Questions about Australia!

Recommended Posts

So I know a few of you on here are from or have been to Australia. I am looking into visiting some of the following cities and am open to suggestions:

Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Brisbane, Hobart, Ayers Rock, Perth, Auckland

I am only there for 14 nights so was thinking

4 Sydney

4 Melbourne

3 Cairns

3 Brisbane

Based on the other choices would you substitue any of these? Is Ayers Rock worth the trip? Should I save Auckland for another time? Is Hobart to far out of the way to visit? Is there anything to do in Perth? Any info would be great! :thumbup

3 nights in cairns might be a bit much, but i havent been there.

sydney & melbourne are the 2 most happening cities. sydney has the harbour area (circular quay) where there's lots to do and the harbour bridge and opera house. the CBD area is a bit of a maze so make sure you have a map!. melbourne has Southbank and Docklands where there's lots of restaurants/bars. the CBD in melbourne is much easier to navigate area since all streets are parallel to eachother.

hobart is quite nice. nothing much to do in adelaide really (heh, even wilco didnt stop over there in april but they went to perth). i've heard there's nothing much to do in alice springs apart from visit the rock. they've banned people from climbing it though recently

when do you plan to come down?.

I fell in love with Melbourne when my husband and I visited Australia in 2003, but the most memorable part of our trip was the Great Barrier Reef and camping at Jervis Bay in NSW. We were travelling with a couple who just happen to be a marine biologist and an ornthologist, so that was definitely a bonus. I regret that we didn't visit Tasmania, but I guess that gives us a reason to go back.

14 days? I would do:

4 days Sydney

2-3 days Cairns (for scuba)

6-7 days on the South Island of New Zealand

I havent been to Melbourne; so I cant comment. Sydney and Great Barrier Reef are no brainers. Be sure to see a show at the Sydney Opera House; I saw Romeo & Juliet there. We did a side-trip to NZ and that ended up being the highlight of the entire trip. We stayed in youth hostels and met lots of great people. Probably the best vacation of my life so far.

I will be there in June...its for the honeymoon. Yep I know it is almost winter but I understand it is very mild. I am avoiding New Zealand because it will add on a lot of cost to my Qantas Aussie Passes...I will have to save that for next time! So it sounds like Ayers Rock might not be worth the trip. It sounds like from a bunch of people that these 4 cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and Brisbane might do the trick. Do you know if it is feasible to do a day trip to Tasmania from Melbourne?

the trip from melbourne to hobart is just over an hour flight. if you like seeing green trees and stuff, tasmania might be worth it, although its the coldest state in the country. the winters here arent like american ones. the average june daily temp range for melbourne is 6'C to 13'C

you wont see any snow unless you go to the ski resorts which are in victoria and new south wales. they're about a 3 or 4 hour drive from melbourne, depending which one you go to
