you ever seen a ghost?
it's probably the version that was recorded for and eventually used on the American Anthology of Folk Music tribute recently.-justin>Sure hope these fall dates will soon include some more southern dates you're fucking right about that!-justin
mountain bed
I love playing this song! One of my favorite non-JT lines: I bought her a gold ring, and I pay the rent. She tried to get me to wash her clothes but I got good common sense.
WaronWar
I love this song.
you ever seen a ghost?
for everyone who loves this song, you guys should definitely check out Richard "Rabbit" Brown's original. it's absolutely stunning. not that the Wilco version isn't good, because it's great, it's just...you know... do it. -justin
WaronWar
Yeah, the orginial version is on Harry Smith's folk anthology, right?
you ever seen a ghost?
yup. Brown only recorded 6 or 7 sides in all. the other famous one (and only other one i've heard) is "The Sinking of the Titanic." nothing really touches "James Alley Blues" though. holy shit, what a song. -justin
starlitewalker
unrelated yet related, i attended the Harry Smith Project event at St. Ann's in brooklyn in 1999. Wilco went on very late! they got there very early in the day. they were stuck/hanging out in the bus, parked directly in front of the chrurch, nearly the entire day and didn't go on 'til after midnight if i recall correctly, to play three songs!
