I'm Driving Across the Country

Recommended Posts

So I'm typing this from my hotel room in Oklahoma City, OK. I left Hilton Head, SC and am going to Santa Barbara, CA. It's been pretty fun so far. My car is packed up and I've had my iPod and XM radio to keep me company. I stayed with some friends in Clemson, SC for a couple of days then went to Memphis last night and was so tired, I didn't explore the city at all (unfortunately). I have a terrible headache right now, otherwise I would be out there checking out OKC, but I'm going to Albuquerque tomorrow and somewhere close to the California state line the next day then it's to my house in SB. This is my first time driving cross country and I've enjoyed it so far.

That's a shame, because the OKC bombing memorial is one of the most moving monuments/museum I have ever seen.

Goodluck on the road!!! I did the drive from Detroit to Southern California 2.5 years ago. Loved it. I stopped in St. Louis, OKC, Wichita Falls (parents), Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon. I don't know if you'll be by the northern rim of the Grand Canyon but I would strongly recommend stopping to soak in the beauty.

it should be mandatory to listen to CW McCalls' Convoy at least once a day during cross country road trips

Haha. Free lunch would be great! But I'm meeting up with friends I haven't seen in years along the rest of the way so I think I will have to pass. I think this summer I'm going to do it again but going back to Carolina and do it with a friend that time. Just go and explore.

See?? stuff like this makes the VC such a special place....... :yes

Amen.

Most definately!

Having arrived in Albequerque about an hour ago, I can easily say this is my favorite stop just for the sheer coolness of it. I'm gonna go exploring. 2 more days left!

If you see my sister, tell her I said hi!

If yer headin' through Grand Canyon way, go a little further north before you get there and go into SW Utah for Monument Valley2232266-The_Mittens_Monument_Valley-Monument_Valley_State_Park.jpgMonument%20Valley%20Sunset.jpg

Stunning. What's the best time of year to drive through this part of the country and what is the minimum amount of time required to see it?

I'm way into checking this out next year.

I assume you mean to see all the redrocks in southern utah (??) I am a resident of Salt Lake City and have been there many times -- and it stuns me everytime. I would advise going in the early fall. If you go in the summer, it is hotter than hell down there. You could take 2 or 3 days to see it, depending on what you want to do. There is Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park and Arches National Park. All are totally stunning. It's like another planet.

Should you want to do some epic mountain biking, visit Moab, Utah. It's a cool little town with some great hiking and biking areas. Note: for these activites, you really will want to not visit in the summer. It is VERY HOT. If heat doesn't bother you, the only time I can imagine not being able to take it all in is during the winter.

EDIT: You can get to these areas in about a 5-hour drive from SLC, should you fly in and rent a car.

Agreed. We were there over the weekend. Not the first time but it's always something special.

I was just there at the end of May. When you come in from SLC you drive thru a bunch of mountain areas and valleys....eventually you come around a turn on the highway and....BAM you're on Mars.

Totally. Have you been to Coyote Buttes? Talk about another planet. Amazing.

So?....... Where ya at now? Keep us informed. I'm living through you now since I'm not traveling any where. :cheers

Well here's an update....Just checked into my hotel in Needles, CA. My back is starting to get a little sore but other than that I'm all good. Only 6 more hours of driving left and I was so close to just pushing ahead and going the rest of the way, but it could have ended with me asleep at the wheel. Anyway...the best part of my drive today was going through Flagstaff, AZ. I didn't know that there was so much green in Arizona. Plus it was raining and there was crazy lightning off in the mountains. It was very cool.

Thanks for all the info. I think the ideal thing if it's not TOO ambitious would be to see Monument Valley, Grand Canyon & Zion. We defintiely would not go in the Summer. My wife has been to Arches & Moab, so I was thinking we'd probably wind up skipping that in favor of all the other sites.

Hope you didn't miss out on the Grand Canyon. It was only 45-60min north of Flagstaff.... but those storms probably wouldn't have made it so magnificent.

Wasn't snoopy's cousin spike from Needles?

Looks like you only have a little bit more to go!
