wilcohead
I'm a recent convert, I had no idea the white stripes traveled into the future from the seventies to save rock n roll..... Honestly man, the bulk of their music does not sound like it was produced any time recently
Analogman
I don't hate them - I actually own White Blood Cells (is that the correct title?) - but I just don't see what all the fuss is about.
wilcohead
yeah its white blood cells.. Well have you heard de stjil? very zepplin-esque..... De Stjil is what completely won me over..... elephant and white blood cells are my least favorite Also is you haven't heard the raconteurs they are very much worth a listen
Analogman
Here's my trip - if I want to listen to LZ, I just put on a LZ disc.
oceanman
Since my level of street-cred is already less than zero I'll just be honest & say I don't get the White Stripes. Don't hate. I agree. While I like the inital sound and think Jack is a great player,I just don't get it.I guess they coined that sound but it gets old really quick.
wilcohead
well yeah if I want to listen to led zepplin I typically put in a led zepplin disc too............ But the white stripes are great. Its just roots rock man. Has a zep influence along with a massive influence from all the early delta blues artists....... I would feel bad for anyone that puts on the white stripes when they want to listen to zepplin because they aren't zepplin....
G_willy
I really like the white stripes and I think the new album is rockin... but I am going to have to agree I don't really get the new style. Its the really distorted midi sounding keyboard that just sounds sooo god awful that I almost want to fast forward through it. Good progressions, good jams...it just has one or two parts that make my teeth cringe.

Analogman
I see your point there.
wilcohead
The "new style" sounds more akin to the old style to me.......
oceanman
I see your point there.I've never heard you say that.Who are you?
G_willy
haha...I did feel a sense of joy knowing that I had analogman's approval
wilcohead
Honestly though if you dont like De Stjil I wouldn't really bother with the white stripes then........ De Stjil is a brilliant blues album.
Analogman
I've never heard you say that.Who are you? I try to not put others musical likes down - anymore. But - I can say if I don't dig something all that much. I mean - at least the dude plays guitar and it's not overproduced manufactured stuff.

MrRain422
I know that Icky Thump was their first album recorded in a "modern" studio. Not sure if that means they've abandoned analog, or if they're just using newer equipment.
WilcoFan
i love full metal jacket. Me too. I say this all of the time: Then how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and come on in for the big win? Also, I like the white stripes, they sound so 70's-ish. Meg is a good drummer, I don't care what people say. wilcohead
agreed they are right out of the seventies.... This is one of the things that attracts me to there music.
Sir Stewart
I like the White Stripes very much, particularly their latest two releases, but I don't see the seventies connection.
wilcohead
well the seventies connection is stemmed from the fact that their music has an older roots feel to it......its very pure.... I mean honestly you dont think they have an older sound? I'm extremely surprised if this is the case.... First thing I thought when I heard, Doorbell was "wow zepplinish".....
Sir Stewart
I don't hear an older sound, no. ohwellohwellohwell
wilcohead
not to be a dick.... But thats kinda funny to me... even Jack has constantly commented about how he should have been doing what he's doing in the 60's and 70's Check out the dvd blackpool lights..... "I'm in the right place at the wrong time"
stooka
For a fist-timer, I suggest starting with White Blood Cells (2001), since it captures the feel of what they are about. If, after 4 listens, you don't get it - you probably won't get it.If you really like it, proceed to Elephant (2003) which is their best record. IMO follow up with WS s/t (1999)De Stijl (2000)Get Behind Me Satan (2005)Icky Thump (2007) BTW, The White Stripes sound like Led Zeppelin about as much as Wilco sound like The Kinks.............just enough to reasonably recognize the influence. If you were to compare entire discographies, I don't find them that much alike.
