viadurham
I've been working on a novel for the past year and recently took a break to write a literate-fiction short story to try to get something published in an e-zine, magazine or literary journal in hopes of having something out there before I start sending out my manuscript. Does anyone have any suggested sites or titles I should check out? Thanks, MiKE

quarter23cd
Digging back in the memory banks here. After college, I was lucky enough to have a job where I got to sit around all day and read literary journals (oh, and I think I was supposed to be cataloging them for a database...or something). There are an awful lot of university publications you could look at. Here are a few of my old favorites that frequently publish original works: New Orleans Review The Ohio Review Ploughshares If I ever get around to (finally) writing anything worth publishing, I'd start there. As mentioned above, McSweeney's and The Believer are a lot of fun, too. I'd be insanely jealous if you were to get something published in there.
mpolak21
McSweeney's and The Believer are fantastic, you would be my hero if you ended with anything in those. If you are just looking for publication, I'd check out any area colleges to see if they do any literary type magazines, because they are always looking for submissions and even though it might be relatively small time, though some of their productions are as good if not better than anything, it's a great place to get your foot in the proverbial door. As a fellow Mike, who is also working on a novel, I wish you luck. --Mike
