXX, Marshalls or off price store will do.

santa barbra is a great airport to fly from (small and no busy) but it tends to be pricy.

For the bay area check Oakland as well as SFO

LAX and Burbank are about 1.5 hours south of Santa Barbara

The drive from Bezerkely to SB is 5 hours. (no need to fly)

keep some of these in mind when looking for flights.

yahoo's fare chase is good site as the previously mentioned kayak.

If you land in the bay and leave from LA book two seperate one way tickets - this may be much cheaper than multi city.

IMHO $489 is very high, but then again I have not looked.

LAX to the mid west east coast can be as cheap as $200

-- edit --- I live in Santa Barbra so feel free to IM any ???'s

thanks for all the info.

i actually have a friend in CA, and we are going to be driving to Berkley and I don't exactly know how I am going to get to Santa Barbara yet...

so yeah, I am pretty much gonna fly to Burbank from either Chattanooga(which is the price mentioned above) or out of Atlanta which is a bit cheaper...
